Russian internet giant Yandex has announced the test launch of a new autonomous ride-hailing service in the special economic zone of Innopolis.

"Around 100 people have signed up to participate in the driverless taxi trials, and they will be able to choose from a number of pre-set destinations, including the university, stadium, and apartment blocks."

sounds like technology available in the AV shuttles with vehicles stopping at specific pre-defined, pre-programmed destinations. Not exactly the L4 technology that people are reading into "self-driving taxi service".

The potential power of the Greek sun

The potential power of the Greek sun | Sustainable transportation: SEAMless mobility - Shared, Electric, Autonomous (driverless), OMNImodal mobility | Scoop.it
A long-distance grid could link large-scale solar plants to the rest of Europe
Catherine Kargas's insight:

"Why not build a series of the latest large-scale solar plants in Greece? We could build supply lines first to meet the needs of Greek consumers in Athens and elsewhere but also those of its neighbours in the south-east of Europe. Why not go further and put in place a long-distance grid linking Greek supplies to the markets of central and northern Europe, including the largest market of all — Germany. A single grid would enhance security of supply and would overcome many of the challenges of intermittent supply associated with renewables, such as solar and wind, because power could be brought together from multiple sources. A broader network, with multiple inputs, including back-up provided by gas-fired plants, would put in place a reliable base of low-cost electricity supply. If China can think about energy networks on this scale, Europe can too."

We're Five Years From Safe, Driverless Cars For All, Says Carlos 'Superman' Ghosn

We're Five Years From Safe, Driverless Cars For All, Says Carlos 'Superman' Ghosn | Sustainable transportation: SEAMless mobility - Shared, Electric, Autonomous (driverless), OMNImodal mobility | Scoop.it
The auto industry is experiencing a paradigm shift with the growth of the global electric vehicle (EV) market, as well as the vast potential offered by disruptive new sectors like the autonomously-driven vehicle. Carlos Ghosn explains where he thinks the future lies.
Catherine Kargas's insight:

Ghosn warned that auto industry is far from taking driverless technology to the mass market. He predicted it would take some time -- perhaps until 2022-23. “It’s not because we’re not able to run cars today without drivers on a circuit -- we can. But … to move from this to putting the car in the [mass] market and be totally safe would need five or six years,” he said.

Realistic? It will take more than technology to bring these cars to commercial usage. It will take public acceptance and the regulations that will support their introduction.

Ride-hailing group partners with 31 automakers to make vehicle ownership redundant
Catherine Kargas's insight:

Didi envisages its alliance becoming a “car operator” rather than purely making, selling or leasing out cars. The alliance will consist of three platforms: online car rental, which will include Didi’s current ride-hailing platform service; a time-sharing and rental platform, which looks to replace household car use; and an after-sales service platform for maintaining the cars. “The Didi Auto Alliance will become a provider of integrated transportation services combining auto leasing and sales, auto finance, auto service, fleet operation and car-sharing solutions in China and beyond,”

With its alliance, Didi also wants to become the biggest operator of electric vehicles in China, aiming for 1m by 2020. The company has 260,000 such vehicles on its platform, run by drivers and corporate partners.

California, 16 other states sue Trump admin over plan to scrap car emission standards | The Star | Sustainable transportation: SEAMless mobility - Shared, Electric, Autonomous (driverless), OMNImodal mobility | Scoop.it
Sixteen other states are joining California in the lawsuit, which takes aim at a plan by the Environmental Protection Agency to scrap standards for vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2025.
Catherine Kargas's insight:

California has a unique waiver that allows it to set its own tailpipe emissions standards for vehicles, which it has used to combat smog and more recently global warming. Twelve other states have adopted the California standards as their own.

Automakers have argued that the current requirements would have cost the industry billions of dollars and raised vehicle prices due to the cost of developing the necessary technology.

Data gathered by autonomous cars and shared with insurance companies could be used to keep the vehicles from taking undue risks.

Insurers controlling SDCs: that's a different approach. Are insurers equipped to do so? Likely not. Would mobility providers agree to something like this? Likely not. Despite this, I think this article provides food for thought with respect to AV data sharing between mobility providers and other organizations (government agencies, insurance, etc) that will need to access data
