Ethics in Sports Medicine

Ethics in Sports Medicine | Sport Ethics: Hutchison, M. | Scoop.it

Sport and medicine are both goal-directed activities. The aim of sport is victory, and the aim of medicine is health. Initially, it might seem as if the demands of sport are compatible with the demands of health. Seemingly, the best way for an athlete to win is by being healthy. Little reflection is required, though, to realize at times the most effective and efficient means to winning can be detrimental to one’s health - both in the short-term and in the long-term

Doctors have therefore often defended the view that health considerations place ethical limits upon the means that one may legitimately employ to compete in sports.

So what is the primary role of the Sports Doctor? Is it to promote and protect the athlete’s health and fitness? Or is it too maximise their athletic performance, however necessary, in order to accommodate the athletes, managerial, commercial and economic interests?
