Smith: "I've got to play better"
Sports Mole
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith has admitted that he needs to "play better" despite closing in on the club's record for receiving yards.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

Smith's 54 receptions for 940 yards leads the team, but its not been enough. Smith has only recorded four touchdowns this year. Smith's/ Flacco's struggles in the redzone are compounded by the absence of TE Dennis PItta, who is still recovering from an offseason surgery.

The Ravens still have a chance to make the playoffs, but year one of the New Flacco Era proved to be much like the pre-Superbowl winning Flacco teams.

Josh Gordon: Week 14 Fantasy Outlook
Bleacher Report
Gordon's challenge will also include working against Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib, who usually draws the assignment of covering the opposing team's best receiver.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

All-Stars WR Josh Gordon is facing one of his toughest match-ups of the year this weekend against Patriots CB Aqib Talib.

The match-up is the second leg of the first-round consolation playoff matches.

Talib and Gordon are simiarly sized and speedy. Talib stands at 6"2",  and runs a sub-4.5 second 40-yard dash. Gordon is 6'3" and ran a 4.52 40 at his 2011 rookie Combine.

Browns expect to start QB Jason Campbell.Gordon recorded three games of at least 100-yards receiving, including a  237-yard game, in three of four weeks Campbell started this season.

Gordon's production is crucial this week for the All-Stars, who ended the season 6-6 after a 5-0 start and missing the championship playoffs bracket.

Pigskin in a PETA: Animal rights group names top five vegetarian-friendly NFL stadiums | fantasy football | Scoop.it
In a league where big and burly rules the day, you wouldn't expect NFL stadiums to cater to the eating habits of vegans. Think again. (Yes, there are NFL stadiums that are vegetarian friendly. We have a list of the top five.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

Chiefs were named the 2nd most vegetarian-friendly NFL stadium by PETA. I guess PETA hasn't smelled the miles-long stretch of BBQ aroma eminating from the Truman Sports Complex every Sunday.

Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles--the city known for its Cheesesteaks--came in first.

Cheers!

Retired from the NFL, Tom Zbikowski to become a firefighter
NBCSports.com
After five seasons in the NFL with the Ravens and Colts, safety Tom Zbikowski decided to call it a career when the Bears cut him in training camp this season.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

Passing along this article. Its interesting to think that the vaunted 2005-2006 Charlie Weiss Notre Dame teams with Brady Quinn throwing to WR Jeff Samardzija and Golden Tate with its defense led by standout safety Tom Zbikowski registered zero impact in the NFL.

Weiss returned to the NFL for one season as the Chiefs OC, and is now coaching KU. Quinn has never proven himself as anything more than a back-up despite being a first-round choice. Samardzija is a stand-out pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. Now Zbikowski is a firefighter after five mediocre seasons in the NFL, mostly as a back-up.

College football fans will always remember this core of a once-great Notre Dame team. The magic of college football is that no matter what happens in the NFL, its players are immortalized as heros to fans of the sports.

Bleacher Report Arian Foster needs surgery, to miss season for Texans NFL.com The Houston Texans running back will undergo surgery either Wednesday or Thursday, and he'll miss the rest of the 2013 season with a back injury, NFL Media Insider Ian...
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

Pop a fork in him--he's done (for the year). Arian was injured early in last week's matchup against the Colts. He will have surgery on his back.

His 2013 season was disappointing by his standards. He topped the century mark only twice in 8 games.  RB Ben Tate will start in place of Foster. He rushed for 81 yards on 22 carries in place of Arian last week.

The good news is that Foster's IPO listing looks genius. Foster negotiated an up-front payment of $10 million in exchange for 20 percent of all future earnings with Fantex Holdings.

Andrew Hawkins activated by Cincinnati Bengals off IR

Andrew Hawkins activated by Cincinnati Bengals off IR | fantasy football | Scoop.it
Shifty wide receiver Andrew Hawkins was activated off the Cincinnati Bengals' short-term injured reserve list. The move adds another playmaker to an already potent Bengals offense.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

AJ Green might be seeing less targets with Hawkins now active.

The takeaways shouldn't be significant, but they will reduce Green's value from a fantasy perspective. Andy Dalton seems locked in on Green, even if he's covered, evidenced by Green's 85 targets, third in the NFL. Throwing into coverage at the 6'4" 21-lbs+ Green is a better choice than dumping the ball away. Hawkins is likely to get looks in these scenarios.

This will help the Bengals from a real-life perspective, but this move is a bit of a damper for the All-Stars. At best, Cinci utilizes the passing attack more and Hawkins takes coverage off Green. This scenario seems unlikely, however.

How can Antonio Cromartie stop AJ Green? 'Pray'
New York Post
Jets defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman devised a simple plan when asked Thursday what cornerback Antonio Cromartie needs to do to contain Bengals wide receiver A.J.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

The match-up should actually be very good. Cromartie has always excelled against physical receivers. He is one of the few CBs that can match up with Green (Cro is 6'2", 210 lbs; Green is 6'4", 207 lbs).

AJ Green has excelled for the Auto-Pick All-Stars this year, with 43 receptions for 619 yards and 5 TD. Those are all top 10 in the NFL.

Cromartie has struggled in replacing Darrelle Revis as the Jets #1 QB. Pro Football Focus ranks him 106 of 107 CBs this year. He did well last week covering the Patriots' rookie recievers, but has not faired well against veterans.

--RB Jordan Todman was limited in practice Wednesday with a thigh injury but is expected to play Sunday.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

My back-up running back may soon be pressed into starting action.

A slew of injuries to my running back position means I've been digging. Todman has been banged up all year but appears to be turning the right direction. We're about to see if his limited reps are because of his questionable talent ( 2011 6th round draft pick, no TDs rookie season) or because of the injuries.

Todman has 14 carries for 34 yards. Two weeks ago against the Rams he had 3 attempts for 16 yards. Last week he had one carry.

He should be good so long as he avoids this:

Vikings Name Freeman Starting QB - Bleacher Report

Vikings Name Freeman Starting QB - Bleacher Report | fantasy football | Scoop.it
Bleacher Report Vikings Name Freeman Starting QB Bleacher Report Having essentially exhausted all other options at the quarterback position, the Minnesota Vikings decided to make a change today by announcing that Josh Freeman will start Week 7's...
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

Auto-pick All-stars never got around to dropping QB Josh Freeman, and it looks like it may pay off.

Freeman signed a 1-year, $3 million deal with the Vikings and is starting this week. The Vikings have essentially given up on 2010 first-round pick QB Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel hasn't been cutting it.  Freeman was released from Tampa two weeks ago after a falling out with coach Greg Schiano and poor play.

The one-year contract could turn into a decent payday for Freeman at the end of the year. The Vikings may try Ponder one last time, but it appears as if they'll be heading in a new direction soon. Coach Leslie Frazier is 17-26 since 2010, his first head coaching job. After going 3-3 and 3-13, the Vikings posted a 10-6 record last season and made the playoffs. They're back to their old ways this season at 1-4.

The Vikings have flaws across the board, their defense isn't what it used to be and they have no weapons outside of AP. Maybe a fresh start isn't a bad idea. For Freeman, his best shot is earning a bridge contract while the Vikings prepare another QB selection. They are in position to draft top 5 in the coming draft.

Browns not shopping Josh Gordon
ESPN
Chudzinski addressed a report from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the Browns had talked with the San Francisco 49ers about acquiring Gordon.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

Mixed news for the All-Stars, but possibly great news for the Browns. Gordon was a second-round pick in the 2012 supplemental draft.

Gordon's talent has been overshadowed by off-the-field issues. Gordon was suspended 2 games this off-season for violating the susbstance abuse policy. It was his second-strike in the NFL. He faces a full year suspension if he fails another drug test..

Gordon is the only sign of life in the tepid Browns offense. Hes averaging 101 yards per game in his 3 appearences. He caught 50 balls for 805 yards in his rookie season.

SB Nation
A.J. Green's yardage disappoints fantasy players for fourth straight week
SB Nation
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green was held to 61 yards on five receptions Sunday.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

My main WR AJ Green has been having a rough year. He started strong in week one at Chicago with 9 rec for 162 yards and 2 TD. Since then, he has been held for 22 catches and 199 yards. In the stretch, he has yet to face a secondary stronger than Chicago's.

Its not all Green's fault. Andy Dalton is struggling this year with 5TD and 5 INT through his first five games. He has yet to throw a touchdown in two games and barely broke 200 passing yards per game in those games.

The Bengals have no support cast for AJ Green, allowing defenses to double or triple team him without worry. Tight ends Tyler Eifert and Jermaine Gresham are second and third on the team in recieving yardage, each with a shade above 200. It seems like defenses have figured out the Bengals passing game. Green is Dalton's only downfield target and if he's covered, the pass will likely be a dump off to one of the tight ends.

Raiders | Rashad Jennings gets praise - KFFL

Raiders | Rashad Jennings gets praise
KFFL
Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen praised RB Rashad Jennings for running hard when he was inserted into the lineup for RB Darren McFadden (hamstring).
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

I picked up Jennings this week to replace the injured Ahmad Bradshaw of the Colts. Along with Bradshaw's injury, he also is now directly competing for carries with Trent Richardson, whom the Colts invested a first-round pick into.

Jennings had a decent day last week, 15 carries for 45 yards but the Raiders will likely be without RBs Darren McFadden and Marcel Reece. McFadden didn't practice while Reece was limited.

For the Auto-Pick All-Stars, this move is this weeks low-risk, low-reward safe bet. Jennings should be worth a few points this week with a start looking likely.

He took the starting job in Jacksonville last year in the middle of the season with 61 carries for 175 yards--never breaking 60 yards in one game. He lost his starting job shortly after. Jacksonville was 24th in the league in 2012 with 3.8 yards/carry for its runners, so I'm hesitant to blame Jennings for last year's struggles.

Cincy Jungle
The accolades just keep pouring in for Bengals wide receiver, A.J. Green.

The latest tally shows Green receiving 368,708 votes. Johnson holds first in the wide receiver position with 449,346 votes. Johnson leads all wide receievers with 11 touchdown catches this season.

NFL head of officiating on Patriots-Panthers call: ‘I wouldn’t say they got it wrong’ | SI Wire | fantasy football | Scoop.it
When asked about the controversial pass interference no-call that ended Monday night's Patriots-Panthers game, Dean Blandino, the NFL's head of officiating, said he wouldn't downgrade the officials over the situation.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

NFL head of officiating backing the refs after last night's controversial end to the Patriots-Panthers game. The no-call at the end led to Carolina's victory after Luke Kuechly bear-hugged Rob Gronkowski in the end-zone on a Tom Brady pass to his tight end.

It didn't look like Gronk was going to make the catch-- he was falling backwards and the defender was clear in front of him, but rules are rules. Gronk was clearly interferred with and questioning whether or not he would've caught the ball is guess-work. Nobody knows for sure what would've happened but when there's a penalty, refs are obligated to call it.

The no-call was the Patriots' second game this season where a loss ended on a controversial note. The Patriots lost to the Jets in OT on Oct. 20 after a missed field goal by Jets K Nick Folks was called back on DE Chris Jones of the Patriots was flagged for a penalty that had never been called befored.

Torrey Smith struggling to find end zone - Baltimore Sun

Torrey Smith struggling to find end zone - Baltimore Sun | fantasy football | Scoop.it
Torrey Smith struggling to find end zone
Baltimore Sun
When Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith caught three touchdown passses as a rookie against the St.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

Torrey Smith only has two touchdowns despite being on track for 72 receptions and over 1,300 yards. Smith has recorded seven and eight touchdowns in the last two years respectivly.

There are four reasons for this (and possibly more)

1)Joe Flacco is underperforming this year. He has 11 interceptions in nine games after throwing 10 in all of last year.

2) 2012 breakout TE Dennis Pitta is still recovering from off season hip surgery. Smith's blazing speed can't be fully utilized without a check-down threat to keep the defense honest. Baltimore has no true recieving threat outside of Smith.

3)Rookie WR Marlon Brown is a better endzone threat. His 6'4" frame allows the 6'8" Joe Flacco to take advantage of shorter defenders. Brown is responsible for five of Flacco's 12 touchdown passes.

4) RB Ray Rice is in the midst of a terrible season. He's rushed for 289 yards in eight games, averaging 2.5 yards per carry. His career average is 4.4 yards per carry. Rice's ineffectiveness allows defenses to substitute some of its front seven for extra secondary help. This allows opposing defenses to focus on the Ravens' only offensive threat, Smith.

Fantasy football start/sit advice, Week 10: Rashad Jennings
SB Nation
Oakland Raiders running back Rashad Jennings had a huge game a week ago against the Philadelphia Eagles, gaining 176 yards from scrimmage and scoring a touchdown.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

New All-Stars RB Rashad Jennings tore up a weak Philly D last week is being advised to start against the Giants D today. The Giants are woeful offensively but still a top-10 defense. This year they allow an average of 102 rushing yards per game, 9th in the NFL.

Jennings is a mysterious talent who has been the back up for two elite running backs, MJD and Darren McFadden. The All-Stars picked up Jennings three weeks ago after having its RB position hemorraged by injuries. Jennings finally returned the favor last week, gaining 176 all-purpose yards and a TD.

Edit: Jennings put up 88 yards on 20 carries with 20 yards receiving. Jacksonville lost 24-20.

Talk about a man seizing an opportunity. Cruz was undrafted out of U. Mass. and put up no numbers his rookie year. Going into his second year, injuries propelled him from the #4 to the #2 WR, and he's never looked back.

Making NFL minimum his first two seasons, he racked up 2,500+ yards. This off-season, he signed a one-year, $2.8 million contract, which was extended a month later with a five-year, $45.8 million contract. This year, he has 47 receptions for 677 yards.

Miami's Mike Pouncey served grand jury subpoena in Massachusetts | SI.com | fantasy football | Scoop.it
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Massachusetts State Police served Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey with a grand jury subpoena less than an hour after the Patriots defeated the Dolphins 27-17 at Gillette Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

Pouncey was a teammate of Hernandez at Florida. He was also spotted hearing a "Free Hernandez" hat with his brother, Steelers OL Maurkice Pouncey, in the off-season.

This could serve to be another chapter in the AH83 saga. Prosecution evidence for the Odin Lloyd murder case is deteriorating as one of the co-operating witnesses has changed his story and the evidence is circumstancial. His other double homicide case is building and could be formally charged.

Police will likely get him on weapons charges, either way.  Serving Pouncey with a summons could unmask an interstate gun-ring if the police are right.

The Steelers come to New England next weekend. No connections have been alleged between Maurkice and the gun-ring, but there weren't any to Mike Pouncey prior to today.

If the Massachusetts police plan to serve Maurkice as they did Mike, they'll be unlikely to find him-- he's on the injured resvered and doesn't travel with the team.

Josh Gordon trade rumors: High pick and a player is the price, per Schefter
Niners Nation
The Josh Gordon rumor mill continues to percolate, with the trade deadline a week away. We take a look at the latest reports from Adam Schefter.
Nick Chadbourne's insight:

Gordon rumores are still swirling. Its a lot to risk for a guy that was suspended early this season for drugs, but the talent is immense.

Through five games, he has 450 yards on 27 catches. Last season he posted 805 yards on 50 catches, but on a mind-boggling 98 targets.

A lot of this has to do with the poor QB play in Cleveland, but drops are an issue this year. He's 20th in the league with four drops  despite playing two less games than most of his competitors. Last year, he had five drops in 16 games. If he can return to his rookie season form, he could be the WR weapon the Browns haven't had in years.
