For Interns, Experience Isn't Always the Best Teacher

For Interns, Experience Isn't Always the Best Teacher | Experiential Learning Research | Scoop.it
Without rigorous, guided reflection, students are unlikely to learn much beyond what one gets from a part-time job.
Shawn Read's insight:

Experiential learning offers wonderful opportunities for students to apply classroom learning in a real world environment.  However, as with any course, care must be taken to ensure learning is at the centre of the student's experience.  This may be done through a variety of tested methods such development of learning objectives, mid-term evaluations, assignments, peer learning / mentoring, reflection, and work-term reports.  Contrary to the author's statements, when designed correctly, experiential learning opportunities such as Internships, Co-operative Education, and Service Learning, have the capacity to profoundly contribute to a students learning experience.

I do agree that some internships are poorly planned and lack academic rigor, but there are many examples of well run experience education programs.  I cringe at the author"s statement, "my discomfort with them is that students too often do not learn the kinds of things that higher education should be about."  Too often we are witness to a very narrow view of what higher education has been, should be, and will be.  As we rapidly move further into the 21st century students are increasingly able to engage in varied modalities of learning that contribute greatly to their acquisition of knowledge and understanding.

As educators we need to look at higher education that provides  multipurpose learning environments for our students to thrive.

"Theory to practice and practice to theory is one such path for our students to embrace."

How updating the communication device known as a “diploma” will help students acquire the right skills and help companies hire the right talent.Every year, millions of Americans embark on the quest
Shawn Read's insight:

The value of experiential education is critical to a student's education but there is continued resistance from post-secondary institutions and faculty to embrace this model of education.  Bridging theory to practice provides a multi-purpose learning evironment that students require to be successful in the 21st century.

Many schools are overhauling their career centers to help students survive in a bad economy.
Shawn Read's insight:

TRU is involved in much of what the article suggests, however these activities must be coordinated within the academic structure of the university and not simply an add-on.  Post secondary Administrators need to get out of the ivory tower and move education forward into the 21st century.
