Financial Markets and Content Curation
Over the past 10 years the dynamics of how news and financial information is exchanged has changed. Is it time to re-think how this is consumed by professional investors?

Fund management professionals are being overwhelmed by information

Fund management professionals are being overwhelmed by information | Financial Markets and Content Curation | Scoop.it

Over the past 10 years the enormous amount of research produced by banks and brokers has overwhelmed even the most highly resourced and tech savvy fund managers. It is simply not possible to consume the huge quantities of information available and increasingly difficult to even make sense of this vast pile.

But there's more

Seismic changes in the way information is disseminated in near real-time and in the way some market participants act on it by using high frequency trading and algorithmic techniques mean the role of the broker, information providers and others will change dramatically in the next five years.

The application of existing technologies in novel ways will have a large part to play in these changes.

LIBOR / SONIA debate – Could a solution be crowdsourced?

LIBOR / SONIA debate – Could a solution be crowdsourced? | Financial Markets and Content Curation | Scoop.it

This is slightly off topic but an interesting illustration of the scientific community embracing cross domain expertise to solve problems. Innocentive offers cash prizes for novel solutions to real problems presented by scientists, industry and others.

Everything from providing ways to manage rain water to Synthesis of YM Depsipeptide.

The finance industry as a whole suffers from “if it’s not made here it can’t be any good” syndrome and often overlooks what might be feasible solutions from other domains. With less resources, better technology and future needs to manage capital allocation very tightly, now might the time to look at new ways of doing things.

For cases such as LIBOR rates where there is a strong cases for open and transparent creation and understanding this seems like a no brainer. Perhaps a crowd sourced solution would be prove more novel than anything out there at the moment.

Interesting thoughts on curation, is it just regurgitation?

Interesting thoughts on curation, is it just regurgitation? | Financial Markets and Content Curation | Scoop.it

I don't think so.  We have reached the limit of what people can comprehend simply by going out to google and doing a search. Making sense of things is really difficult. Having some kind of curated content will make sense-making more efficient. It might be an algorithm, it might be a person.

"Wired NewsCuration: How the Global Brain EvolvesWired News"Those who can, do. Those who can't, review. Those who can't review, tweet. Those who can't tweet, retweet." The sentiment expressed in this buzzy quote is funny and makes a real point.

Curators need to apply their own quality filter. There is no substitute for a real world knowledge and a keen eye for promoted material, jokes and poorly attributed content.

Data Visualisation: [Tree] Map of the Market

Data Visualisation: [Tree] Map of the Market | Financial Markets and Content Curation | Scoop.it

Way back in 1999 before the last dotcom bubble burst, I was working for a major bank in New York.  The markets were booming and technology appeared to be changing everything.  Despite spending millions on systems the requirements of fund managers I spoke to remained pretty simple when it came to portfolio reporting and analytics.

Visualisation tools were not what they are today and news was completely sewn up by the big players of the day such as Reuters, Bloomberg, Thomson (now Reuters) and a small number of specialist suppliers many of whom have now been subsumed within the majors.

During the early 2000's new techniques and technologies emerged including the treemap illustrated here which was pioneered by Ben Shneiderman at the University of Maryland.  Some of his students and colleagues set up commercial ventures and I believe Spotfire (later acquired by TIBCO) was one of them.

Since then many new channels for news have come about and much easier ways of analysisng simple metrics such as price movement, portfolio weights v benchmark and standardised risk metrics against large datasets have emerged.

Interesting comment on the state of search algo's.  If we couldn't index 100k websites in 1996 how can we do 234m today?  Niche services selling curation as a primary feature may be the way foward (or is that back?)

How To Distinguish High Value Curation From Republishing

How To Distinguish High Value Curation From Republishing | Financial Markets and Content Curation | Scoop.it

There needs to be added value for really  effective curation.  If subject matter expertise and understanding of  readers viewpoint is not part of the equation then it becomes ANother space filler and not worthy of attention.

Detailed understanding of search techniques is required but the meaning and relevance of content requires deep understanding to make it valuable.
