The European Sting's insight:
It is indisputable that we are running a very important period regarding the trade relations between China and the EU. On the one hand, it is only today that the Commission’s online public consultation on future measures to prevent dumped imports from China is closing; a consultation which had earlier opened on 10 February. The EU is conducting this public dialogue to decide whether it will grant to China the Market Economy Status (MES) by the end of this year.

The European Sting's insight:

On 27 April 2015, in relation to the efforts to stem the refugee and immigrant flows to Europe, this newspaper predicted that “Turkey won’t cooperate”. Last Monday this prediction was not only confirmed but the European Union quasi accepted, that so far Turkey has done enough. The relevant passage of the Press release issued by the EU Commission after last Monday’s meeting, in the context of “High-Level Political Dialogue between the EU and Turkey in Ankara”, confirmed that “Turkey exerts outstanding efforts so far to accommodate the more than two and a half million Syrians currently in Turkey”.

How dearly will Germany pay for the Volkswagen emissions rigging scandal – The European Sting - Critical News & Insights on European Politics, Economy, Foreign Affairs, Business & Technology - euro... | EU Affairs: Critical Analysis & News | Scoop.it
The European Sting's insight:

The Volkswagen emissions scam exposed by the US authorities last week has more substance than the vast and varied financial, commercial and legal consequences wherever in the world the company is present. VW has a great weight in the German car universe with its 12 brand names (VW, Audi, Porsche, the Volkswagen trucks Scania and MAN, Skoda, Seat, etc). It’s also a fact that the automotive industry has a tremendous importance in the German economy. One in every seven jobs depends directly or indirectly on it.

The European Sting's insight:

The very next day that the Greek government signed a three year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a new stability support program of €86 billion with the European Commission, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras triggered an early legislative election. To do this he had to resign and according to the constitution, the President of the Republic has to separately and successively mandate the second and the third largest parliamentary party to form a new government. Quite predictably this will prove impossible and the country will have to hold a general election on 20 or 27 September.

The European Sting's insight:
Last Saturday, 12 September, Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis made some remarks after the informal meeting of ECOFIN (the EU ministers of Finance Council) in Luxembourg. The main item on the agenda was about completing the European Monetary Union. EMU is the most important EU project after the introduction of the single euro currency. He said that Eurozone should set up “a national network of competitiveness authorities in Member States, with a mandate to follow both wage and non-cost competitiveness developments in Member States” and also “set up an Advisory Fiscal Board that would coordinate the work of National Fiscal Councils and also, as the Minister has outlined, the more effective use of the Macroeconomic Imbalances Procedure”.
