Eurosceptic parties have been popular in the recent European elections, many complaining that the euro has only served Germany's interests. This column points out that although data on aggregate trade flows show that Germany's trade surplus with the rest of the Eurozone is not excessive, the success of a Eurosceptic party is larger in countries where the bilateral trade deficit with Germany has increased in recent years. A gradual rebalancing of Germany's external accounts of Germany would bring with it not only a greater economic stability in the Eurozone but also greater political stability.

Campaign rhetoric had it that the proclamation of “Spitzenkandidaten”, front-runners for the position of President of the European Commission, would end the hitherto opaque process of selecting the EU’s top executive post. In light of the results, however, the scenario for the next weeks appears like another metamorphosis of bargaining EU-style, the outcome of which will likely be crushing the expectations that the campaign created.

The results are in and the consensus view on last week’s elections to the European Parliament is that a rising tide of Euroscepticism washed across Europe. But among thehysteria that has accompanied the post-mortem of the election there are some more sober assessments that have pointed out the supposed electoral “earthquake” really only shook the ground in Denmark, France and the UK. Elsewhere, the performance of Eurosceptic parties was variable with some losing and others gaining a few percentage points of support compared to the last European Parliament elections in 2009.
