The Future U.S. Workforce Calls for More Technology Skills

The Future U.S. Workforce Calls for More Technology Skills | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
Workforce in the United States will be affected as a result of technological innovations, automation, robotics and artificial intelligence. Changes to the education system will be important to ensure students are adequately trained for labor and employment opportunities in the near future.
Joe Boutte's insight:

If we're not careful and spend too much time on cable news, we could forget that great thinkers continue to think deeply and differently about challenges, solutions, and strategies for shaping the future in positive ways.  I'm excited by some of the studies and thought pieces that consistently emerge in the midst and noise of our current national discourse.  In multiple and quiet, yet effective ways, everyday leaders stretch our minds to the possibilities of better futures, solutions, and conversations.  Here's one example from the Council on Foreign Relations where there is an abundance of thought leadership in an age of constant change. The work ahead starts everyday and yesterday.

Lunch Today –

Lunch Today – | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
When the world is trying to tell you something, you need to listen.    I was talking to our second grade students in the cafeteria about their behavior.  I told them that if their behavior improved, we could try to sit in different seats on a Friday during lunch. Students normally sit with their regular homeroom peers, but I explained that we would let them sit with any other friends that they chose to sit with.  One student was particularly excited by the idea.  “I can’t wait to pick who I sit next to!” I was glad that the kids were excited and hoped that it would lead to improved behavior in the cafeteria. I went on with my day without giving it any additional thought.    Later in the week, I saw that same student in the hall.  “Remember Mr. Czyz” he said, “that we can sit with whoever we want in the cafeteria if we are good!”  I asked him who he wanted to sit next to, and the answer surprised me.  “I’m going to sit next to you, Mr. Czyz. I can’t wait!”    Flash forward to this morning, and I was listening to Matt Miller on the DITCH That Textbook podcast. He was talking about the positive outcomes that could happen when we take the time to sit and eat lunch with students. (To listen the episode, click here.)  I can understand when the world is trying to tell me something.  So I guess we all know where I’ll be eating lunch today. I’ll let you know how it goes.    Rich (@RACzyz)

US Unveils The World's Fastest Supercomputer - 200 PetaFLOPS - Summit

June 8th, 2018 After five years of being second place to China the US has finally unveiled a supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennesse
Joe Boutte's insight:

Big day for US ingenuity, technology, research, and development.

Excerpts:

Call it the most powerful scientific tool ever built. Call it a new paradigm of computing. Just don’t call it slow, because whatever number you look at, Summit — which made its debut Friday at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory — is flat-out fast.

This massive machine, powered by 27,648 of our Volta Tensor Core GPUs, can perform more than three exaops, or 3 billion billion calculations per second. That’s more than 100 times faster than Titan, previously the fastest U.S. supercomputer, completed just five years ago. And 95 percent of that computing power comes from GPUs.

Built for the U.S. Department of Energy, this is a machine designed to tackle the grand challenges of our time. It will accelerate the work of the world’s best scientists in high-energy physics, materials discovery, healthcare and more, with the ability to crank out 200 petaflops of computing power to high-precision scientific simulations.

Summit is as big as two tennis courts and has 9,216 processors boosted with 27,648 graphics chips. The system and its twin at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California were funded in 2014 as part of a $325 million Department of Energy program called Coral, but Summit took years to develop

What's Summit good for? At Oak Ridge, it'll be scientific research into subjects like designing chemical formula, exploring new materials, studying links between cancer and genes on a very large scale, investigating fusion energy, researching the universe through astrophysics and simulating the earth's changing climate.

Lawrence Livermore, a lab funded chiefly by DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration, has a more militaristic mission, including stockpiling stewardship research to ensure nuclear weapons reliability.

Putting talent at the top of the CEO agenda

Putting talent at the top of the CEO agenda | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
One of the questions I ask, particularly CEOs, is, “If there are three things that you could teach your younger self, what would they be?” What I’ve found consistently across countries and sectors is that CEOs say, “I would have spent more time on people. I would have removed people faster. I would have pulled people up faster. And I would have spent more time with people.” It was consistent. The most scarce resource is talent. We are awash in capital. It’s talent that you need to drive it.

Firms wrestle with IT leadership gaps, 'mercenary' job seekers | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
Organizations are struggling to fill critical IT, analytics and security jobs, especially in the advanced skills and management ranks. The job is made harder by job seekers that only want consultant roles.
Joe Boutte's insight:

Opportunities to lead will continue to grow as technologies become more disruptive to normal recruiting.  As artificial intelligence (AI) and automation become more prevalent, organizations need leaders to provide vision, objectives, and measurable outcomes.  AI can accelerate work, but only leaders can influence the quality of the work and the desired outputs, services, and products.
