Google updates trademark-policy, allows OTAs to use hotel branding in ads

The ads trademarks policy update will take effect "over the next several months" and could lead to higher CPCs for branded campaigns.

Even though Google did not offer keyword-level protection in the past, hotels could submit infringement complaints, preventing resellers from using the hotel brand in the ad titles and text in the EU and EFTA regions.

Harnessing the power of Instagram has become a quest in the travel industry, where pretty pictures are staple sales tools.

On a moody August morning in British Columbia, two humpback whales swam beside the floating Great Bear Lodge, exciting guests who watched them feeding and lunging out of the water for fish.

Posted to Instagram, the video of the exuberant wildlife encounter went viral and the lodge’s following grew from 600 to nearly 50,000. Booking inquiries jumped 1,350 per cent that week.

Au XIXe siècle, la Royal Navy britannique régnait en maitre sur les océans. Cette domination a permis au Royaume-Uni d’étendre son empire colonial, mais surtout d’avoir la mainmise sur le commerce maritime. Ils avaient la plus grosse flotte, ils ont logiquement imposé leurs règles. Deux siècles plus tard, les navires ont été remplacés par des smartphones, enceintes connectées, plateformes sociales… Une « flotte » composée de milliards d’unités dont nous sommes maintenant dépendants et qui assurent aux GAFA une suprématie sur l’économie du XXIe siècle. As I’ve highlighted before, there’s a common misconception in our industry that brands are cheap and online travel agencies are expensive.

I’m not sure where this notion first developed. It may be possible that since some OTA commissions started off greater than 20% that this perception has simply lingered.
