Eradicating the red imported fire ant with remote sensing

Eradicating the red imported fire ant with remote sensing | Fire ants Queensland eradiccation program and the use of remote sensing | Scoop.it
Recently we reported on the issue of red imported fire ants in Brisbane – a pernicious pest, first detected in Queensland in 2001, that affects agricultural crops, native species and human health. Although…
Barbara Bernal's insight:

With the use of remote sensing sensors in a helicopters, Biosecurity Queensland has been able to locate fire ant moulds due to their unique spectral signature, which in turns allows for the spraying and eradication of fire ants.

Destination Spatial
Barbara Bernal's insight:

Fire ants make a great application for spatial science, Biosecurity Queensland has developed a camera that captures, visible, near infrared and thermal imagery to target remaining fire ant nests in a large area scales where other options such as field survey where difficult.
