Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire are a pair that has been proven to work in country and popular music before. Kelly's single "Because of You" was re-debuted as a duet between the two and they have been friends ever since. The friendship is further proof of the popularization between country music. Their single and appearance on CMT’s “Crossroads” kicked off a relationship between pop music and country that has continued to grow.”
The pair is rumored to be collaborating on a new album with each other and Clarkson hinted in a tweet earlier this week that country superstar Trisha Yearwood may also be working with them. Clakrson is also engaged to Reba’s stepson, who happens to also be Blake Shelton’s manager. It seems like Kelly can’t get enough of country music and as a country music fan, I hope this continues. I enjoy the duets and the musical collaborations that have come out of the country/pop movement.

Country music is making strides towards the mainstream popular media again. With ABC’s new show “Nashville” being renewed for a second season due to it’s widespread popularity. The show follows the life of country music superstars and provides a look into the world of country music. Not only is it being accepted by fans, but it’s also getting attention from country music artists. Some of the biggest names in country music made guest appearances on the show as themselves. This show is only adding to the popularization of country music.
The country music community aren’t the only ones taking notice. The primetime Emmy’s have given actress Connie Britton a nomination for her portrayal of Rayna James, a veteran country star. The show’s acknowledgement of this show is a huge step for country music. The show itself is a wonderful tribute to the musical genre. The stars all do their own singing and to me that adds to the authenticity because country musicians traditionally don’t sing to tracks or prerecorded vocals. The nomination of the show for an Emmy is definitely helping country music to be noticed more.

Country music is becoming increasingly divided and I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t either see a revival of “traditional country” music or a complete split into a new genre for the more pop sounding artists. In the article many people’s responses toward the new country/pop genre were collectively negative. People weren’t as offended by Ashton Kucher as they were by non country artists performing at the American Country Music Awards. I will agree that the genre has lost its direction and in my opinion it has lost some of its authenticity that originally made the genre popular to begin with. Artists are losing sight of what their music stands for and using good songs with sub-par lyrics simply to make money and market to a vulenerable wanna be country crowd that seems to eating up this crossover music.
Some of these newer artists are collaborating with hip hop and pop artists, which has long been supported by the country music community. Musical collaboration with different genres is a great way to open yourself up to a new fan base and learn appreciation for another artists who does different things. The music though, is getting lost and more and more leaning towards being actual pop music. The use of drum machines in country music was completely unheard of 10 years ago and now it can be found in several new songs. I personally found Kutcher’s outfit just as offensive as the lack of “real” country music. I think that in making fun of the genre by dressing like that, he’s acknowledging that country music has lost most of its original credibility. His actions seemed to mock true country almost as much as Taylor Swift does by still continuing to say she’s a country artist. While this style is making money, it’s losing what it originally stood for.

Twitter has been growing by leaps and bounds in the past few years and country music is not falling behind on the trend. More than ever artists are using the social media site to reach their swarms of tech savvy fans. Twitter is changing social media and PR. For the Academy of Country Music Awards, twitter proved to increase the viewing audience and gain people’s interest more so than ever. The award show lined up a special correspondent to kick start a social media discussion about the awards and she lead the twitter discussion with specific hashtags and tweets directed to get a response.
The show’s awareness of the importance of social media showed in their numbers. Their social media activity was increased by 330% from the past year, an impressive number for any show. The viewers of the show also use social media to vote, as the ACM awards are decided upon by a fan driven vote. This use of social media shows that the networks are acknowledging the need to adapt as PR changes. Social media, especially twitter, is becoming the best way to reach large numbers of viewers or fans as the show airs. The use of real time tweets and guided discussions made for a very successful viewing, which will only continue to grow if they continue to utilize social media for their PR the way that they did last year.

Abercrombie and Fitch underestimated the loyalty of Taylor Swift fans. They released a shirt that said “More Boyfriends than T.S.”, which I personally think is pretty funny considering her track record with her many boyfriends. Fans of Swift were the ones who seemed to be causing the problem. They utilized the power of social media to voice their unhappiness and Abercrombie and Fitch listened. They took the offending shirts off shelves and tweeted an apology to the fans.
I personally think that the fans overreacted. The shirt was meant to be lighthearted and laughing with Taylor, not at her. Swift doesn’t seem to mind much because she is continuing to sell out venue after venue and her album has gone quadruple platinum. I think this incident really goes to show the power of social media to affect change. All it took was enough complaints and unhappy posts from her fans and the store pulled the shirts.

Country artists were not the only ones angered by the recent cover of Rolling Stone featuring the Boston Marathon bomber, but they took to social media to make their opinions known. Country artists like Brad Paisley, Chuck Wicks and Big and Rich all took to twitter to voice their concerns. They all agreed that the cover not only was “in poor taste” as Paisley tweeted, but it was also making a mockery of Rolling Stone Magazine. John Rich of Big and Rich tweeted “You always think as an artist “If I ever get on the Rolling Stone I’ll know I’ve made it!” That was until they started promoting terrorists.” This statement reflects the thought that Rolling Stone is making a mockery of all of the people who worked so hard to be on the cover and legitimately earned that.
The country music community has never been shy about voicing their opinions or making statements when it comes to national matters of safety. After 9/11, singer Toby Keith released “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue”, as an artistic patriotic response to what had happened. Instead of turning to song in this incident, artists chose to utilize social media to get their point across. Since the printing of the magazine several stores have also said that they will not run the magazine because of the cover.

The country duo that everyone is talking about right now is Florida Georgia Line. The release of their first single “Cruise” topped the country charts and was played non-stop last summer. Now this year they re-released the single with hip-hop artist Nelly after he approached the band about a possible collaboration. The song has had huge crossover success and launched the country act into a mainstream pop sensation as well. This is huge for country music, as it is becoming increasingly popular. While some listeners of pop music don’t believe it, and some country music traditionalists reject it, no one can deny that country and pop are becoming more and more intertwined.
The guys of FGL are still considered somewhat rookies despite all of their success so in this article the duo talks about how they are “taking notes” from some of their tourmates. They recognize that their popularity comes from a certain combination of hard work and good PR. From the standpoint of a PR professional, it makes perfect sense that they would look to other more veteran artists in their same kind of crossover genre for what to do. I predict that FGL is here to stay and that we will be seeing a lot more of them in the future.

Eric Church has been making a serious name for himself in country music recently. He has had several hit singles that have gained him quick and widespread popularity. In this article they talk about how he is creating his own brand of country music and I have to agree. His songs are a blend of traditional twang and rock music. He has had his share of controversial behavior, engaging in public rifts with Miranda Lambert, however that is what country music used to be. Right or wrong, the concept of country music came about with the idea of the country outlaw and that is what Church us trying to revive.
With country music becoming so scattered and fragmented, he has managed to find a way to stand out while simultaneously staying true to the roots of country music. From a PR standpoint, he would not be the most stable person to count on for reliable tweets; however, he has staying power and a unique sound that many other artists lack. There is a genuine quality about his music that draws fans to him and will continue to draw people to him and his music for a long while.

The watershed music festival is a new national country music festival to take place this year in Seattle. Aside from the CMA festival held annually in Nashville, this will be one of the largest music festivals in the nation. In order to boost the attendance and gain interest in the festival, the event planners and promoters booked Miranda Lambert and her husband Bake Shelton to kick off the festival. This was an extremely wise choice because they are two of country’s hottest artists right now. The pair married last year and since then have both had best selling albums and more than one hit single each. Shelton returned for season 4 of NBC’s The Voice to win his second season in a row with country singer Danielle Bradburry. Lambert has been on a whirlwind tour across the US and has released 3 hit singles and won female entertainer of the year at the ACM awards. They could not have picked better people to help start a new music festival.
In my opinion, shows like this are exactly what country music needs. It helps to unite the fans and it give people a chance to see multiple national acts for one price and in one weekend. Event promoter Brian O’Connell even said that “country music is a community” This festival is an attempt to bring country music back together in a time when crossover artists are fragmenting the genre.

Florida Georgia Line To Perform with Nelly On NBC’s ‘The Voice’ Finale

Florida Georgia Line To Perform with Nelly On NBC’s ‘The Voice’ Finale | Everything Country Music | Scoop.it
NBC’s hit show “The Voice” will air its season finale on June 18. A number of music’s biggest names are set to take the stage during the two-hour telecast. Among those include hot duo Florida Georgia Line.
Jennifer DeMarco's insight:

Everything about this event illustrates the fact that country music is becoming more and more widely accepted as a "Mianstream" genre of music. In collaborating with Nelly, the boys of Florida Georgia Line have gained access to a completely new and diverse fanbase. The Show NBC's the Voice, has also given the artists a platform to reach millions. Being one of the most popular shows on television, The Voice reaches an extremely wide audience. Having a high voter participation in the show also means that the watchers are active, meaning they are downloading songs, watching youtube videos, and using social media outlets to show their support.

Country music plays a big part in the show, from coach Blake Shelton, to guest coaches, to 3 of their top 5 Artists identifyed as "country". The show has opened up a platform and a venue for country artists to be braodcast nationally. They also gain numerous fans and can guage their populartity by the number of votes, viewers, and downloads. The unique voting fetured introduced thgouht the show was the option to cast your vote through a download. Season 4 winner Danielle Bradberry's version of "Maybe it Was Memphis" was one of The Voice's most popular downloads in the show's history. Country music is changing and the fans are becoming younger, more mainstream, and more tech savvy. I predict that country music will continue to grow in popularity with the younger mainstream audience.
