Will I be able to do more work with three screens? How has the age of computers changed your life? How would it have been different if they had been around earlier?

Will I be able to do more work with three screens? How has the age of computers changed your life? How would it have been different if they had been around earlier? | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Having more screen space makes people more productive, but it’s not necessarily best distributed over multiple monitors
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I use two screens. I'm not sure that I have the space for a third, but given how useful having two can be I'd sure love to try. Just a simple example, I'm working on a writing project and need to look up a factoid, just to be sure about it before including. Quick click on second screen, where my browser is at the ready. Type in the keyword and my search engine finds me what I need. Sure I could do it all on that one screen, but let me assure you, this method is a lot faster. And, when I'm writing commentaries like this to help get people aware of me, I have a sheet of possible links I might want to use on that second screen. For example, want to go to my Amazon page? Quick copy and paste right here for you.

Now, the fun fact of the morning for me. Go back thirty years ago and I barely knew how to turn a computer on. Of course, there wasn't much reason to know how since all these wonderful sites weren't there. I did own a word processor, well actually more of a new-fangled typewriter that actually had a bit of memory. I used it to write some of those first poems and essays. Boy, have things changed? I wonder if personal computers had been available when I was young how it would have changed my life. For one thing, it would have been a lot easier for me to start writing because I could have read what I had written. One reason I went into a profession rather than starting out as an author, it was too darn much work to try to write in pencil and then transcribe my own indecipherable words.

If your old enough to remember a computer-less world, how would having computers have changed your life story?

The Death and Life of the American Shopping Mall

The Death and Life of the American Shopping Mall | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
There are still about 1,100 malls in the U.S. today, but a quarter of them are at risk of closing over the next five years.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
During my life, the mall has gone from fabulous lifestyle innovation to dying remnant of what we used to do. Only a few malls are finding success. One reason for today's unhealthy state of malls in America is the American obsession with the bottom line. It pushes the mall owner to squeeze every dollar they can from each square foot of space rather than thinking how can we get a combination of functions that will guarantee attracting people. Malls require synergy and that means integrating functions including education, life-style, and fun with shopping. It includes providing gathering experiences as well as catering to the shopper. It includes encouraging new ideas not just sticking with what's currently working. On the other hand, I for one won't really miss malls, which I seldom visit except that my best source of bagels happens to be in one. What about you: mall lover or hater? What's your feeling about this now-disappaering phenomenon?

10 Cocaine and other Drug Products of the Past (Cocaine Products, Old drug products) - ODDEE | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Cocaine, morphine, and even heroin were seen as miracle cures when they were first discovered.
Substances prohibited today were legally available in the past, so until the late 1800, manufacturers proudly proclaimed that their products contained such drugs. Today we present you ten of this incredible old ads. (Cocaine Products, Old drug products)
Kenneth Weene's insight:
As a kid, I was given paregoric as cough medicine. I don't remember if it helped my coughing, but it sure made me feel better. 92 proof with an opium kicker. Funny thing, I didn't grow up an addict or a drunk, but I still cough a lot—a little thing called allergies.

Kids consume 12% of their calories from fast food, study shows

Kids consume 12% of their calories from fast food, study shows | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Kids now consume 12% of their calories at fast food restaurants, a trend that may contribute to rising rates of childhood obesity.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When I read this one question kept popping through my head. Why do people think this stuff tastes good? Too much salt, too much sugar, too much fat; I prefer a good salad and fruit; burgers not so much. Have we as a nation taught ourselves to love the wrong tastes? Of course, I'll still go for friend chicken (not from any of the chains) and love greasy tuna from Subway (on a sald not in a sub). Heck, nobody's perfect. So what are your healthy food choices and your guilty pleasures?

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love the idea of this. For my own part I prefer my very normal modern life complete with computer, cell phone, and all those modern conveniences, but there is a certain style. I suppose if forced, I could live in the jazz age, just stay drunk. So cheers to all these wonderful people.

Endangered Dog Breeds and the Market Forces Behind Them

Endangered Dog Breeds and the Market Forces Behind Them | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The reasons for dog breed extinction have changed over the millennia. In today's world of post-functional dog breeds, no breed is safe.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Because I love dogs, I thought I'd share this great article on dog history and breeds. In my life I've owned both purebred and mixed breed dogs. While I loved my Airedales and Cardigan Welsh Corgis, the ruler of the house was our poodle-terrier mix straight from the shelter. Some big rules: Be sure you are ready for the work of owning a dog. Be sure the characteristics of the dog are consistent with your lifestyle. Be sure you are prepared to deal with a dog's long-term life, not just the happy puppy days but the old, failing health days.

These Are the Happiest Cities in the United States

These Are the Happiest Cities in the United States | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
National Geographic Explorer and best-selling author Dan Buettner searched for the happiest Americans. Where he found them will surprise you.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
What makes people happy? Of course it the full measure of their lives. Health, social connectedness, quality of environment, culture, work experience: the list goes on. It seems to me that each of us tries to find that combination that feels right to them. For me, for example, a big city with lots of variety and stimulation is more important than great natural beauty. Because of mobility issues, clearly accessibility is important. I love the arts, especially theatre and classical music, and good food. So add those into my mix.

Of course, those choices have changed over time. As a young person, I delighted in New England. You just have to read Broody New Englander to get that message. Later, it was The Big Apple with all its challenges and richness. Now, I love living in Arizona with its steady dry weather and decent and easily accessible amenities.

Now, what makes you happy? What do you look for in your environment? How happy where you are, which is where?

Does your happy place have a good library? Have you asked them to buy my books for their collection? How about doing that; it would be most kind.

Baseball is struggling to hook kids — and risks losing fans to other sports

Baseball is struggling to hook kids — and risks losing fans to other sports | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Youth participation in baseball has slid for two decades and its fans have aged as the accelerated pace of modern life clashes with the sport’s imbalance between anticipation and action.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Participation in organized athletics is falling, which is perhaps a sad commentary on the lifestyle of modern American kids. Computer games are not sufficient exercise for healthy growth. And those kids who are in sports see that as a career path, which means they are specializing far too early and losing the fullness of youth because of the expectations of coaches (and some parents) for "sports greatness." Meanwhile, at least soccer and lacrosse are growing.

Admitted he could not remember where they came from.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Who among us does not have a pile of old cables and the like? Actually, I have gotten rid of a lot of my collection, but not in the trash. Electronics related recycling is easily available at most stores that sell this stuff, and that is better for the environment and allows the materials to be reused. Don't forget those batteries as well.

When More Exercise Is Not Better

When More Exercise Is Not Better | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
The latest research shows there may be an upper limit to how helpful exercise can be on your heart
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Okay, I admit it: for me exercise is mostly going to the fridge for a snack. Sometimes I vary my routine and take a nap instead. Still, I feel vindicated by this piece. That nasty gym teacher in eighth grade would never agree that there are limits to healthy exercise. Well, he was wrong, there was a good reason to sit on the bench when my team was in the outfield.

Seriously, living well means living in moderation.
