Tips on Applying for a Scholarship - 2013 2014 Scholarship Positions | Finding Scholarships | Scoop.it
Tips on Applying for a Scholarship In today?s world employers receive about 200-500 applications for each scholarship opening.
Jacob Pavek's insight:

My thoughts:

A lot of the tips in this article are obvious and no-brainers: "Apply only for those scholarships for which you are eligible". Many of the points made in the article are the same ones I have heard multiple times throughout the college process. The most unique claims it makes regard letters of recommendation and the written (essay) portions of scholarships. I have had a couple letters of recommendation completed, based solely on my academic performance. This article makes the point that the people who you ask to complete these letters should be familiar with more than just your academics. They should be able to talk about your personal interests and background in order to give a more unique and individualized recommendation.

College: 10 Step Guides - Where to Find Great Scholarships

College: 10 Step Guides - Where to Find Great Scholarships | Finding Scholarships | Scoop.it
10 Step Guide for helping students and parents get into and pay for college.
Jacob Pavek's insight:

My thoughts:

Many of the points made in this article regarding scholarship finding are obvious: I think everyone who has looked for a scholarship in recent years has utilized the internet. However, this article offers a few less-common methods in the process of finding scholarships that fit you. The suggestion to purchase a scholarship book is one I have personally never heard; I didn't know that a scholarship book could offer any realistic and practical scholarship opportunities. Also, it suggests that you talk to local businesses and community groups, both of which I haven't made any attempt to contact. All 10 ideas presented in this article offer practical methods for finding scholarships that fit your unique character and situation. I agree 100 percent with the final statements of this article. The best way to find scholarships is to not do it alone and get the help of professionals who know what they are doing. Although I have been fairly on top of things, I could have asked for help more along the way.

My thoughts:

This description of the scholarship-finding process offers many good tips to increase your potential for finding a scholarships that fit you. It mentions that seeking help from teachers and counselors is a great idea, because they help kids find scholarships for a living and can match you up with some that fit your unique characteristics. Also, it states that you should use online scholarship databases, which ask for a detailed student profile and then match you automatically with scholarships that seem to fit your profile. I have already taken advantage of a few of these types of scholarship databases, but now i can use the online Scholarship Experts database as an additional tool for searching. Both of these tips will help me search for more scholarship opportunities.

An easier way to apply for college scholarships

Jacob Pavek's insight:

My thoughts:

This scholarship-search database described in this CBS News article, ScholarPro, is one that I have never heard of before. According to this article, this specific scholarship database only provides scholarship matches that the user definetely is eligible for. All of the details provided about this website seem legitimate and beneficial. The database's specificity for scholarships would be a vast improvement from some of the databases I have personally used. Also, the annoying pop-ups and advertisements wouldn't be present because the website doesn't accept any ads. I got very excited to try out this website, until I heard the catch: the cost is $30 per year. Despite having been excited to find this database, paying the $30 in April wouldn't be as beneficial as it would 6 months earlier. I wish I would have learned of this website earlier in the college process, as I would have definetely utilized this tool.

The FBI might have been denied a brilliant forensic scientist if not for Washington's College Bound Scholarship program.
Jacob Pavek's insight:

My thoughts:

This scholarship program for students who excelled in school and exhibit significant financial need is a great program. For these high-achieving and well-deserving students, this program can offer a method to pay for college. Students such as the one described in this article very much deserve to go to a very prestigious college for their studies. Without a program like this, attending a university wouldnt be possible. This program helps out those who deserve it but cannot afford it.

60 Scholarships Get Funded

60 Scholarships Get Funded | Finding Scholarships | Scoop.it

Feelgood story of the week!  The BNE Charitable Trust has teamed up with Restore Belize, and provided $400,000 towards scholarships to high school.  Thanks!

"But there’s some good news; sixty students are getting a shot at a secondary education through a partnership of Restore Belize and the B.N.E. Charitable Trust.  The students will be a part of the 'I am Belize' Scholarship Program and by extension will get internship and mentorship opportunities.  Last week, B.N.E. Trust handed over a four hundred thousand dollar cheque for investment in the students’ education, beginning this academic year."

Jacob Pavek's insight:

My thoughts:

I think this is an excellent program for supporting high school students educationally and financially. The program requires that kids maintain certain educational progress, participate in their school's scholarship club, and set up a savings account to help start financial security for the future. This program gives kids money to help pay for the many expenses of schooling and helps them become financially secure for the future. More companies should sponser programs such as this one that encourages educational and financial success for kids in the future. The 60 kids who are selected are lucky to gain scholarship money, additional scholarship opportunities, and to jump-start their future financial security.
