Everyone thinks; it is our nature to do so. But much of our thinking, left to itself, is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed or down-right prejudiced. Yet the quality of our life and that of what we produce, make, or build depends precisely on the quality of our thought. Shoddy thinking is costly, both in money and in quality of life. Excellence in thought, however, must be systematically cultivated.

qualities of good TESOL teachers

1.attitude towards the profession

-effective Ts recognize that teaching is demanding

-their positive outlook leads to a healthier work envirnment

-pivotal quality

2.verbal ability

-highly effective teachers must be good communicators

-has a positive effect on student achievement (Darling Hammond, 2000; Haberman, 1995; Hanushek, 1971)

-needs to be reciprocal

3.professional/content knowledge

-teachers need two kinds of knowledge (Pasternak & Bailey, 2004)

-the right credentials and sound professional knowledge are of paramount importance

credentials/recognize the importance of PD/ IT/technology skills a must

-types of knowledge Ts must have

Shulman (1987) identified seven different kinds of knowledge that highly effective teachers must have:

-content/broad principles and strategies of classroom management and organization/curriculum materials and programs/teaching of particular content topics/students/educational contexts/educational aims and values

4. teaching experience

-influential in TE in areas like

-no real definition of how many years makes a teacher "experienced"

5.intercultural competence

-Ts need to be aware of their Ss' culture, their environment and cultures they bring to the classroom dynamic

-needs to be reciprocal

-success as a teacher does not depend on the approach or method you follow so much as on your integrity as a person and the relationships that you develop in the classroom (Byram, 1997)

6. lifelong learning

-current educational demands require that Ts be continuous, lifelong learners

-Ts can develop in various ways
