Fewer Noses Stuck in Books In America, Survey Finds - New York Times

In this article, it shows the decline of many readers in America, all different ages and from different backgrounds. The survey, “Reading at Risk,” shows the number of people that no longer read. As a result of fewer readers in America studies have shown that there are less people who do volunteer work and charity work. Studies have also shown that, ''Of literary readers, 43 percent perform charity work; only 17 percent of nonreaders do. That's not a subtle difference.'' With fewer volunteers, the community will not be happy and the people shall blame books for causing unhappiness propelling for books to finally be burned like in the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Overall, adults read less due to America’s fast paste; as a result, adolescent readers are rare to be found. Younger generation’s lack of reading is a result of the education systems that do not insist students to read more. As more people spend their free time in front of television screens or computer screens, the amount of readers decrease each and every day. The diminishing of readers is among all ethnic groups, ages and sex; studies have shown that women read more than men in all ethnic groups. If the younger generations of readers increase, there may be no hope left for books and society. Schools must push for more reading programs that would birth more avid readers and a chance for books to survive in the future. Sadly, the future for America looks a lot like the world Montag lived.

CNN.com - The Marquee

In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the pure purpose of fireman was to destroy books. Books caused people to think which would cause unhappiness. Now in this present day and age, book editors are being fired because of low income of the newspaper. A group of readers had a “read-in” due to the firing of the book editor. It begins with the decline of book editor positions and then less and less people have a desire to read books because it takes up too much time. People become unhappy as told by the government in the novel. Then history is altered for it to seem that books are evil and make people unhappy. More people should get back into reading books so that Fahrenheit 451 is not our future.

Due to the cutting of book reviews in newspapers it propels for the people to have the curiosity of reading a book. In effect, it further declines the number of readers in America causing a reduction in publishing of books and then finally, books all together. As a result of book coverage diminishing in newspapers people are now going online for their news and information causing less of books and newspapers. Montag curiosity of the books brought him to be detected by the Hound. I believe that the people who protest against the cutting of book coverage, they shall become the people who memorize the books and through several generations a boy or girl will be the next Clarisse McClellan. This article shows the start of the decline of readers and the sad beginning of a society like in the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Newspaper Publishers: It's Time To Embrace "Fly-By" News Readers

Newspaper Publishers: It's Time To Embrace "Fly-By" News Readers | Fahrenheit 451 | Scoop.it

As the surge of technical advances increases the production of newspapers withers and the readers decrease as well. More people are searching online for the news diminishing the use of newspapers. Newspaper companies struggle to bring in more buyers; they try advertisement and try to top off the other newspaper companies. The only way for newspapers to keep functioning is to go online which has its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is it is more convenient for the people and there is more resource. The disadvantage is that people will not be loyal readers to that one newspaper. Due to this increase of online newspapers, the production of newspapers will end cause a shortage of readers and in the end affecting the book companies that will stop publishing newspapers.

Montag is foolish to believe Captain Beatty stories of how the past was, that fireman always burned books. Beatty shows how without books history can be altered. With the destruction of all these “illegal” books, the government could alter history and make it seem that books cause unhappiness. Newspapers and books record history and if they begin to decline the future of America and maybe the whole world would be a society like the one Montag lived. The reason the world could become like Fahrenheit 451 world is due to the fact of the increase of readers online who are not consistent and prefer online than on paper. Book and newspaper readers wither away as online readers increase propelling for books to be less important and could have a tragic end like the books in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
