A sociology of the cinema

A sociology of the cinema | moviegoing | Scoop.it

One of the very first scholarly theses to be written about the cinema, Emilie Altenloh’s Zur Soziologie des Kino: Die Kino-Unternehmung und die Sozialen Schichten Ihrer Besucher (A Sociology of the Cinema) (1914) has proven to be of lasting worth. Altenloh’s study of the habits of cinemagoers in Mannheim, Germany has greatly grown in reputation in recent years, partly because her interest in the social drivers behind the popularity of cinema anticipate modern interests and concerns, and partly because of the increase in studies of cinema as social space generally.

Can I Go To The Movie Theater And Buy The Tickets There Then Go ...

"I have never been to the Movie theater, so i don’t know a lot. So in short, go to movie on the day of the movie, buy the tickets at the booth, then go straight in to watch the movie I just bought the tickets for."

Jesse of JBM's movie going mind trip | Friends with Benefits | Impose Magazine | moviegoing | Scoop.it

"I enjoy going to the movies alone. As an escape from myself and from communication, and from the expectation of my communicating with others. There is a simple freedom that I find, being disconnected from my life for a few hours, still and alone in a comfortable, dark space. Similar, to me, can be the experience of sitting on an airplane, where I sometimes find peace in knowing that there is nothing more that I can do than to just sit still."

Utah theater chain turns 'The Hunger Games' into an event - Los Angeles Times

Utah theater chain turns 'The Hunger Games' into an event - Los Angeles Times | moviegoing | Scoop.it
But those who showed up at the Megaplex Theatre in Sandy, Utah, for the first screenings were able to participate in their own (nonlethal) version of the cinematic teen death match, donning sumo wrestling suits, picking up laser guns and jousting with inflatable swords. Before battling strangers and friends, patrons could visit Cinna's Salon and have their eyes decorated with glitter — just like the film's heroine, Katniss, gets dolled up by a stylist named Cinna before she's thrown into the arena. The winner took home a backpack and lunch box donated to the theater by the studio, Lionsgate.

"The sites, from art deco palaces to modern-day megaplexes, are only half the story, as none of them would have existed without the spirit of human endeavour. The exhibit will also pay tribute to the showmen, exhibitors, stage-hands, musicians, projectionists and patrons who injected a breath of life into the flickering images."

Movie Theatres, Memories, Milwaukee « Midwest Editorial Photo ... | moviegoing | Scoop.it
It was a beautiful theatre and had a “cosmic jellybean” up above the screen – a large back-lit cut-out above the screen that brought a low-level illumination to the room before the movie started. This was a GREAT movie experience – - a gigantic screen, beautiful interior, and truly classic films shown.

Movie Theater Concessions - Smuggle or Sue?

"I understand that bringing outside food into a movie is wrong in a letter-of-the-law sense. It’s in direct violation of the rules for the business you are entering and not paying for food can be a direct cause to bigger ticket prices down the line. Also, I’m all for theaters kicking you out if you’re caught with your contraband Gummi Bears. Once again, bringing in food is in direct violation of their rules, so don’t cry when you get called out on it…although I wish theaters would focus more on kicking out disruptive audience members than outside-food-bringer-inners but that’s another post for another time."

Sensory Friendly Films offers a safe movie haven - NECN

"I think that right now the state of AR is really cheesy and cheap and full of crappy polygons and is a useless piece of crap and a waste of time. In the future, transparent displays with minimal information and very good design that relaxes you and makes you a superhuman in control of your own reality instead of overwhelm you or wait for things to load are going to be important. (...) "Those people don't typically go to movies because they don't want to get looked at funny when their kids need to get up and move around or make noises," she said. "It was about giving these people an opportunity to go to movies and not be judged."
