Firewall Law Could Infringe on Free Speech

Firewall Law Could Infringe on Free Speech | Fahrenheit 451 is full of censorship and so is our world today | Scoop.it

If the censorship that the Protect IP Act goes into place the United States will be infringing on the publics guaranteed freedom of speech through the constitution. Such censorship is very similar to the censorship that takes place in the novel, Fahrenheit 451. The novels censorship is much more drastic by burning all books in existence but the government will be deleting information from the internet which has essentially the same effect. I believe the government has the right to use censorship on in the Internet but only for the sole purpose of protecting the public, not from blocking the public or deleting entire sites as they would under this Act. As the article says, “The intention is not the same as China’s Great Firewall, a nationwide system of Web censorship, but the practical effect could be similar”. The United States is a country known for its freedoms, why would a country know for that pass something that resembles the acts of the restrictive Chinese government? Censorship is something that should only be used to protect not restrict. In the novel censorship was wholly used to restrict the public. The United States should be attempting to oppose such acts. Insinuating that the censorship of the Internet should not be restricted as the Protect IP Act suggests. It directly goes against the U.S constitutional rights of freedom of speech. The burning of books in the novel abolished the peoples right to freedom of speech, which is something the United States should never come close to.

U.S. asks journals to censor bird flu studies

This article is just one of the many examples in which the government does not allow the public to have full access to certain information. In some cases censorship is a force that needs to be used by the government. I believe that the government is correct about the censorship of the bird flu information. As it says in the article, the information can be extremely dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands, “the bird flu virus is extremely deadly in people who are directly exposed to infected birds”. The U.S does not want that to happen. On the other hand, the government in the novel, Fahrenheit 451, completely cut the public off from information that the public had a right to know. In the novel all books are burned, no matter what they contained. Whereas, in the censorship of flu data, the public is not completely cut off and some may see the information if qualified to do so. This censorship is acceptable and needed unlike the censorship in the novel was. The censorship in the novel was to extreme and limited the human mind to think and be individual. It made every person equal and left no room for change. The censorship in the flu case is completely necessary to ensure the public there own safety against the dangerous new version of the bird flu; it does not limit the human mind. If the government does not censor this information the new version of the flu can be made by terrorists and be released into the public resulting in mass deaths of the public.

Hackers to launch satellites to block Internet censorship

Hackers to launch satellites to block Internet censorship | Fahrenheit 451 is full of censorship and so is our world today | Scoop.it

In the novel, Fahrenheit 451, the people barely tried to over-run the censorship that they were placed under. Today, the people are attempting to go against all censorship place on the accessibility of the information on the Internet. Hackers are trying to put satellites in orbit to block all censorship on the Internet, allowing the public to have full access to whatever information is on the Internet with no boundaries. They want the Internet to become “uncensorable”. They see the upside to this, having limitless ways of communication. They are overlooking the downside, which is all people having complete access to all the information on the Internet. I do not agree with the full censorship that took place in the novel but I do agree with the censorship of certain information on the Internet. Some information can have dangerous effects if the wrong people obtain it. Information about certain topics is not meant to be known by all people and is censored for a reason. Censorship may go against that the public has the right to know all information but it is a tool that in necessary to be used by the government. The government should censor certain information but to a reasonable extent. Censorship can be used to protect the public, not always to limit the people. in the novel the censorship is taken too far by the government and brainwashes the public brain. But if the public today had access to everything mass chaos could break out and terrorists could easily obtain information making terrorist attacks an easy thing to accomplish.
