Ralph Lauren - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | Entrepreneurs in Fashion | Scoop.it

Ralph Lauren was born on October 14, 1939 in the Bronx, New York. His original name was Ralph Lifshitz but he later changed it to Lauren because people bothered him so much about it. His parents were Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants, from Pinsk, Belarus. Their names were Fraydl (née Kotlar) and Frank Lifshitz, a house painter. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1957. He attended Baruch College where he studied business and then later dropped out after two years. He then went into the Army. He never attended fashion school but worked for Brooks Brothers as a salesman. In 1967, at the age of 28, with the financial backing of Manhattan clothing manufacturer Norman Hilton, Lauren opened a necktie store where he also sold ties of his own design, under the label "Polo." He later received the rights to use the trademark Polo from Brooks Brothers. In 1964 he married Ricky Anne Low-Beer and later had three children.

Although the economy has been on the downfall, both DVF and Ralph Lauren have managed to keep their businesses thriving. They have similar business methods because they both depend upon confidence. Diane states that it is more important than ever to have confidence. According to Ralph Lauren president and chief operating officer Roger Farah, they have not slowed down one bit. He has continued to invest while others groan under the weight of loans and borrowed money. As you can see, their business strategies are very similar. They are not afraid to take risks and they learn from their mistakes. They both have experienced trials and hard times on their journeys to becoming successful, and that is what has made them who they are today. They both come from diverse backgrounds; neither designer’s parents were born in the U.S. That is one of the reasons, I believe that they are so popular around the world and understand what each a customer wants. Both designers are hard working, imaginative, and business savvy.
