Confessions of a Semi-Happy Wife

Confessions of a Semi-Happy Wife | Divorce Law for Women by Paul H. Nathan Law Offices | Scoop.it

I contemplate divorce everyday. It tugs on my sleeve each morning when my husband, Will, greets me in his chipper, smug morning-person voice, because after 16 years of waking up together, he still hasn't quite pieced out that I'm not viable before 10 A.M.

It puts two hands on my forehead and mercilessly presses when he blurts out the exact wrong thing ("Are you excited for your surprise party next Tuesday?"); when he lies to avoid the fight ("What do you mean I left our apartment door open? I never even knew our apartment had a door!"); when he buttons his shirt and jacket into the wrong buttonholes, collars and seams unaligned like a vertical game of dominoes, with possibly a scrap of shirttail zippered into his fly. It flicks me, hard, just under the eye when, during a parent-teacher conference, he raises his arm high in the air, scratches his armpit, and then—then!—absently smells his fingers.

9 Bedroom Habits That Could Save Your Marriage

9 Bedroom Habits That Could Save Your Marriage | Divorce Law for Women by Paul H. Nathan Law Offices | Scoop.it

For better or worse, the pre-bedtime habits you’ve formed over time have a huge impact on the wellbeing of your relationship. (For better = going to bed at the same time. For worse = self-grooming in bed. Just no.) Below, relationship experts share nine bedtime rituals that could change your marriage for the better.

1. Escort your smartphone out of the bedroom.

A recent study out of Baylor University found that nearly half of us feel “phone snubbed” by our partners. Give your S.O. more respect than that: When it’s time to go to bed, turn off all devices and tuck your smartphone in for the night as well, said Aaron Anderson, a Denver, Colorado-based marriage and family therapist. (Use your phone as an alarm? Consider this your chance to buy a snazzy new alarm clark.)

“Smartphones distract you from each other and keep you from communicating when you go to sleep and when you wake up,” he said. “You can have distractions everywhere else in the house but not in the bedroom. When you’re in your bedroom together, be together.”

Don't let smartphones come between you and your spouse.

To Commit or To Quit - Our Commitments

To Commit or To Quit - Our Commitments | Divorce Law for Women by Paul H. Nathan Law Offices | Scoop.it
Tyrese and Rev Run take on an issue at the heart of many people's romantic struggles: commitment.

Relationship expert and Tyrese's personal life coach, Iyanla Vanzant, joins the conversation to provide her unique, no-nonsense insight to women. In the process, Iyanla isn't afraid to get personal. She opens up about what led her to commit in her past marriages and why she'll never get married again. Joining Iyanla, Tyrese and Rev is author and relationship expert Emily Wilcox, who says women should create a list of at least ninety things they need from a man in order to commit to them. Wilcox also clearly lays out what a "commitment phobe" is and how to spot one.

Rounding out the show is a raucous comedian panel with headliner Greg Fitzsimmons, rising star Amberia Allen and stand-up stalwart, Dwayne Perkins as the trio weighs in on commitment issues and potential deal-breakers in their relationships.

How To Supercharge Your Performance In Stressful Situations

How To Supercharge Your Performance In Stressful Situations | Divorce Law for Women by Paul H. Nathan Law Offices | Scoop.it

Emily Fletcher founded and created the world’s first online meditation training—Ziva Meditation and zivaMIND. Since then, forward-thinking companies like Google, Barclays Bank, and sweetgreen have been inviting Emily to help optimize employee performance through meditation. We’re convinced her unique approach and skill set prime her to give even the busiest of  office drones the tools they need to get more efficient without losing their cool.

Now, we’ve put her special blend of wisdom right at your fingertips with this course on Guided Visualizations: How to Overcome Your Fears, Excel at Work & Have Mind-Blowing Sex.  So, check out Emily’s techniques for supercharging even the most stressful of moments, and then explore her course for even more insight on upping your game at work and in life.

When studying the brain and neurogenesis, scientists are discovering that there is no one magic bullet for improving your mental performance and physical health. Changing your diet is not going to have the same impact if you aren’t meditating and exercising. Meditation alone is not as effective if you aren’t eating enough good fat. Point of the story: Brain health is best attained by approaching it from all angles.

Paul H. Nathan Law Offices's insight:

"When you need an extra boost in a high-stakes situation, the strongest strategy is what I call the "Power Trio": breath work, power poses, and visualization."

The Real Reason You Can't Communicate With Your Partner

The Real Reason You Can't Communicate With Your Partner | Divorce Law for Women by Paul H. Nathan Law Offices | Scoop.it

Secretly, silently, maybe even unconsciously, we think other people are just like us. We fall in love and assume the two of us see the world through the same lens, even if we get lots of clues that, actually, no, we don’t. So then we spend the next 45 years trying to convince our significant other to see everything our way.

When clients first come to see me, often they say they’re in search of communication skills. What it turns out most are really looking for is a surefire way to get their partner to agree with them. But who has ever succeeded in changing another person? No one I know.

To expect you to see the world the same way I do is a huge challenge. We get exasperated because underneath our point of view lies the question “Why aren’t you me?” Fortunately, the question itself can wake us up to just how absurd our expectations are. To tolerate the otherness in our partner requires generosity (recently found to be the most important quality in a long-term relationship), collaboration skills, and enough faith and trust in each other and what we’ve built together to feel at ease, unthreatened by our differences.

Paul H. Nathan Law Offices's insight:

As we all know communication is key... here are some reasons that could be blocked in your relationship. If you are considering divorce, let us assist you. (866) 414-4091

What Are Your Dealbreakers?

What Are Your Dealbreakers? | Divorce Law for Women by Paul H. Nathan Law Offices | Scoop.it
Nobody gets 100% of what they want in a partner; you get anywhere from 60% – 90% and round up because they’re just that worth it. But while some things on our dating wish-list are “It would be nice if,” others are “must haves” and still more are “absolutely must not”. But handling dealbreakers often isn’t as black or white as we might like… especially when someone we are interested in has dealbreakers that exclude us.

When it comes to dating dealbreakers, it can be hard to know how to handle them. Are yourdealbreakers too finicky? When is another person’s dealbreaker unreasonable? Let’s talk a little about which dating hurdles can be overcome (and how) and which are completely insurmountable.

Paul H. Nathan Law Offices's insight:

Remember that every relationship is a matter of compromise.

A Culture Moving Beyond Marriage - Iceland

A Culture Moving Beyond Marriage - Iceland | Divorce Law for Women by Paul H. Nathan Law Offices | Scoop.it

What would a society look like without marriage? The question popped into my brain after I stumbled across a list of countries with the most unwed mothers.

With 40% of its babies born out of wedlock, America sits near the middle of the global pack in this category. Conservative Turkey brings up the rear with a scant 3%.
And the nation at the top of the list? The world leader in single moms?
Iceland.
More than two-thirds of Icelandic babies -- 67% -- are born to parents who are not married.
This might be a shameful distinction in many spots around the world. In the land of the Vikings, it is a point of pride.
The island may have been settled by marauding brutes, but it is now the most feminist society on the planet, and with that one tantalizing fact, Sunday's episode of "The Wonder List" was born."

5 Tips for Working Through Your Emotional Divorce

5 Tips for Working Through Your Emotional Divorce | Divorce Law for Women by Paul H. Nathan Law Offices | Scoop.it

The definition of divorce is “the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or other competent body,” but anyone who has been through a divorce knows that the division of finances, assets, and belongings only represents a small portion of what it means to get divorced.

There is almost always an emotional divorce that coincides with the physical divorce, which often gets neglected during the process of ending the marriage. Not recognizing how powerful the emotional experience can be leaves couples vulnerable to the rollercoaster of unexpected feelings that surface once a divorce is final. Signing your divorce decree is just one milestone in the greater divorce process, and knowing this will help you prepare for the journey ahead.

The physical divorce is more straight forward than the emotional divorce. Separating belongings, living in separate homes, and not having daily contact are all ways to physically divorce. The emotional divorce is not as concrete or tangible, and it requires a lot more patience, compassion and understanding. The emotional divorce cannot be rushed; it’s a delicate matter that needs special attention and care.

Paul H. Nathan Law Offices's insight:

Every divorce is emotional, and some more than others... here are 5 tips to help even more!

30 Life Lessons Learned The Hard Way

30 Life Lessons Learned The Hard Way | Divorce Law for Women by Paul H. Nathan Law Offices | Scoop.it

When my ex and I first split, I asked myself, “Why did this all happen?” I didn’t have the ability to process all that this divorce would have in store for me. Eventually though, I pulled so many gems and appreciation for my dissolved marriage. I grew so much and I healed. Even though divorce always seems to bring about new situations and sometimes struggles, I am not defined by divorce anymore.

And then when I met someone I really adored in my single world almost two years after divorce and it didn’t pan out due to issues on his end, I asked the same question, somewhat differently: ‘Why did I meet this man?”

This time though, it didn’t take me so long to garner life lessons and information to help me in my search for the “perfect for me” partner.

Giada De Laurentiis admits she hit a bit of a rough patch after divorcing Todd Thompson, her husband of 11 years. Now, she feels like she’s finally turning over a new leaf.

“I had a rough year and a half, no question,” she told E! News recently. “But I think that all of us go through stuff. I checked out for a little bit. I tried to stay under the radar to protect my family and my daughter, mostly. But now I feel like I’ve turned the corner.”

De Laurentiis, who finalized her divorce in September, has one daughter with Thompson. She has been linked to TV producer Shane Farley since November, and things seem to be going well for the pair.
