Google's trademark policy revision kickstarts "brandjacking" debate

Google's trademark policy revision kickstarts "brandjacking" debate | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
Last week, you may have received a message from trademark-policy-revision@google.com, informing you about an ads trademarks policy update. Even though this may look like the usual policy update that you quickly gloss over, it is, in fact, bad news for hotels.

Bad, bad news.

In the email, it’s stated that:

“Advertisers may use a trademark term in ad text if they are a reseller of, offer compatible components or parts for, or provide information about the goods and services related to the trademarked term.”

Translating from legalese, this appears to suggest that OTAs and metasearch engines will be soon able to freely “brandjack” (or, if we want to stick with a more acceptable term, “affiliate brand bid”) hotels on Google’s search network.

Video: Marriott's New Reservations System Could Be Its Secret Weapon in Direct Booking Wars – | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
Merging three different loyalty programs into one isn’t the only tricky technological feat that Marriott International has had to pull off following its $13.3 billion acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

A major part of that loyalty integration involved transferring all of Starwood’s hotels onto Marriott’s reservations system which, as some industry experts have pointed out, was more outdated than Starwood’s system.

Neue Wege gehen – Kundenkommunikation per WhatsApp

Neue Wege gehen – Kundenkommunikation per WhatsApp | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it

The metasearch model, part 2: The transition to meta-book | PhocusWire | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
Metasearch dates back to 1999, when both SideStep and FareChase launched as search engines that aggregated prices from other online sites.

The following years saw many additional entrants into the metasearch arena - some created with that specific purpose, such as Skyscanner (2001), Kayak (2004) and Wego and Trivago (both 2005), and others that have added price comparison to their existing offerings, most notably TripAdvisor and Google. (Yahoo purchased FareChase in 2004 and then shuttered it five years later, and Kayak acquired SideStep in 2007.)
