HowStuffWorks "How the Placebo Effect Works"

HowStuffWorks "How the Placebo Effect Works" | FAFSA | Scoop.it
The placebo effect happens when you decide a therapy will make you better and your belief makes it so. Is the placebo effect real or is it in your head?
Ace Cato's insight:

Does placebo really works? Some people are not really sick they just think they are. Doctors are trying to used the placebo effect to lessen massive amount of precription drug use. In the US, the prescription drugs are so high that insurance company on my perspective take a well advantage of them. Maybe the doctors way of saving the patient as well making their pocket doesn't hurt as much is using placebo therapy.

Marijuana advocates in Colorado are trying again to add post-traumatic stress disorder to the list of conditions for which doctors can recommend medical marijuana under Colorado law.

Via James McKeon, The Law Offices of Denver Latimer
Ace Cato's insight:

Honestly, I'm totally against Marijuana medication. Why? The largest percentage of cardholders is 18-to-34-year old who list stress, and insomnia as the reason for their desire to smoke dope. Less than 5% of the cardholders in California are listed as chronically ill or have debilitating life-threatening illness. In addition to this, research gas shown that smoking marijuana on a regular basis is not only harmful but can actually lower the IQ of teen users by up to 8 points.

Pharmacist toes line between patient safety, provider status
American Pharmacists Association, pharmacist.com
“Ted” walked into FMS Pharmacy in Bessemer, AL, with a paper sack of some 50 prescription bottles.
Ace Cato's insight:

I learned that working as a pharmacy is actually kind of stressful job. Especially, when you have a patient who can afford his medications and/or they don't know which medication to take. So, there are situations when pharmacists are torn between, you don't know if you will send the patient home with something that’s potentially dangerous, or overstep my bounds and risk potentially committing fraud?

A construction worker with an aching back surprised his ER doctor by refusing a painkiller.

Via Giuseppe Fattori
Ace Cato's insight:

Exposure with pain pills such as percolate, Vicodin and the likes are really alarming. As my mom being a physician in the Philippines we used to hear stories about cases she encounter at the emergency room, but not so many pain pills related cases; since we don't really have this codeine based pills at home. as she works now in the pharmacy field she knows, and see how rampant the pain pills consumption here in Everett area was amazingly high. Reading this article made more aware of this things and be careful dealing with other teens who i know be at risk of this kind of hobbit.

Newer drugs being studied when it comes to HIV/aids is getting more funds and more attention. Knowing that as the days go by the risks of getting HIV/aids due to laziness practicing safe sex or just plain ignorance is getting more annoying. Big companies are now trying to get the first drug studied is it for the purpose of the cure or money. Reading not only this article makes me think that at least the field of pharmacy is putting more effort on the study of the new medicine that will benefit all of us.

Career Opportunities for Pharmacists

Ace Cato's insight:

Over time pharmacists have expanded their opportunities in many different ways. For example, they're playing an increasing role in the "wellness" movement, especially through counseling about preventive medicine. In addition, If pharmacists develop a desire to combine their professional talents with the challenge of the fast-moving community pharmacy practice, they will often consider a management position within a chain pharmacy practice or ownership of their own pharmacy. Furthermore, another career option in pharmacy is represented by the pharmaceutical industry which produces chemicals, prescription and on prescription drugs, and other health products. This informations motivated me to pursue this occupation. I'm very thankful that we have a class like this, that we can read articles and give our own opinions. It's a good opportunity for us, and I'm sure it will benefit me or us(students) in the future with this concrete informations.

What Do E-Cigs Matter?

What Do E-Cigs Matter? | FAFSA | Scoop.it

Smokers have tried their best to ally themselves with vapers. I think that most vapers ally themselves with Smokers. But there is an enormous alliance of interests which militate against vapers. Note that I speak about vapers rather than e-cigs.

The decision of the New York Council to ban e-cigs as though they were tobacco cigs is scientific nonsense. That is perfectly obvious. It follows therefore that NYC intends to denormalise/demonise vapers purely upon appearances.

Via GolfKahn, PositiveEnerG, Lindsay Fox
Ace Cato's insight:

I learned that vapors or so called "e-cigarettes" was invented by a company called Ruyan in in China, 2003, and first introduced to the U.S. market in 2007. The question are, what do e-cigarettes matter? Do they really help you to stop from smoking? So, it's not surprising that, when a new device that has the potential to help people quit smoking hits the market, many smokers are willing to give it a try.

HIPAA Regulations

HIPAA Regulations | FAFSA | Scoop.it
Evolving HIPAA regulations are setting a new industry standard that is easier for officials to enforce than ever before. Businesses within the healthcare industry must adhere to HIPAA rules and regulations or face penalties. Training

Via John Smith
Ace Cato's insight:

According to the article. The challenge for businesses within the healthcare industry is to protect private health information while offering patients easier access to their health records. Using interoffice software that integrates HIPAA regulations is a solution that provides organizations with the tools that are necessary to meet guidelines in the age of technology based information systems. Clients can access their information in an electronic form easily and the software will provide a security net for your business to rely on when working toward meeting HIPAA rules and regulations. I think this is a good idea. So, patients can also request their personal health information in an electronic form. Because nowadays, almost every body is using electronic devices.
