Small business advice: Seven traits to adopt in the year of the dog

Small business advice: Seven traits to adopt in the year of the dog | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Having a ruff time in your business? Take a cue from the Chinese zodiac. Seriously.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I would never be so foolish as to ignore the advice of a dog, especially not this year. So, let's just say, "Gung Hay Fat Choy!." Happy Lunar New Year. For the rest, well read the article. For just plain good fun, try reading Sweet and Sour, a Kindle Book of short stories. Here's the trailer:

Kansas dog with 'anti-squirrel agenda' cannot run for state's governor, officials say

Kansas dog with 'anti-squirrel agenda' cannot run for state's governor, officials say | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
A dog can be man's best friend -- but not its governor, the Kansas secretary of state’s office said.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Given most of our politicians, I wouldn't mind seeing some good dogs and even cats get involved in running things. Certainly, this Wirehaired Vizsla looks more intelligence than a lot of the candidates out there.

Did you notice that the Sect. of State whose office quashed Angus's run is himself running for the job. Is that squirrelly or not?

Meanwhile whose endorsement could mean more than Angus's owner: "I do believe that he is a caring, nurturing individual who cares about the best for humanity and all creatures -- other than squirrels."

Corgis saved by The Crown: Queen's favourite dog taken off 'at risk' list after boost from Netflix show

Corgis saved by The Crown: Queen's favourite dog taken off 'at risk' list after boost from Netflix show | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
They have long been regarded as a breed for the elderly and the genteel upper middle class, chief among them the Queen.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Okay, they aren't Cardis, but they are corgis and that's enough to get my vote. I still miss my little dog, Champion Aragon Silver Streak. Streaker won me before she was weaned, and we soon went back to make her a Weene. I even had the pleasure of escorting her into the ring at Westminster. But, Streaker didn't like the show circuit, much preferring lying in sunbeams and playing—ever so gently—with her toys. If ever there was a dog designed to live comfortably with her humans, it was Streaker.

As I say, these are Pembrokes, not Cardigans, so no tail and less thick hair and slightly different ears, but still winsome. Glad to hear that they are experiencing a comeback in the UK. Hopefully some of the other old breeds that have fallen off in numbers will as well.

Yes, I know that shelter dogs need homes and that breeding to standards has done much harm to many breeds of dogs. Still, the original development of breeds usually made sense. We've had both mixed-breed and pure and loved them all. Which really is the point. Dogs make life better even if you're a monarch. Hip, Hip, Hooray!

In a first, an Italian woman wins pay for time she took off to look after her ill dog.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I love this story and I'm sure everybody else who has ever loved a pet will, too. They may have four legs and paws, but they're still part of the family. I'm sure we all send warm thoughts to Chcciola; who can resist those eyes?

Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder Isn't Just For People

Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder Isn't Just For People | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Could understanding canine compulsions help find new treatments for people with OCD, too?
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If you have OCD or know somebody who does, this brave article might be useful. Even if you don't, it may give you insights into not only people who are suffering but also dogs (and other animals) that exhibit the same tortured behavioral rigidities. Whether it's medication, response prevention, or cognitive-behavioral therapy (distraction therapy for animals), there is help available, but there are limits—real limits—to what can be accomplished and most of the therapies take a lot of time.

Why do I call this a brave article? Because, the author shares so much of herself. That, by the way, is something we too seldom realize about "mental illness;" living with it requires bravery. Speaking of this, have you read Memoirs From the Asylum? You really should.

9 Amazing Things That Happen When Dog Owners Date Cat Owners

9 Amazing Things That Happen When Dog Owners Date Cat Owners | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
While studies claim that cat owners are smarter, studies also claim that dog owners are more social, active and caring. What happens when they start dating?
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is one of the cute, make the day brighter, pieces that we all enjoy reading. All, maybe not those who hate animals. Now, I'm a dog person. So is my wife. Nevertheless, cats seem to love me. Why not, I provide a soft, warm lap and a never fight with them over boxes or tuna. Have you ever dated across species preferences? What about icthyophiles (fish lovers)? Hmm a cat lover and a fish person. Now, that could be cold.

Are you a dog-owner? Research is showing that our dogs love us back and are much smarter than we usuallt give them credit for.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
The question for me has never been how smart are dogs but why they let us think we're smarter. Our one special dog, Uncle, ran the house. She made no pretenses about the pecking order. Here's a link to one of my pieces about her. Enjoy that and this article. https://annettesnyder.blogspot.com/2015/11/uncle-in-vermont-kenneth-weene.html

10 Behavioral Problems In Dogs and What You Can Do About Them

10 Behavioral Problems In Dogs and What You Can Do About Them | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Behavioral problems in dogs can cause serious problems. However, if we understand the causes behind the dog's peculiar behavior, we can easily deal with it.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I know you love your dog, so here's a few training tips. In my life, the best tip was letting my wife do the training. Not only were our dogs well-behaved, but she eventually got me properly housebroken as well. (To be honest, I still drool and beg, but we're trying.)

He Posts A 'Goodbye Letter' From His Dog. What It Says Is Quickly Going Viral!

He Posts A 'Goodbye Letter' From His Dog. What It Says Is Quickly Going Viral! | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

Yesterday was a weird day. I couldn’t get myself out of bed. The guy I live with lifted me up. I tried to get my legs under me, but they wouldn’t cooperate. He said, ‘Don’t worry, I gotcha buddy,’ carried me downstairs, and out the front door. That was so nice of him. I needed to pee so badly, I just had to go right there where he put me down. Normally I wouldn’t, but we both decided to make an exception to the rule..

Kenneth Weene's insight:

This had me in tears. It is a lovely tribute to the dogs who make our lives so much better.

Maggie Tails: Uncle in Vermont by Kenneth Weene

Maggie Tails: Uncle in Vermont by Kenneth Weene | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it

She loved traveling, delighting in hotels and particularly enjoying room service breakfasts: scrambled eggs not too firm or a cheddar omelet, a side of bacon, toast buttered and strawberry jam, hash browns with ketchup, and coffee—light and sweet. Uncle, our twelve-pound terrier-poodle mix, had little use for me, but she did appreciate my serving her hotel breakfast. Another thing about Uncle and hotels stays: that was the only time she would tolerate a leash. Yes, she did understand the rules that people imposed even if she knew they were stupid and surely didn’t apply to a dog who knew exactly where to go and what to do without being told.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Thanks from Uncle and myself to Maggie Adkins for sharing this post which I hope will tickle dog lovers everywhere.

Year of the Dog : Top 10 Dog-Friendliest U.S. Destinations

Year of the Dog : Top 10 Dog-Friendliest U.S. Destinations | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Vacation rental site HomeAway compiled a list of American cities and towns that are best suited for travel with your pet in 2018
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Those who knew me then, know that Roz and I always tried to take Uncle, Jennifer, and Streaker on vacation at least twice a year Usually, one of those trips was to Vermont, to the Kedron Valley Inn, where Jennifer loved to swim in the pond and Uncle loved to drink at the bar. (Yes, they served her and charged me.) Streaker, well, she just loved. Of course, back then taking four-legged members of the family to hotels and resorts was kind of different and often difficult. Many times we had to settle for a lesser place because the one we wanted wouldn't allow "animals." Not sure what they thought about the two-legged ones who were way worse drunks than Uncle to say nothing of people who kept jumping into the pool and splashing poor Streaker. (She loved to sunbathe.)

At any rate, our culture is changing. For my part, most of the dogs staying in a hotel are just fine. I do wish their humans were a bit faster on the pick-up, but hey you can't fault Fido for having to go. At any rate, this being the Year of the Dog, I wish all canine vacationers a great time.

With Westminster on the way, where to hang out with 135 dog breeds in New York City this weekend

With Westminster on the way, where to hang out with 135 dog breeds in New York City this weekend | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
If you’ve ever wanted to cuddle a corgi, nuzzle a Newfoundland or pet a pumi, Saturday’s the day.
That’s when the ninth annual Meet the Breeds
Kenneth Weene's insight:
If I were in New York today, I know I'd be down at the West 55th St. piers where I could get to pet dog after dog after dog. Yep, this is a lead-up to Westminster, the top dog show in the US. I know there are lots of mixed-breed dogs that deserve love and there is something a bit creepy about breeding dogs, kind of like eugenics. Still, I can't resist these lovely animals. Maybe it's a genetic thing between my Neanderthal forebears and their canine companions expressing itself in me, but I look at this mastiff and I just want to howl.

Anyway, pat your dog for me and remember our pets need care.

China's Gruesome Dog Meat Festival Canceled, Say Activists

China's Gruesome Dog Meat Festival Canceled, Say Activists | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
China's Yulin dog meat festival, where thousands of canines are bludgeoned to death and eaten on June 21, has been canceled, say activists.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I guess China is throwing the West a bone, but I doubt this means an end to eating dog and cat meat just the end of a fairly new Yulin city festival, one that was probably created by local authorities to generate some tourism. Still, it's a good thing. Now if they can come up with good spay and neuter policies and better rabies control, I might even given China a big woof. Of course, porcine folk might say the same if China banned ribs and bacons. Woof, woof, did I hear bacon? Got to go eat.

Judge rules pet dogs cannot be treated as children in Canada custody dispute

Judge rules pet dogs cannot be treated as children in Canada custody dispute | enjoy yourself | Scoop.it
Dogs are considered property and have ‘no familial rights’, judge said when rejecting separated couple’s application to sort out pets’ living arrangements
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Cruel justice to so miss the mark. Dogs are assuredly not just property but neither are they children. We tend to be far more attached to and protective of our pets, dogs, cats, birds,  horses, than we are of our offspring. And, to be fair, those animals often give us more in return. As for this couple in Canada, I suggest they get some serious counseling if only for the sake of these canine siblings.

The dogs are unique and adorable, but is all of this OK?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I love dogs and these breeds look delightful, but is it really good for animals to be bred into stereotypes? My corgi was a champion, my Airedale was just a delight, and my poodle terrier mix was a queen; the papers for two didn't make them better then the one. Nor did those papers make them healthier. Anyway, if you're a dog lover, you'll find this fascinating reading and great pictures.
