Webinar – "Integrating climate change policies into sustainable development strategy using the Sustainomics framework" – SEA Change CoP, 6 Nov. 2012

Webinar – "Integrating climate change policies into sustainable development strategy using the Sustainomics framework" – SEA Change CoP, 6 Nov. 2012 | Events and Meetings Addressing Social Development | Scoop.it

This webinar will introduce a comprehensive framework to practically address two major global challenges – sustainable development and climate change. The most effective approach is to integrate climate change policies into national sustainable development strategy, using the sustainomics framework. Development problems like poverty are already formidable. Climate change is the ultimate risk multiplier, worsening the other crises. Its worst impacts fall on the poor who are least responsible for the problem, and reducing their vulnerability to such impacts is critical.

ECOSUD 2013 – 9th Int. Conference on Ecosystems and Sustainable Development, Bucharest Romania, 18-20 Jun 2013

ECOSUD 2013 – 9th Int. Conference on Ecosystems and Sustainable Development, Bucharest Romania, 18-20 Jun 2013 | Events and Meetings Addressing Social Development | Scoop.it

In light of the rapid changes in large-scale human and biophysical processes - carbon emissions, population increase and migrations, overharvesting and pollution leading to a loss in biodiversity - scientists are worried that many of the socio-ecological systems existing today may collapse by the end of the 21st century. Previous efforts to impose simple solutions to these complex problems have frequently led to worse outcomes than the problems initially addressed.

These issues require a strong interdisciplinary science encompassing complex, multilevel systems that will enable, over time, a coherent approach. The forum will be a platform for various stakeholders working on ecological systems and sustainable development with a focus on integrating thermodynamics, ecology and economics into a new science called 'ecodynamics'.

2nd Oecumene Symposium on Citizenship after Orientalism, London UK, 12–13 Nov. 2012 | Events and Meetings Addressing Social Development | Scoop.it

The possibility of conceiving practices of citizenship after orientalism points to experiments that uncover, rearticulate and provoke subjugated forms of politics. This event addresses the intersections between orientalism, colonialism and citizenship, explores possibilities of democratic politics for decolonizing citizenship, and examines troubling universal claims to rights. The Symposium hosts ask what images of citizenship are emerging in relation to the process of deorientalization. The perspective adopted here considers if it is this experimentation itself, rather than its outcomes, that constitutes 'citizenship after orientalism' as a field of investigation.

EISCO 2012 – this year's EISCO Conference, Guimarães Portugal, 12–14 Nov. 2012 | Events and Meetings Addressing Social Development | Scoop.it

The EISCO conference started in 1998, and they have become notable events for politicians and experts, working at local and regional levels, to discuss eGovernment and Information Society strategies. EISCO is seen by some as a European milestone in eGovernment because the programme has addressed real issues being tackled at local and regional levels, which have not necessarily coincided with the priorities set-up by the European programmes. The conference showcase has provided a fairly comprehensive vision of the state-of-the-art in eGovernment developments in the public sector, combining local and regional good practices with national and European good practices.

With the launching, through EISCO, of the Digital Local Agenda process in 2005 (Declaration of Kracow), a unique and strategic framework was built influencing national, regional and local policies on the implementation of eGovernment. This is now being supported through the CIP/PSP (Policy Support Programme) that has approved two projects aiming at capacity building using the DLA. Presently the principle objective of the EISCO conference is to support the advancement of the Digital Local Agenda and its main priorities.
