GM Apathy

On Friday October 28th I had the opportunity to talk at the Savour Kilkenny Fodcamp about Free range and Gmo free food. 9 turned up to hear this, which was fine.  My ego does not need stroking regarding audiences.

I treat food and its source as a serious matter, and really personally [I always thought others did as well].  So the quality of what I eat is pretty important to me, I would even go further and say its of critical importance to my survival.  That is why I do what I do, by growing and rearing as much as possible and knowing the provenance of what I don't produce, in other words whats in it other than “food”.

Life on this planet has evolved over millions of years and we're here very simply because we are compatible with the food we produce.  If we start to eat “food” that has been modified by man at a genetic level, only in the last 30 years or so, we better be really sure that its safe.  If it is not we will eat ourselves into extinction in about100/120years [4 to 5 generations - your great-grand children] not because of lack of food but because of untested Genetic manipulation and transgenetic mutation of our reproduction systems due to unknown proteins.

Food was, is and always will be, of political and strategic importance.  It is an “Issue” and always [rightly so] will be.  So when I sat in on the “food bloggers” slot last Friday at Savour Kilkenny and listened to some of the comments uttered by some food bloggers regarding the GM issue I was surprised and dismayed.  These people consider themselves foodies yet they don't inform themselves or consider writing about such a critical issue.  Why not?  By putting yourself out there as a food blogger and writing about food you are obliged to discuss issues regarding all aspects of food safety.  If you don't you are doing yourselves, your families and your readers a disservice and I suggest you stop writing about food.

What I heard at the foodbloggers session was that some food bloggers only "feel obliged to write about what interests them” [like making cakes].  Ok the eggs you use are probably GM contimnated unless organic.  [If you buy bread with soy in it that's GM] So untested genetic modification of food is not of interest, bit retarded that type of thinking would you not think.  The more removed we are from the sources of our food, the more abstract we will view our existence.

No Gm food has ever been properly evulated [unlike new medicines which by law have to be, including field tests and independent assessment over time to check for damaging side effects].  Basically we are an ongoing uncontrolled field science experiment for the companies manufacturing Genetically Modified substances.

At this moment in time there are proven links to - infertility, cancers, renal failure, ADHD, but because of the power wielded by these companies nothing has been done to highlight these real concerns and halt, until proven otherwise, the use of GM.

To all who eat food, the issue of Gm is the most serious treat yet to face man kind because of its real ability to modify and combine with proteins in an unknown way inside our bodies.  These changes can then be passed onto our yet unborn children at a DNA level, with results unknown, this is a terrifying thing to contemplate.

Based on controlled experiments with hamsters and rats in Russia, infertility was the proven outcome in both genders after 3 years.  Are we going to eat ourselves into extinction??

It is long past the time for being PC.  It is time to stand up and say it is crap. We don't want to be part of a science experiment where no one has the remotest idea or even control over what sort of outcome will evolve. Put GM high on your list of priorities, demand independent testing, demand labeling that states what exactly is in your food, have a zero tolerance for GM.  Get more people talking about this.

This is an ISSUE probably the most important one that you will ever have to address. I believe that we are at the eve of a new age, for which there maybe no dawn.

I will not point you to any particular sites - simply Google - GM - and start finding out the truth for yourselves . Because if you don't.........................................

I started at long last

Some months ago, I decided to write a blog on the  concept of "Farm to Fork" covering any and all related topics, associated with and effecting food and of course rants[which Ive been told that Im good at].

As you can see from the number of blogs im an avid writer[not] ,its much more difficult than I thought to construct a meaningful piece of prose with sufficient content and depth to engage an other's interest..       so Im not;       what youwill read on here will be just me.a free range  gmo free Pig farmer located in north Tipperary Ireland, commenting on what concerns me and our future, regarding food, chemical additives, big big companies ,politicala apthy ..you know the good things in life.and wondering why we all seem to running downhill and cant seem to stop.

My deep concern is the ongoing Political cutehoorism that still prevades our government. There ongoing failure to address critical issues ,and Im not on about the state of our economy. Im on about failure to adress the GMO issue, while some govt depts are pushing food tourism and a clean green land. other depts are still allowing GMO's to be fed to our aninmals. Our dept of Ag is still not issuing facts on GMO's to farmers. Our Feed Mills are still maintaining that they canot source gm free Soya/Maize.

So I will have have plenty of grist for this particular mill for the foreseable future..
