The contribution of Earth observation technologies to the reporting obligations of the Habitats Directive and Natura 2000 network in a protected wetland [PeerJ] | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

Background Wetlands are highly productive systems that supply a host of ecosystem services and benefits. Nonetheless, wetlands have been drained and filled to provide sites for building houses and roads and for establishing farmland, with an estimated worldwide loss of 64–71% of wetland systems since 1900. In Europe, the Natura 2000 network is the cornerstone of current conservation strategies. Every six years, Member States must report on implementation of the European Habitats Directive. The present study aims to illustrate how Earth observation (EO) technologies can contribute to the reporting obligations of the Habitats Directive and Natura 2000 network in relation to wetland ecosystems.

 Le Parc naturel régional du Vercors organise jeudi 16 novembre une réunion dans le cadre de son projet escalade/biodiversité.

Objectif : permettre aux grimpeurs d’accéder aux falaises du parc et de les équiper, tout en protégeant les espèces installées sur son territoire et qui pourraient être dérangées par une présence humaine à proximité de leur habitat.

Animal Recognition and Identification with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Automated Wildlife Monitoring

Efficient and reliable monitoring of wild animals in their natural habitats is essential to inform conservation and management decisions. Automatic covert cameras or "camera traps" are being an increasingly popular tool for wildlife monitoring due to their effectiveness and reliability in collecting data of wildlife unobtrusively, continuously and in large volume. However, processing such a large volume of images and videos captured from camera traps manually is extremely expensive, time-consuming and also monotonous. This presents a major obstacle to scientists and ecologists to monitor wildlife in an open environment.
