How to Improve Mental Concentration For Fitness Right Now | FitnessTraining | Scoop.it
We need mental concentration especially for fitness: to keep our head in the game, to choose the next play, to know the next yoga asana, the next move in a kata, to be in sync with a teammate, a dance partner, or a sparring partner.
ShapeShifterFitness's insight:

The need for enhanced mental concentration is paramount. Here are some great ideas for improving your concentration during exercise.

Do you have a comment you can add? Any ideas you can share with me regarding concentration techniques?

Feel Good Look Good: Best and Worst DC, VA, and MD Health Clubs

Feel Good Look Good: Best and Worst DC, VA, and MD Health Clubs | FitnessTraining | Scoop.it
When women joined the gym scene in the early 1980s, working out was often half fitness, half flirtation.

"You'd see a cute girl in the corner, not even working out, with five guys around her," says Evelyn Holder, a 43-year-old lightweight bodybuilding champion who worked for Holiday Spa before joining Spartan and then Olympus Gym. "Some women wore tights with thong leotards on the outside."

Today, you'll see short-and-T-shirt-clad members pacing behind the cross-trainers to see if anyone is past the 30-minute limit. Some carry notebooks to keep track of sets and reps; others time it so they're doing cardio during the Nightly News.

"There's less interest in 'Who can I talk to?' or 'Maybe I'll meet a cute guy' and more of a focus on what they need to do in an hour," says personal trainer Yaz Boyum, who sees clients at Definitions, a gym in Georgetown, and works out at Gold's Gym.
ShapeShifterFitness's insight:

The author of this post on the Washingtonian has done a remarkable job writing in an informative yet highly entertaining manner. A definite good read.

Low Reps vs High Reps

Low Reps vs High Reps | FitnessTraining | Scoop.it
Should you be doing more reps with lighter weight or fewer reps with heavier weights?

Today I am going to settle this debate once and for all. I will stop you doing ineffective training and dig you out of "No-Gain's Land". Before we go ahead, let me clarify few popular myths.

MYTH-1
If you are doing high reps with lighter weight, you will get “toned”.

TRUTH
High reps (6-12) deliver big muscular gains. High reps (15+)increase endurance.

Some women will curl 5lb dumbbells for 25 reps in an effort to “tone” their arms, but it doesn’t work that way. The higher rep sets (15+) increase your endurance but it doesn’t focus primarily on building muscles. High reps develop Type 1 muscle fibers (“slow twitch”) that are endurance based and slow to fatigue. If you do 8-12 reps, you will increase time under tension, which is a necessary stimulus for hypertrophy (muscle building). The ideal rep ranges to elicit the greatest changes in body composition (muscle building) likely occur within the 6-12 rep range.
ShapeShifterFitness's insight:

An excellent article which really clarifies the explanation of weight and reps. It depends on what the fitness goals are, but this is on point.

6 Reasons Why Hiring a Personal Trainer Is Worth the Money

6 Reasons Why Hiring a Personal Trainer Is Worth the Money | FitnessTraining | Scoop.it
1. Trainers provide accountability and motivation

Do you want to face your trainer and tell her that you didn’t work out yesterday? Sure, you can get this accountability from a dedicated friend who works out with you, but this is the trainer’s job. He or she has a vested interest in seeing that you complete your workouts.
ShapeShifterFitness's insight:

As a personal trainer for over 15 years, I would have to say this is the biggest reason why people hire me.

Time for Tea - Touch of Wellness

Time for Tea - Touch of Wellness | FitnessTraining | Scoop.it
There are a surprising number of health benefits to be gained by switching out your java for some a cup of tea. However, not all teas are created equal. Sure those fruit-flavored teas may sound yummy, but be careful, they may not actually contain any tea. Want the real deal? Tea only comes from one plant—Camellia sinensis—and offers four varieties: black, green, oolong and white. So-called “herbal” teas are actually infusions of different plants and therefore not real tea.

Research has shown that tea’s health benefits come from the polyphenols (a type of antioxidant) and phytochemicals it contains. More studies have been done on black and green tea, but all four kinds offer health benefits.
ShapeShifterFitness's insight:

Do you prefer tea or coffee? An interesting article about the benefits of tea. Perhaps its tea time?
