Censors Pull Reins as China TV, Chasing Profit, Gets Racy

Censors Pull Reins as China TV, Chasing Profit, Gets Racy | Fahrenheit 45 - Article Analysis | Scoop.it

A dating show helped set off the toughest crackdown on television in years, exposing the tension at the heart of the Communist Party’s control of entertainment.

More than any other article I researched, this one relates heavily to Fahrenheit 451. The Communist Party has direct control over the entertainment industry in China and the ability to censor whatever they like. The viewers have as much control over what they're watching as Montag had over the information being released in his society. There is no doubt that the Chinese people are attempting to overcome this censorship and get the word to the public, but with the Communists lurking and trying to quiet it all down, it is a bit difficult. Nevertheless, they prevailed in getting information to the people through this dating show that would have been difficult to get to the masses otherwise. This situation is reminiscent of the congregation of readers that Montag joins at the end of the novel who memorize books to conserve them for a future where they can be put onto paper once again. It's great that the Chinese are trying to move beyond the censors that are pressed onto their entertainment industry and hopefully they will be able to achieve a society without censorship as Montag strived for as well.

Lines Are Drawn on Legislation Against Internet Piracy

Lines Are Drawn on Legislation Against Internet Piracy | Fahrenheit 45 - Article Analysis | Scoop.it

The House and the Senate are looking to cut off oxygen for sites that offer free copies of entertainment by taking aim at search engines like Google and Yahoo that allow the pirates to function.

The internet is one of the most important and central part of American culture that we pride ourselves on, because there are virtually no censors or walls to stop us from saying what we want, how we want, and when we want. But Congress is making an attempt at "cleaning" the internet up a bit by censoring sites that allow pirated data to circulate, which has outraged millions in the United States who want to keep their internet freedoms. Fahrenheit 451 provides a perfect example of how censorship starts small, but gradually grows as it is able to become more and more restraining. Burning books most likely began through banning books and censoring information, and is censoring the internet not the first step? By removing our most civil liberty from us, it is unclear whether the government will slowly ease its way into further censorships or leave our liberties at peace. There are many advocates who are resolute in fighting against the censors, so maybe in Fahrenheit 451 there was no strong group of people fighting for their rights and that is why their society collapsed. With all the activists opposed to the legislation, we will be able to achieve all of our goals in a safe and easy manner rather than having to break federal laws like Montag had to do. While we still have all our rights in tact we should voice our concerns and put our opinions into the public, because all Americans should have a standpoint in the government’s policies.

U.S. asks journals to censor bird flu studies

U.S. asks journals to censor bird flu studies | Fahrenheit 45 - Article Analysis | Scoop.it

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A U.S.scientific advisory board Tuesday asked two scientific journals to leave out data from research studies on a lab-made version of bird flu that could spread more easily to humans,...

Even in our own uncensored society in the current day, things can easily be censored if they pose a threat to a certain group. This issue would refer to the theme of censorship and how other countries will not be able to access information within these studies due to the fear the United States has for it falling into the wrong hands. By encouraging that these studies become partially censored, the board is inadvertently instilling in Americans a fear of the terrorism we thought we were safe from. Similar to the way that Montag cringes every time he hears passing jets and talk of war, although society urges him that everything is okay, yet he discovers in the end that the country is in turmoil. In Fahrenheit 451, it is clear that our ignorance to the matters at hand allow the government to take control of the news and censor the information we should be obtaining. By censoring these studies, Americans will be confused and concerned as to why the research conducted is a danger to us, therefore should it have been researched at all?
