Movement helps kids focus and behave better in class. Educators can help students focus more with not requiring students to sit all day. Research shows that just changing from traditional to standing desks for parts of the day helped students stay more focused and energized.

Six Alternative Seating Options in the Classroom for a Child with Special Needs - Friendship Circle - Special Needs Blog

Six Alternative Seating Options in the Classroom for a Child with Special Needs - Friendship Circle - Special Needs Blog | The Classroom Redesign: Flexible Seating | Scoop.it
When most of us think of a classroom, we envision children sitting at their desks and a teacher at the front of the room explaining a concept or teaching a lesson. If you’re my age, you may even have visions of that little schoolhouse from Little House on the Prairie. Although that vision still holds true in many classrooms (not so the schoolhouse, but the sitting part), teaching is evolving to meet differences in learning styles. The goal after all is the learning. It is not foreign anymore to see a teacher on the floor with her students or students up and about around the classroo

Stability balls let kids get rid of the wiggles

Stability balls let kids get rid of the wiggles | The Classroom Redesign: Flexible Seating | Scoop.it
Talk about a teacher's dream: no more slouching, no more wiggly little boys and no more snoozing at desks. A growing number are replacing them with exercise stability balls more associated with Pilates classes than schoolroom lectures as an innovative way to improve student posture and attention. [...] they've taken to their rubbery seats as naturally as older office workers who sit on stability balls to alleviate back pain. John Kilbourne, a professor in the Department of Movement Science at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich., switched to stability balls in his college courses last semester and surveyed 52 students on the change. Students mentioned improvement in their ability to pay attention, concentrate, take notes, engage in classroom discussions and take exams. [...] because they don't have backs, the balls don't allow sitters to lean back and take pressure off the tailbone, said Fabio Camana, an exercise physiologist at the American Council on Exercise.

Beyond the Seats in Flexible Seating

Beyond the Seats in Flexible Seating | The Classroom Redesign: Flexible Seating | Scoop.it
Without change, we exist in a stagnant environment.  Learning is about persistence, failure, and change. Each summer there are buzz words that emerge and ideas for teachers to think about.  However, not everything fits into a neat little package.  There is not one boxed program, method, or idea that will work in every classroom.  Teaching

I love everything that is said in this article. It really explains the importance of maximizing learning opportunities and creating meaningful experiences by rethinking the classroom. Research shows that "5 percent of the information delivered through lecture was retained. Compare that with retention rates at 50 percent for discussion group and 70 percent for practice by doing. Even higher, at 80 percent, was retention by students teaching others." Classroom design can help students develop skills beyond the classroom, and set them up with skills to be successful in life.

Flexible Seating more than seating!

Please, provide your students with options to move! They need it! Why Flexible Seating?

Why Flexible Seating? | The Classroom Redesign: Flexible Seating | Scoop.it
Today’s schools are no different than the ones in the 1800s! “Well, wait!” you might say, “A lot has changed since then, curriculum has changed, seating arrangement has changed, discipline has changed, books, technology, resources, many things have changed!” Unfortunately, one everything has not changed, and that is the sitting requirement that we impose on…

It’s been my dream to make my 2nd grade classroom look more like a “Starbucks for kids”, and less like, well, a classroom.
