How to Attend the Machinima Expo

How to Attend the Machinima Expo | Expo Update | Scoop.it

The Machinima Expo will be taking place this Friday through Sunday (Nov 16-18th). The actual festival takes place inside of the virtual world of Second Life, but we are also LiveStreaming the entire event through our machinima-expo.com website. If you are reading this, you are at our website and can watch all of the programming and films we have chosen to screen. There is a chat channel to the right of the screen where you can comment on the films and/or events as they happen. You don't have to register, just type in a name and you are good to go.

If you want to know what the programming schedule is click this link for Programming. If you want a list of all of the films screening and what's on any particular screening reel, download the Movie Reels document. Both are Google docs so you can download them in any format you like.

If you'd like to attend the Expo by coming to Second Life, just click the slurl below and follow it to the fountain area in Dainie Fraina's beautiful Manhattan Reverie New York sim. In the picture above, I'm sitting near the fountain with the Expo theater behind me.

Click to go to the Second Life location of the Machinima Expo

The Expo is being broadcast live 24/7 at the theater. But that's not all, you can explore the New York by checking out the shops (several are from our sponsors Muvizu, Moviestorm, 3Dconnexion, Open This End, Reallusion and Unity3D), exploring Central Park and perhaps dancing in the Manhattan Reverie's night club. More information on the Midnight Manhattan Reverie Second Life sim is here.

We also have the VideoDome theater which is showing select machinima from our screening reels. The VideoDome is a unique, 360 degree theater that has to be seen to be believed. Created by Thoth Jentzen, the VideoDome is a kaliedescope style presentation that is mind blowing. Access to the theater is through a special "door" right next to the Expo Theater. You can't miss it.

Our 2012 Machinima Expo Jury

Our 2012 Machinima Expo Jury | Expo Update | Scoop.it

We are very proud to announce our 5-member Machinima Expo Jury for 2012. These 3 men and 2 women have a wide range of backgrounds, but they all share an interest in Machinima as an art form. Some jurists approach machinima from an academic point of view and have published books on the subject, while others are working professionals and see machinima as a contemporary form of entertainment that is becoming increasingly popular. These diverse perspectives are exactly what the Expo looks for in selecting a jury to screen our very best films.

It's that time of year, we are planning to tidy up our website, clean out the clutter and generally make the site easier to navigate and use.
You can help us by letting us know what is working for you, and what isn't.

Have you submitted a film, how easy was that to do?
We are looking at new colour schemes, slicker buttons, and simplifying our site.
Do you have a favourite site you love?
Why not post a link, and tell us what you love about your choice.

Complete Machinima Expo 2012 Programming Schedule, Press Release and New Expo Logo

Complete Machinima Expo 2012 Programming Schedule, Press Release and New Expo Logo | Expo Update | Scoop.it

Announcing the official Programming Schedule for the 2012 Machinima Expo! We are also posting our latest press release which we hope you will pass on to anyone you think would be interested. AND we want to thank Lucy Georges for designing our new EXPO LOGO! Feel free to download and use the logo to promote the Expo (see end of post).

Expo Programming Schedule

Our sincere thanks to Pooky Amsterdam for putting together such incredible programming for the 2012 Machinima Expo. Over 12 hours of presentations and discussions will take place over 3 days (November 16, 17 & 18, 2012). And well over half of the programming will be live.

Basically, the programming is arranged by theme for each day. Friday will be devoted to machinima craft with presentations by Moviestorm, Reallusion (iClone), Muvizu and more. Saturday will be more of a panels and discussions day with a Keynote address by Torley Linden of Second Life, visits by Paul Marino and much more. Sunday will be devoted to the Expo awards ceremony. We will announce all prize winners and screen each film immediately following the award.

And, of course, all of the Expo will take place at our beautiful Manhattan Reverie sim in Second Life (and via Livestream at machinima-expo.com).

We have worked diligently to organize the logistics for this year's Expo so that your experience will be more efficient and enjoyable. Please feel free to download the schedule and post on your site or send via email.

Notices for films will start going out tomorrow (Sunday)

We've double-checked our votes and have finished deciding on all films submitted to the 2012 Machinima Expo. Notices for films will start going out tomorrow (Sunday). You will either receive a polite no, a notice that your film was selected for the Jury, the screening reels or honorable mention. We had a total of 150 films submitted this year. 10 Jury films were selected, 50 screeners and 21 honorable mention films. That means we will be showing about 40% of the films submitted to us. Very pleased with the quality of films submitted.

Congratulations to those filmmakers who were chosen. And a "Thank You!" to those who weren't. We hope you'll keep working on your craft and submit a film we can screen NEXT year!

oWho is doing what at the 2012 Machinima Expo

Who is doing what at the 2012 Machinima Expo
After our talk through of the complete Expo last Sunday (9/23), I thought I’d put together a list of “who is doing what” at the Expo in November. You can use this document to find out what work’s being done, to know what you are doing and to figure out where we need additional staff to help out.
I. Programming
Pooky Amsterdam is doing all of the programming scheduling, logistics and organizing. Ricky is advising and helping out.
We will announce the final program sometime in late October, although a preliminary programming schedule will be posted in September.
We need someone to design/create the program for use at the Expo. Deadline for Program and final Programming is November 1st, 2012
II. Sponsors
Ricky is in charge of our sponsors. Iain Friar and Pooky are helping him. Announcing all sponsors by middle of October along with prizes posted on blog. Kate Lee has been creating our sponsor page on the machinima-expo.com site.
We shouldn’t forget to include those individuals who donated money early in June. I’ll post a list for Kate.
III. Backstage/Frontstage at the Expo, including Livestream of events
Russell Boyd is in charge of all Livestream events including live events at the Expo, pre-recorded events and Screening/Jury reels (plus other reels)
MC on Friday, 11/16 is Ricky with Pooky as Stage Manager.
MC on Saturday is Pooky, with Ricky as Stage Manager
MC on Sunday is Kinte, with Ricky/Pooky doing Stage Managing.
Kate Fosk and Damien Valentine will be assisting Stage Managers
Petlove will be running additional cameras for all three days.
Waiting on confirmation from Ken White for running Skype audio for all 3 days.
Daimie (owner of NY sim) and her designer will be setting up our stage for live events and screenings.
Bob is the owner of Videodoime, the very hip video screening space we are using as well.
We need additional staff to help with making signs, man the info booth and work as PA’s (production assitants)
IV. Screening Reels
thebiz is creating the “honorable mention” reel
Ricky is creating the pre/post titles + credits for each film.
Reels are as follows: (subject to change)
1. Screening reels (mostly like 2 or 3, 50 minute reels
2. Jury reel (most likely 1 reel, 60 minutes)
3. Spanish machinima reel (from our Spanish partners)
4. French machinima reel (from our French partners)
5. Mamachinima reel.
6. honorable mention reel (30 -40 minutes)
7. Second Life machinima reel
V. Promotion/Advertising
AnimaTechnica is doing the twitter posts
Ricky is doing blog/FB posts
Ricky is creating the short 15-30 ads for sponsors that will fit into Screening reels and perhaps during video breaks
VI Video Breaks during programming
Ricky is working on this but will need help to create video breaks primarily for Saturday programming.
Also will need to shoot parts of NY sim and Videodoime to use for breaks/technical difficulties video. Discuss with Russell how much we need. Ricky will find extra staff for this (perhaps Frita or AT?)
Three people are executive producers of the Expo
Ricky Grove
Kate Fosk
Pooky Amsterdam

Submit your Films NOW!

Submit your Films NOW! | Expo Update | Scoop.it
Each year we get close to a third of our submissions in the last week of entry.

I know you have to crochet table mats for your mum, wash the sheep, make gooseberry marmalade, recycle your duvets into soft toys for the local dog rescue centre...we do know how busy you are...

..but spare a thought for the screening team (insert violin music here) whose sheep will be unwashed, table mats incomplete and second duvets all stuffed behind the sofa come September...think how crazy they sound now...then imagine them switched up a notch as they try to view all those movies at once.

Put down that crochet hook, push the Sheep shampoo to the back of the shelf, then take a torch...tread carefully...but venture deep into the bowels of your file system...yes..there it is...'my great movie that just needs re-rendering to get rid of that odd noise at 03:14:07', 'that thing I made with whosit, the thing with the music and no title', and 'this movie I was going to submit in July but then the shed needed painting'. Remember those?

Why not put some time aside this weekend, unpeel a bar of chocolate, and sit back....no don't sit back...sit up..get the thing finished...and submit those films, you know you want to (insert mesmer eyes)
