Geogebra | Great Maths Teaching Ideas

Geogebra | Great Maths Teaching Ideas | Exploring Math Through Activities | Scoop.it
Beata's insight:

This is one of the most interesting websites where teachers can find very good sources for their classrooms. The website allows teachers to link to many blogs created by practicing teachers, It allows them to learn about different software which can help students learn as well as funny math problems or projects.  Students engage in activities which incorporate manipulatives and allow students to see the direct relationship between what they see and how it can be represented in math.  One of these activities is allowing students to work with programs such as GeoGebra. The website provides students with ready to use templates that can be downloaded. Students love these types of activities which include technology and manipulatives.

I recommend that teachers use this source when looking for ways in which they could use technology to help students better understand formulas shapes as well as relationships in mathematics. These activities could be used for classroom instruction, homework or projects. They help students visualize and better understand mathematical concepts and teachers can find many sources and tips to make their teaching more effective.

Beata's insight:

Incorporate music into your classroom! This is a website where you can find one of the most valuable sources for making connections between music and math.  Scott Beall is not only a high school math teacher but he is also a musician. Although on this website teachers can only find out some information about Beall’s book, they can also find more information about workshops or activities which incorporate other teacher’s opinions and suggestions. The book itself is a wonderful source for teachers. The book focuses on exploration of functions through mathematics.

This website is a valuable source for teachers who consider incorporating music into their math classroom and it is targeted for an audience who are practicing or future teachers. I suggest that teachers use this website as a source for great teaching material. The book Functional Melodies is rich in exploration activities and can build on the student’s knowledge of music. And the greatest part about this book is that each activity includes all necessary worksheets, music CD, as well as carefully written lesson plans. Check this website for a taste of what Scott Beall’s lessons look like and how you could use them in your classroom!

Illuminations: Search

Illuminations: Search | Exploring Math Through Activities | Scoop.it
Beata's insight:

Illuminations is a great resource for any teacher, not only high school but also middle and elementary school teachers. This website provides teachers with detailed explanation of interesting activities and games for students to explore in a math classroom. Segregated by content as well as grade level it is very easy to find the perfect activity for your class. Illuminations was created by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, which provides teachers with very valuable insight into how to teach math, as well as how to use other recourses to teach math besides the classroom textbook. I highly recommend visiting this website and using these powerful recourses in our classrooms.  These games and activities encourage students to think deeply and analyze different strategies and ways of solving problems instead of working on procedural problem sets from the textbook. All the activities are based on common core standards therefore allowing you as a teacher to incorporate them into your classroom.

I definitely recommend this resource either at the beginning of new chapter or concept as an exploration and introduction to certain topics, or as a closure to a unit or concept. I also recommend that teachers use these available activities to encourage group work as well as math talk which is very important for developing strong understanding of concepts and for justifying answers. Definitely a great recourse for any teacher !
