A new paper looks at how much climate change may cost the US health care system.

 

Climate change-related disasters caused $14 billion in health costs in first decade of the 2000s, according to a new paper published this week in the journal Health Affairs. The paper looks at six case studies of weather events in the US, all of the type predicted to increase or grow more severe as climate change progresses, like hurricanes, floods, and heat waves.

The Union of Concerned Scientists is questioning whether the building housing the Davis-Besse nuclear reactor was properly designed and remains structurally sound.
The challenge comes about three weeks after contractors cutting a hole in the building to replace the reactor's lid noticed a long hairline crack on one side of the opening.

A nuclear accident may raise the cost of atomic power generation by as much as 1.6 yen per kilowatt hour, a Japanese government panel said, casting doubt on whether it’s a cheap source of electricity.

 

“If the risk cost of a nuclear accident is included in calculations of atomic power generation costs, it is necessary to make a comparison in the same manner after estimating the accident costs of other power sources,” the panel said.


The assumed 5 trillion yen cost of a severe nuclear disaster should be revised as the liability from the Fukushima accident may increase, according to the panel’s report.

 

The utility known as Tepco may have to pay 4.5 trillion yen in compensation to those affected by the disaster by March 2013
