Here Are All the Reasons It’s a Bad Idea to Let a Few Tech Companies Monopolize Our Data

Here Are All the Reasons It’s a Bad Idea to Let a Few Tech Companies Monopolize Our Data | Everything is related to everything else | Scoop.it
“It’s no good fighting an election campaign on the facts,” Cambridge Analytica’s managing director told an undercover reporter, “because actually it’s all about emotion.” To target U.S. voters and appeal to their hopes, neuroses, and fears, the political consulting firm needed to train its algorithm to predict and map personality traits. That required lots of personal data. So, to build these psychographic profiles, Cambridge Analytica enlisted a Cambridge University professor, whose app collected data on about 50 million Facebook users and their friends. Facebook, at that time, allowed app developers to collect this personal data. Facebook argued that Cambridge Analytica and the professor violated its data polices. But this was not the first time its policies were violated. Nor is it likely to be the last.

The OSGeo UN Committee promotes the development and use of open source software that meets UN needs and supports the aims of the UN. In the last few years, the Committee has mainly worked on the UN Open GIS Initiative, a project  “... to identify and develop an Open Source GIS bundle that meets the requirements of UN operations, taking full advantage of the expertise of mission partners (partner nations, technology contributing countries, international organizations, academia, NGOs, private sector). The strategic approach shall be developed with best and shared principles, standards and ownership, in a prioritized manner that addresses capability gaps and needs without duplicating efforts of other Member States or entities. The UN Open GIS Initiative strategy shall collaboratively and cooperatively develop, validate, assess, migrate, and implement sound technical capabilities with all the appropriate documentation and training that in the end provides a united effort to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of utilizing Open Source GIS around the world.” (more details at [1]).

Magic Box - UNICEF's real-time data visualization | Everything is related to everything else | Scoop.it
Welcome to UNICEF's real-time data visualization! This project is in its alpha version and is a continuous work in progress. The data available does not necessarily represent a complete inventory of a country's school locations and level of Internet connectivity. We are always looking for more partners to validate (and add!) to our existing datasets. Please contact the School Mapping team to learn more.

Navigating this map:This map brings together a wide range of data, including school location and other key attributes as well as information on school Internet connectivity, both in terms of speed (Mbs) and type (2G and 3G). Click on a country to see what information is currently available and on individual dots to find out more details for a particular school.

Predicting travel times with artificial neural ... | GeoNet | Everything is related to everything else | Scoop.it
Calculating travel times is a foundational piece in transportation logistics, urban design, asset management, retail, etc. At Esri, we just completed a research project where we used artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to train an artificial neural network to predict travel times for transportation networks with a large number of complex, hard-to-model, and hidden variables. For this project, we partnered with NVIDIA, who provided us with GP100 and GV100 cards, which made this experiment feasible form the computation standpoint.

"Education and Training as Personalized Learning

“Training is for certainty, education is for uncertainty, and we are living in increasingly uncertain times.” This statement emphasizes the important role of education in times when training, a skill and task-oriented endeavor, is gaining increased attention. Education starts early in life and equally provides the arts and science behind the process of completing tasks. As we witness rapid transformation in the multidisciplinary field of geospatial intelligence (GEOINT), training and education are expected to complement each other. We educate people for critical thinking and train them to expand their knowledge base for increased performance. Combining both throughout one’s career is especially valuable in addressing the problems of “being educated but poorly trained” or “well trained and poorly educated.”"

How Fast Is AI Progressing? Stanford's New Report Card for Artificial Intelligence

How Fast Is AI Progressing? Stanford's New Report Card for Artificial Intelligence | Everything is related to everything else | Scoop.it
When? This is probably the question that futurists, AI experts, and even people with a keen interest in technology dread the most. It has proved famously difficult to predict when new developments in AI will take place. The scientists at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence in 1956 thought that perhaps two months would be enough to make “significant advances” in a whole range of complex problems, including computers that can understand language, improve themselves, and even understand abstract concepts.
