Can a New Approach to Information Literacy Reduce Digital Polarization? | EdSurge News

Can a New Approach to Information Literacy Reduce Digital Polarization? | EdSurge News | Ensino, Aprendizagem & Tecnologia | Scoop.it

The internet doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but it should—to give users the skills to separate truth from falsehood so they can distinguish between propaganda and the indisputable and confirmable. And colleges should be the place leading students through this reference book.

That’s the argument of Michael Caulfield, director of blended and networked learning at Washington State University Vancouver, and it isn’t just some “hot take” designed to be provocative. He actually wrote the manual. And he has already convinced more than a dozen colleges to adopt it (and more than 100 college libraries to prominently link to it). Recently, he’s started research in an effort to prove that it works (and can help preserve American democracy).

Caulfield’s instruction manual—called Web Literacy for Student Fact-Checkers—explains how to avoid ending up down in these infotraps. It describes what it terms Four Moves and a Habit for evaluating any online article by going upstream to track claims or quotes to their original sources. The actual site of the Washington football team had no mention of this monumental mascot change, so I could have disproven the article in a couple of seconds.

Edtech initiatives that reduce teachers to the role of facilitator often overlook the important role the teacher plays in activating rich learning experiences for students. If we want technology to finally transform education and teach the 21st century skills our students need to succeed, we need to design tools with the understanding that teachers are activators of learning and the secret to achieving better student outcomes.

[PDF] Digital Transformation in Higher Education

[PDF] Digital Transformation in Higher Education | Ensino, Aprendizagem & Tecnologia | Scoop.it
It’s said that we are in the “fourth industrial revolution,”4 and
the forces of digital disruption have deeply affected
businesses of every size and in every industry. Those forces
are affecting the higher education industry like every other,
but there are also prevailing winds unique to colleges and universities that are causing profound disruption. There are several major trends - demographic, technological, and cultural - that are creating challenges and opportunities for higher education leaders and driving technological change at nearly all institutions.

One key differentiator from most industries is that its most visible and prestigious members are non-profits; for these institutions, their competitive threats do not usually culminate in obsolescence, decreased revenue or new entrants to the market, but rather constitute a battle to attract the most talented students who want personalized communications from the university throughout their life cycle from applicant to student to alumnus. In addition, these students are the most digitally savvy consumers on earth, and expect the higher education product they purchase to have the same amount of constant availability and convenience as all other aspects of their lives. Their demand for always-on, always-connected services is changing the educational market and driving demand for new experiences in the most important investment of their lives to date.

According to the National Center of Education Statistics, there are over 4,600 degree-granting institutions in the United States as of 2015, and they each are under pressure to attract students, produce scholarly output, and raise funds for their operations. While the competitive forces at work in higher education do not have quite the same effects as those affecting other industries, these global trends are still driving change and modernization, and creating challenges and opportunities for which universities are seeking solutions.

Miguel Zapata-Ros's curator insight, December 24, 2017 2:19 AM

The digital adds another not-at-all-discrete meta-level layer. The tools we use for learning, the ones that have become so ubiquitous, each influence what, where, and how we learn—and, even more, how we think about learning. Books. Pixels. Trackpads. Keyboards. E-books. Databases. Digital archives. Learning management systems. New platforms and interfaces are developed every week, popping up like daisies (or wildfires). None of these tools have what we value most about education coded into them in advance.

Sir Ken Robinson’s Next Act: You Are the System and You Can Change Education | EdSurge News | Ensino, Aprendizagem & Tecnologia | Scoop.it
Sir Ken Robinson’s views on creativity are abundantly well documented. In his 2006 TED Talk—still the most-watched of all time—he claimed that “we are educating people out of their creative capacities” and charged the current education system with being too rigid in adhering to traditional academic subjects. Kids, he argued, need time to dance, draw, create and find what they’re good at.

But he hasn’t given up on schools or education—far from it, in fact. For his follow-up act, Robinson is releasing a new book for parents on how to raise capable children who thrive in school. Make no mistake, though, he’s still shaking up the system (and redefining what that actually means).

In a wide-ranging interview, Robinson recently spoke with us about collaboration versus competition, the all-important parent-teacher relationship and what every parent and educator can do to improve education.

7 Digital Learning Theories and Models You Should Know :: Shelley Terrell | Ensino, Aprendizagem & Tecnologia | Scoop.it

While pursuing our teaching degrees we were introduced to various learning theorists and their insights about how people learn best. Some familiar names, included Piaget, Bandura, Vygotsky, and Gardner. Although understanding these theories is still important, we also need to become familiar with theories, models, and approaches, which provide us insight on how technology, social media, and the Internet impact our learning. Digital learning theories and approaches, such as RAT, SAMR, TPACK, Digital Blooms, Connectivism, Design Thinking and Peeragogy, help teachers develop curricula that gets students to use technology to research, curate, annotate, create, innovate, problem-solve, collaborate, campaign, reform and think critically. These are skills I outline in my book, Hacking Digital Learning Strategies with EdTech Missions. Digital learning approaches consider what students are currently doing online and help us design curricula to help students gain the digital skills they need to thrive in a digitally connected world. Below are some useful links to discover more about these approaches. Another approach you might be interested is Game Design and Gamification. We are currently learning about digital learning models and approaches in the free Goal-Minded Teacher (#EduGoalsMOOC) online course, which you can still join."

Students want Laptops, flexible digital tools in the classroom | Ensino, Aprendizagem & Tecnologia | Scoop.it

As digital tools continue to infiltrate college campuses, students and educators alike should rejoice. McGraw-Hill Education’s 2017 Digital Study Trends Survey found that 60 percent of students indicated digital learning tools have at least slightly improved their grades and have been very or extremely helpful in their academic life.

Overall, the students said that laptops — over things such as print materials and smartphones — are the devices they are most likely to use in class, for homework and for exam prep. A whopping 86 percent labeled laptops as an important tool for studying while only 33 percent said the same about smartphones and tablets.
