$2750 for access? @nyftlab application process explains lack of innovation in #NYC #Fashiontech

$2750 for access? @nyftlab application process explains lack of innovation in #NYC #Fashiontech | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
The New York Fashion Tech Lab recruits women-led early and growth-stage companies where access to senior level executives at fashion retailers could have a meaningful impact on the company's growth prospects.
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

$2750 for access? @nyftlab application process explains lack of innovation in #Fashiontech  #diversitymatters #nyc -  For several reasons NYC's Approach to a strong foothold in the global  fashion sector has thus far missed the target as to who are the important players in fashion's future. Beyond the hype there are no breakout stars that  justify the investment and support.  Essential NYC's Fashion tech  has  a passionate affair brewing between retail and technology,  They have all but left out  NYC unique and broad scope of fashion participants. Forgetting that at the end of the day people buy  apparel.

As BOF cited Fashion is currently
"a $1.2 trillion market size, expected to grow to $2 trillion by 2018. To put that into perspective, the global SaaS market is around $20 billion. Cloud services is $131 billion. And enterprise software is $120 billion."

So there is  a lot at stake.
Ironically I shared this as part of our ongoing  effort to educate fashion professionals who understood the challenges of fashion, on the terminology used,   and was alerted to the requirements for application as a result. It was not just the application price ($250) of the application fee but the reason for it-  "review of readiness by partners",
BEFORE PARTICIPATION... isn't that what tech accelerators and incubators are about... reviewing prepping for readiness.

I checked for a program...
This is not a pitch
this is vying for an opportunity to "Demo Day, where fashion retail executives, investors, and press". So essentially you are paying for access

Fashion still misses some of the key reasoning behind the tech  culture.

Sorry but I''ll continue prepping  the fashion  core for application to Ycombinator and ERANYC

Why Isn't Anyone Talking About the Most Frightening Part of Amazon Handmade?

Why Isn't Anyone Talking About the Most Frightening Part of Amazon Handmade? | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
What's stopping Amazon from using this platform to track the newest trending products by emerging artisans and designers, as they've done to other sellers in the past?
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

Artisans do not understand the value in what they offer.  So let me ask this. What's stopping Etsy from selling that same info to large businesses.  Heck  many manufacturers already scrape Etsy  offering  the items for fraction of the price, many times using the  images from the artist themselves. YET  Amazon added handmade by  watching trends. Sure that deep data is invaluable  and i suspect that the truth is, that the data is some how  already  being made available.

What has bothered me and  continues to bother me is the stipulation that the  items must be "made by hand", is NOT reflected in the prices.  Another is that  "Made by hand" cannot be "factory" done...  the only way  handmade can become possible at these prices  is through the development of production procedures!

All in all artisan should test  Amazon handmade and adjust to suit their needs... but as the article says... please set up your own website first!

I recommend a self hosted Wordpress.  and I am please with my host www.Dreamhost.com (use "NYukCO") for a discount

#Goodfit is not an algorithm, at it's best its is a correlation  between a fluid form and a 3D object.
"But in this data-driven age, isn’t there a way to developA fit-systems that take different body proportions into consideration?"

#Goodfit is not an algorithm... the challenge is most developing fit systems have never actually "FIT"someone...

Each variation requires a shift in the Pattern that creates the items, oftentimes it also requires differing design approaches...
so there is sizing which is about measurements and body mapping which deals with your shape...
note images and illustrations are 2D- so even then how that garment sits on you body and moves with you differs even with seemingly similar bodies. What few will admit is that even those below size 12 have their items custom fitted... here is a simulation of how one style can be adapted for various body shapes and sizes.
We also have regional issues... with body proportions
mass market works with the most "common" numbers and few actually use the most common recent measurement "data", fewer actually are aware of true Body form"

Not everyone who sews or makes patterns can fit... thus the challenge in production...
