Gas prices are one of the big expenses nowadays. Forget food, forget utilities; if one cannot afford gas, they have a problem. The gas market is highly manipulated, because they have freedom in their pricing. When creating a budget it is best to estimate high for gas, in case of an unnatural spike in gas prices.

Metropolitan areas are still being hit hard by the housing crash. Many people are homeless, or facing that cliff. With house values going down, people are choosing to stay put rather than move, which harms the real estate companies. Cities continue to be in the "dumps" in regards to the housing crash, and there isn't much we can do about it.

Increasing food prices will drive prices up elsewhere, including in the prices of daily lives. People's expenses will go up without an increase in income. This is particularly important to consider when budgeting. Cutting out unnecesary costs and saving money on other things is the key to making a successful budget.
