BOOK REVIEW - The Million Dollar One Person Business by Elaine Pofeldt.

In exploring career opportunities, you might be looking for flexibility and self-determination but not to be bogged down by operational admin or managing people?

Entrepreneurship has many pluses and minuses. Opportunities abound challenged by the burden of executing upon them well—requiring money, people, time, energy, and risk...all for that elusive, desired reward, mission realization, AND lifestyle objective.

I read Elaine Pofeldt’s new book THE MILLION DOLLAR ONE PERSON BUSINESS and found that she captures well the search for success in this new landscape. So many of us want freedom, flexibility, and financial reward when pursuing our own vision, but want to maintain control of our time and not get burdened by the complexities and responsibilities of being an employer and having to manage people.

Elaine shows us this is possible and how to accomplish it. She gives comfort, direction and straightforward steps to create work, value, and wealth on our own terms. Her book is a strong catalyst, enabler, and supporter for everyone out there considering making an independent next move for their next career, or to give solopreneurs a boost to grow their businesses. Great for the new world of work.

This Week's Future of Work Muse

FAKING FLEXIBILITY? Whether you know it or not, your firm’s flexible working policy might be doing more harm than good.

What?! (Did a wave of relief wash over, for just a moment?!)

That’s not to say that workplace flexibility isn’t a critical component of any thriving and sustainable Future-of-Work environment. However, if the ‘flexibility’ is not genuine, if it is flexible on paper but not in implementation, it could cause serious frustration with your employees.

MINDSET FIRST, POLICY SECOND is the path to success with workplace flexibility. The policy is the operational recognition of workers’ being considered as unique individuals. Supervisors understand that any worker will perform best when able to adjust for their personal work style and preferences (depending on team needs and other business requirements).

This is why workplace flexibility sits at the core of a strong culture that is going to:

- Attract and retain today’s multigenerational workforce;

- Be the cohesive connection across an increasingly decentralized workforce;

- Be inclusive of the diversity of your employees;

- Enable your workers to optimize their productivity.

Have you checked in recently to see how authentic your workplace flexibility policy is: What percentage of your workers actually uses it? Do employees fear stigma or penalties if they work from home? Do you have good metrics and are results-oriented to help shift the burden from facetime to outcomes and employees can easily measure their productivity?

If your company would like a workplace flexibility policy that allows your employees to do their best work, email Sophie.Wade@FlexcelNetwork.com

This Week's State of Work Muse

WORK IS IN A STATE. The State of Work report from Workfront for 2018-2019 is out, revealing over 2000 workers’ struggling to perform in workplaces that lack adequate communication, process, and technology support. No wonder productivity is low!

CHAOS & CONFLICT are rife among the respondents:

  • 41% are unaware of one to five tasks assigned to them each month, 4% miss more;
  • 86% don’t have a clear idea about what their colleagues are working on;
  • 57% cite inconsistent priorities and 56% cite ineffective communication as causes of conflict between teams and departments;
  • 45% would actually rather sit at the DMV than suffer another pointless meeting!

PROJECTS UNPROCESSED. As project work increases, workers blame project delays on: insufficient understanding of scope (36%), incorrect prioritization (35%), lack of time in planning (28%). 34% feel hindered in their job by lack of ‘standard’ processes for workflow.

DATA DISARRAY compounds the situation with 55% feel bogged down by excessive emails. Only 27% feel on top of data gathering, analysis and use, with 13% overwhelmed, 40% not clear how to use the good data they collect, and 21% looking for more/better data.

This is clearly not the path to successful digital transformation or thriving in a more unpredictable and project-based world. However, there IS good news:

EFFECTIVE TOOLING. Employees are looking to improve their productivity and results. 33% of workers believe instituting better processes would help them be more effective. 51% would like to benefit from a work management platform. 54% believe their team would be more successful if all employees were given a dedicated four hours a week to focus on innovation.

NOT (YET) PRIMED FOR PROGRESS. While 44% are requesting more tools to manage their work (especially Millennials (51%)), executives at their companies are not yet on board.

If you are looking to improve the productivity at your company, consider what effective employee support looks like—including tools and training—so they can communicate, collaborate, advance tasks and manage projects effectively.

Labor Day's Future of Work Muse

LABOR IS LOVED OR LOST. We have a tight labor market and a talent-focused workplace that is fast evolving to accommodate technology’s advances. Paying close—and caring—attention to your workforce is a priority or you will lose productivity and people. Here are tips for starting fall strong:

L – LEADERSHIP – Be inclusive. Encourage all generations. Raise younger employees’ profiles, especially for guiding and implementing digital transformation projects.

A – ACCOUNTABILITY – Share responsibility. Empower decision-making down and across your organization, emphasizing expertise not tenure.

B – BENEFITS – Customize options. Survey what your employees really want and research choices - such as affordable, different wellness alternatives.

O – OPENMINDEDNESS – Highlight essential values. Promote cognitive diversity encouraging consideration of ideas and debate with all workers participating.

R – REVIEW – Iterate often. Progress, test, check, and confirm reasonably frequently to adjust for evolving conditions when necessary.

D – DECENTRALIZED WORKFORCE – Support them, individually. Understand what each person needs in terms of technology, training and oversight.

A – ASSESSMENTS – Check-in weekly. Coaching employees helps them navigate changing environments with forward-looking discussions.

Y – YES – Say yes (and then qualify or tweak). Use empathetic language and approaches to validate and motivate workers. Eliminate ‘but’!
