How Biofeedback Can Train Your Brain to Think Smarter, Faster, Better

How Biofeedback Can Train Your Brain to Think Smarter, Faster, Better | Fitness & Heath | Scoop.it

Excerpts:

You exercise your body in the pursuit of optimal function, but what about your brain? Those looking to get an edge in—and out—of the gym are flexing their minds with neurofeedback. We're not talking Sudoku puzzles here (though they have their benefits), but neurofeedback—the process of hooking up to an electroencephalogram (EEG) in order to "train" your brain.

"Neurofeedback [also commonly called biofeedback] is somewhat like putting the brain on an elliptical machine or a stair stepper in order to exercise certain regulatory functions. For example, the brain can get stuck in an anxious state and neurofeedback training enables it to shift into a calmer state for optimal function. Essentially, you're aiding the brain's ability to self-regulate," says neurofeedback specialist Evelyn Shapero of the Brainfitness Centre in Los Angeles.

You Can Make All Kinds Of Muscle Gains With This Tried and True Meal Program.

You Can Make All Kinds Of Muscle Gains With This Tried and True Meal Program. | Fitness & Heath | Scoop.it

Excerpts:

The most serious of bodybuilders know that consuming six or more meals per day is essential to not only massive gain, but makes it easier for your body to efficiently digest the food, and keeps you topped off with nutrients.
The "six a day" rule also keeps your stomach smaller, promotes more water consumption, and allows you to intake more fiber, fruits and vegetables.
You've got to eat healthy to build mass, and you also must consider the other guidelines of bodybuilding nutrition.Eat at least a gram of protein per pound of bodyweight every day.Drink at least one ounce of water for every two pounds of bodyweight every day and strive to drink more.Have an appropriate postworkout drink or meal.Always eat breakfast.Leave behind all refined sugars or processed foodsUse supplements to boost your workout and nutrition efforts.
THE STANDARDS Of your six-pack of meals, let us suggest the optimum timing for three:
Breakfast: Make sure you have a meal in mind the night before so that when you wake up in the morning, you can eat as soon as possible.Postworkout: Prevent thrashed muscle fibers by including a protein and carb drink after every vigorous workout. This will keep cortisol in check and prevent muscle catabolism. Before bed: Although eating before bed has previously been thought of as a major no-no, it minimizes muscle breakdown. This is one example where choosing protein with a significant content of casein with its prolonged digestion and delivery of aminos to the muscles, could potentially be superior to rapidly digested and absorbed proteins, such as pure whey.
BUY IN BULK: The three time periods explained earlier are obviously crucial. But, to keep your body well-trained, it takes three more meals on top of that to ensure a massive body, and amino stores topped-off.

Why Women Should do Weight Training

Why Women Should do Weight Training | Fitness & Heath | Scoop.it

"Time and again, research has established that women who keep up a regular, average strength training program profit from a long list of health advantages. Some still fearful that weight training could bulk them up in unwomanly ways; nevertheless, as women of all ages recognise the benefits of resistance training, unsupportive attitudes about women in the weight training room are quickly passing, according to researchers."

I completely agree with this article from the Trainer's Edge.  Strong is very attractive and definitely does not mean masculine!

Check out just two of the benefits listed in the post:

3. Weight Training Will aid Your New Muscle battle Obesity.

As you add muscle from strength training, your resting metabolic process will increase, and so you’ll burn off more calories all day long. For each gram or kilogram of muscle you gain, you’ll burn 35 to 50 more calories daily. So, for example, if you gain 2 kg of muscle and burn 40 extra calories for each kg, you’ll burn 120 more calories per day, or roughly 3,600 more calories per month. That equates to a loss of 10 kg in a year!

4. Weight Training Will Fight Heart Disease.

Strength training will improve your cholesterol profile and blood pressure, according to recent research. Of course, your physical exercise program should also include cardiovascular exercise and flexibility training.

Catching up on Sleep May Not Work

Catching up on Sleep May Not Work | Fitness & Heath | Scoop.it

Excerpts:

In a new study by researchers at Penn State University, people forced to wake up two hours earlier for a week showed the usual signs of sleep deprivation—increased sleepiness during the day, worse performance, and signs of inflammation.

Fortunately, one weekend of extra sleep—10 hours a night—erased most of that damage. But even after all that extra shut-eye, volunteers still performed poorly on tests of alertness

The study, which was published in the American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism, also found that the level of the stress hormone cortisol didn’t change due to lack of sleep. However, sleeping extra on the weekend made it drop
