Estimating densities of terrestrial wildlife using passive acoustic recordings: A pragmatic approach using paired human observations

The use of passive using acoustic monitoring is a rapidly growing field in terrestrial ecology, particularly in ornithology. Much recent work has focused on using recording technologies for large-scale occupancy monitoring, while local scale studies have focused on acoustic localization for density estimation. Density estimation offers numerous advantages for answering key conservation questions but may seem impractical to employ at national or continental scales using current acoustic localization techniques.

A decision tree for assessing the risks and benefits of publishing biodiversity data | Biodiversité | Scoop.it
Information on species abundances and distributions is essential for developing conservation policy and assessing change. Yet publically available data increases exploitation potential. This Perspective presents a decision framework to assess the risks and benefits of publically sharing biodiversity data.

Spatial variation in determinants of agricultural land abandonment in Europe - ScienceDirect

Spatial variation in determinants of agricultural land abandonment in Europe - ScienceDirect | Biodiversité | Scoop.it
Agricultural abandonment is widespread and growing in many regions worldwide, often because of agricultural intensification on productive lands, conservation policies, or the spatial decoupling of agricultural production from consumption. Abandonment has major environmental and social impacts, which differ starkly depending on the geographical context, as does its potential to serve as a land reservoir for recultivation.

Freshwater ecoacoustics as a tool for continuous ecosystem monitoring - Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment

Passive acoustic monitoring is gaining popularity in ecology as a practical and non‐invasive approach to surveying ecosystems. This technique is increasingly being used to monitor terrestrial systems, particularly bird populations, given that it can help to track temporal dynamics of populations and ecosystem health without the need for expensive resampling.

How much do we know about the life history of the world's vertebrates? Dr. Dalia Conde from Species360 has an answer - Department of Zoology

We are currently experiencing an exciting moment in conservation, according to Dr. Dalia Conde, Director of Science at Species360 and Associate Professor of the University of Southern Denmark. In her seminar lecture entitled “Mapping Information Gaps: Towards an Index of Knowledge for Every Vertebrate Species”, Dr. Conde described the unique opportunity that we currently have to capitalize on machine learning technology and big data tools to create an interconnected and standardized knowledge system on the life history of the world’s biodiversity. Dr. Conde explained how, in her view, biodiversity data resembles the universe: it is ever expanding and becoming infinite thanks to mixed forms of data collection, from field based research and captive population studies, to citizen science, or genome coding. However, all the effort that we are putting into producing large quantities of data on species life histories can become futile if we are unable to transform basic data into interconnected knowledge that can be used for conservation decision making.

Worldwide Engagement for Digitizing Biocollections

Worldwide Engagement for Digitizing Biocollections | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

The digitization of biocollections is a critical task with direct implications for the global community who use the data for research and education. Recent innovations to involve citizen scientists in digitization increase awareness of the value of biodiversity specimens; advance science, technology, engineering, and math literacy; and build sustainability for digitization. In support of these activities, we launched the first global citizen-science event focused on the digitization of biodiversity specimens: Worldwide Engagement for Digitizing Biocollections (WeDigBio).

Identifying priority conservation areas for recovering large carnivores using citizen science data

Understanding the processes related to wildlife recoveries is not only essential in solving human - wildlife conflicts, but also for identifying priority conservation areas and in turn, for effective conservation planning. We used data from a large citizen science program to study the spatial processes related to the demographic and genetic recovery of brown bears in Greece and to identify new areas for their conservation. This was achieved by visually comparing our data with an estimation of the past distribution of brown bears in Greece and by using a Point Process Model to model habitat suitability, and then comparing our results with the current distribution of brown bear records and with that of protected areas.

Animal Recognition and Identification with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Automated Wildlife Monitoring

Efficient and reliable monitoring of wild animals in their natural habitats is essential to inform conservation and management decisions. Automatic covert cameras or "camera traps" are being an increasingly popular tool for wildlife monitoring due to their effectiveness and reliability in collecting data of wildlife unobtrusively, continuously and in large volume. However, processing such a large volume of images and videos captured from camera traps manually is extremely expensive, time-consuming and also monotonous. This presents a major obstacle to scientists and ecologists to monitor wildlife in an open environment.

Polar bears are starving, and this video reveals why

Polar bears are starving, and this video reveals why | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

Polar bears rely on sea ice to get their primary meal: seals. But as climate change melts this ice, the bears have to work harder to find prey, and that’s taking a toll on their health, researchers report today in Science. To find out how much the animals need to eat, scientists captured nine female polar bears living in the Beaufort Sea each spring for 3 years and took blood samples and other measurements to gauge the bears’ metabolisms. Then they attached GPS collars affixed with video cameras and accelerometers to watch the bears forage for food.
