The literary world long ago accepted that “To Kill a Mockingbird,” published in 1960, would remain Harper Lee’s only novel. The reclusive author, now 88, has politely, but firmly, resisted entreaties from her fans, admirers and colleagues for a second swing at literary immortality. Then an amazing thing happened on Tuesday morning. HarperCollins Publishing announced that Harper Lee had agreed to the publication of “Go Set a Watchman,” a sequel to “To Kill a Mockingbird” but written before that book was published. It is set in the 1950s in the same fictional town of Maycomb, Ala., and features many of the same characters, including Atticus Finch and his daughter Scout. Ms. Lee believed the manuscript had been lost or destroyed decades ago and didn’t know of its existence until last fall
