Natasha Rowland's insight:

iTaalk Austism Foundation aims at providing all children with autism the opportunity and access to  interactive devices, and thus the original vision for iTaalk was formed. After exploring the need in the community, it became apparent that the need was not only for the devices, but for the educational piece on how to use them as well.

Since January 1, 2011, The iTaalk Autism Foundation has educated over 3000 families, service providers and caretakers on the beneficial uses of interactive technology with children with Autism and varying other special needs.

The use of interactive devices will enable students learning to align with the aims of the Australian Curriculum: Technologies.

Technology Helps Teach Kids with Autism (UC Irvine) - YouTube

UC Irvine informatics assistant professor Gillian Hayes designs computer devices to aid instruction, record-keeping. Video courtesy of Information and Comput...
Natasha Rowland's insight:

Watch as professors and teacher's talk about the benefits of vSked, an interactive visual scheduling tool. This tool can be used for all students in the classroom but it's main purpose is to benefit students on the autism spectrum who thrive on visual aids and the use of a schedule.

Teachers speak on the breakthroughs they have had with teaching topics such as less and more, and geography. Students have access to the large monitor at the front of the classroom and smaller ones at their desks. This is highly beneficial as the students can follow along with the lesson and be highly engaged with the use of pictures, videos and sounds.

The Australian Curriculum: Technologies

The Australian Curriculum: Technologies | Enhancing the Learning Experience of Autistic Students Through Technology | Scoop.it
Natasha Rowland's insight:

The Australian Curriculum is currently implementing Technologies as a learning area.

The Australian Curriculum: Technologies describes two distinct but related subjects:

Design and Technologies, in which students use design thinking and technologies to generate and produce designed solutions for authentic needs and opportunities.Digital Technologies, in which students use computational thinking and information systems to define, design and implement digital solutions.

As teachers enable students to utilise technologies in their classroom lessons they will be meeting the aims of Technologies as a learning area. Technologies aims at allowing students to create, develop, analyse, manage, plan and design through technology whilst making informed and ethical designs about our future.

The Future Starts Now - 2012 edition - YouTube

The Norwegian Centre for ICT in Education (www.iktsenteret.no), The purpose of the Norwegian Centre for ICT in Education is to contribute to the realization ...
Natasha Rowland's insight:

This youtube video was created by a Norwegian student who has a passion for ICT inclusive classrooms. The part that really spoke to me was when she said that learning is in the hands of the teacher and that teachers need to include ICT in their lessons to encourage participation, success and new knowledge. Teachers need to be forever updating their knowledge of ICT's and how they can be implemented in the classroom.

The future starts know, what will you do.

The Australian Curriculum: Technologies aim at ensuring students:

investigate, design, plan, manage, create and evaluate solutions

are creative, innovative and enterprising when using traditional, contemporary and emerging technologies, and understand how technologies have developed over time

make informed and ethical decisions about the role, impact and use of technologies in the economy, environment and society for a sustainable future

engage confidently with and responsibly select and manipulate appropriate technologies − materials, data, systems, components, tools and equipment − when designing and creating solutions

critique, analyse and evaluate problems, needs or opportunities to identify and create solutions.

Through implementation of ICT's in the classroom these aims can be achieved.

Improving the quality of teaching and learning processes through ICT - Ecuador — IICD

Improving the quality of teaching and learning processes through ICT - Ecuador — IICD | Enhancing the Learning Experience of Autistic Students Through Technology | Scoop.it
Improving the quality of teaching and learning processes through ICT in 6 Millennium & 5 satellite schools nation-wide and 40 schools in Manabi.
Natasha Rowland's insight:

iicd is an amazing company that aims at providing technology to third world schools. The provide education to the teachers on how to utilise ICT's within their classroom. Their primary focus in Education is to improve teaching skills and materials. Through their projects, teachers learn to how find digital teaching materials on the web and how to create their own. They also learn to share materials and teaching methodologies via CD-ROM or the internet. ICT is also used to improve school management and administration, and strengthen youth employability.

Technology in schools is a wonderful resource that is greatly underused. Companies like this that aim at teaching the teachers the benefits of ICT will in turn provide students with richer learning experiences. I will strive to understand the many ways in which ICT can be used so when I have my own classroom I can better their learning especially for those students with ASD.
