ENGAGING WITH EMPATHY. I believe, if there’s one element to emphasize—as the ‘secret sauce’ in the workplace recipe—it’s utilizing our capacity, depth, and range as sentient beings.

We can focus on—developing and nurturing—our abilities to understand ourselves, our colleagues and team members. When we do, we have the greatest chance of creating environments that support healthy combinations of well-being AND productivity. We enable long-term sustainability—for our talent and our businesses.

EMBRACING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. Why is empathy the solution—as the ability to put ourselves in other people’s shoes and feel what they are feeling? It focuses our efforts on understanding each other in the fullness of who we each are; the extent of the contributions that we are each capable of; and enabling these to be provided.

In a competitive marketplace, this gives us the means to:

- Deliver enhanced performance levels;

- Stimulate responses to the tech-accelerated pace of business;

- Identify how best to meet and match changing skills’ needs;

- Attract and retain talent (especially noting the tight labor market);

- Manage decentralized workers - employees AND contractors.

THE MISSING LINK. Our workplaces have historically avoided emotional dimensionality; dismissed soft skills in leadership; and undervalued our humanity that is the very essence of our unique talents and exceptional ability to communicate and collaborate.

Changing these entrenched habits will become ever critical as robots and machines become integrated into our work environment and workforce. We want to distinguish ourselves as human workers and compete effectively for the roles we want, and are best-positioned for. Empathy is key for achieving this transition successfully.

If your company is looking for help to elevate empathy in your leadership, managers, and teams, and to support your decentralized workers, please contact Sophie at sophie.wade@flexcelnetwork.com

This Month's Future of Work Muse

CHANGING CAREERS. It was stimulating to speak at my business school reunion at INSEAD at the end of June about the evolution of careers. A timely topic for the audience of peers, all of us considering where we are in our career arcs and trajectories, thinking about what’s next, why, and how to get there.

CATALYZED CONVERSATIONS sought to reframe and learn from past decisions and inform future choices. Discussions explored and identified passions, purpose, and strengths to help craft new possibilities. A few from the class shared their fascinating ongoing journeys.

NOTE: Last fall, the Financial Times recommended EVERY individual PLAN for FIVE careers over their lifetime. Apart from tenure positions in academia, ‘permanent’ or extended-term jobs have all but disappeared. What’s your pro rata projected career count now?

CONSEQUENCES AND SEQUENCES. Your own next career might be applying the same skills as now or developing new ones. It could be in the same or different industry—possibly changing employment arrangement going from employee to consultant or even becoming a new entrepreneur. Or perhaps you might make a major move out of corporate to politics or non profit.

CONFLUENCES AND CHALLENGES. Not for you? Or not yet? Or not relevant? REALLY? Whether it is digital disruption across industries changing roles and skill needs and or corporate pyramids reshaping into columns, careers are fluid, fragmenting, and morphing.

New career paradigms are impacting everyone. The repercussions are significant—for senior executives, the composition of your teams, and your own future—who stays or goes, what employment arrangement people have, and how available they are.

Explore, discover, plan, and transition. It's a good time to pay attention to career changes all around you. If you would like to understand more about new career paradigms and their impact on your workforce and company's future, please contact sophie.wade@flexcelnetwork.com

Barclays is the latest to question whether GDP is a useful measure of economic growth and progress — | The Work In Progress Report | Scoop.it
There is a growing chorus of economists who say it's time to stop using gross domestic product as the prevailing measure of growth and economic progress. Barclays, one of the world's largest banks, just joined in. Dissatisfaction with GDP is not new, with people from the former King of Bhutan to Amartya Sen embracing alternativ
Sophie Wade's insight:

About time! GDP is out of date. We have scarce resources. Producing more 'stuff' is NOT a good measure of success and growth. Plus human well-being has qualitative & quantitative importance and impact on the wealth and health of any nation.

This Week's Muse

THE ‘EMOTE’ IN REMOTE. Emotional Intelligence is an essential factor for success for the decentralized workforce. Whether you are managing or working with remote team members or you are the remote worker, emotional sensibility will help you understand both yourself and your coworkers better, and enable everyone to work more effectively.

ONE SIZE FITS NONE. Why? Of course, we are all different. Not just in terms of gender, race, background, and experience. We also each work best in slightly different ways, places, and at different times. When we were constrained, working side by side in the same office at identical workstations on the same schedules, these variations were masked, muted or perhaps we were just too busy and ignored them.

That said, you have probably observed certain habits, traits or strengths of particular colleagues: one who isn’t ever fully awake until 9:30am; another must have quiet to focus properly; another person is great at facilitating discussions. However, many managers have not explicitly noticed or utilized such insights to orient team members and adjusted their habits, focus or schedule to improve performance.

PAYING ATTENTION. Variations are likely highlighted or accentuated when people are working in dispersed and dissimilar environments. With new working options, we can each engage our emotional intelligence and actively take note of what conditions we ourselves work more—and less—effectively in.

Extrapolating from there, we can also be more sensitized to--and empathetic about--what the preferable settings and schedules for each of our colleagues might be. We all have much subconscious knowledge about ourselves and team members. We just have to surface, activate, and utilize it.

IF you are interested to understand how to improve the performance of your decentralized workforce, and remote workers, contact sophie.wade@flexcelnetwork.com
