# Test your Brain! Puzzle - Logic . Intermediate. Focus : Relative clauses with "who"

If you manage to have your students try to solve this problem in pairs or trios, in ENglish of course, they will speak A LOT! ;)

Five women went shopping for groceries. Each one of them is wearing a different colour blouse and is accompanied by someone. Also, each lady forgot to buy an item.

Clues:

a. The one who forgot to buy bread is next to the one who is accompanied by her sister, on the left.

b. The one who is wearing blue is next to the one who is accompanied by her son, on the left.

c. The one who is accompanied by her husband will use a food voucher to pay.

d. The one at cashier 1 is accompanied by her boyfriend.

e. The one who paid by credit is at cashier 4.

f. The one at cashier 5 paid cash.

g. The one who is accompanied by her husband is next to the one who forgot to buy bread, on the left.

h. The one who paid by cheque is at cashier 1.

i. The one who paid by credit forgot to buy ham.

j. The one who forgot to buy milk paid cash.

k. The one who forgot to buy softener is either at cashier 1 or 5.

l. Fernanda is wearing white.

m. The one who is wearing green is next to the one wearing blue, on the left.

n. Aline is accompanied by her husband.

o. Carol is on Aline's right.

p. Natália is at cashier 5.

s. The one who is whearing red is accompanied by her son.

So... Can you solve the problem?

cashiers: 1,2,3,4,5.

Names: Fernanda, Natália, Aline, Carol and Juliana.

Items: Bread, ham, milk, softener and fruit.

Companies: husband, son, boyfriend, mother and sister.

Payment: Cash, credit, debit, voucher or cheque.

Blouse: yellow, blue, white, red, green.

This is actually an easy problem to solve. You can set a competition and give a prize to the group that finishes first.

Tip: Draw a table !

## Intermediate - What did you hear?

Aim: bare infinitive or gerund after verbs of sense.

Teacher asks students to close their eyes, and produces continuous sounds as walking or talking, then tells them to open their eyes and asks: "What did you hear?" to elicit or present , for instance, "I heard you walking round the room, " I heard you talking" . Then, Teacher repeats the process , but this time drops a book on the ground or opens the door, producing a single sound and asks again : "What did you hear?" This is to revise or present the contrast between, "I heard you walking round the room"  versus " I heard you drop the book". This activity can also be done with "see" ( ask the students to look out of the window or go to the school lounge and tell you what they saw.

Who are you in the picture?

A suggestion from Ben Goldstein's talk: The Power of Image - developing visual literacy in the classroom. Brought by Anna Young, a teacher at Bell International, Cambridge Campus.

1. Stds decide who they want to be in the picture. T reads out the following questions while stds look and think about their answers:

- How are you feeling?

- What has just happened to you?

- What regrets do you have?

- What are you going to do next?

- What are you looking forward to?

2. Stds then tell their partner their answers beginning with " I... "

3. The partners should guess which person in the picture they have decided "to be".

Questions can/should be adapted for different levels.

T might want to conduct a follow-up activity by comparing this picture with a parody picture. My favourite one is The Simpsons parody. ( check link below )

Stds would simply have to spot the differences and similarities, and comment on the humour effect of parodies. ( if it's an upper-int group or higher )

SG: I don’t think any technology is “the future” of education. The dilemma I had in writing the book is that it’s a dummy’s book, and if you’re familiar with the dummy series, it’s really a how-to series: ‘tap here,’ ‘use this.’ As far as possible I’ve tried to integrate education into the book and principles of education as much if not more than the technology itself. That’s really what it’s more about. I don’t see the future of education tied to a particular technology as much as I do see it tied to more of a philosophy of education that’s more student-centered, more experiential, discovery learning, less frontal content delivery. Any technology can be used in a multitude of ways, and I don’t think using technology to support the old frontal content delivery systems is a successful model. I don’t think it’s necessarily the future of education; it could be...."

## "Just a Minute " - Advanced - 30 minutes

Property of the BBC. New (TV) format. More fun than it sounds, along with Nicholas Parsons (OBE), Paul Merton, Sue Perkins, Graham Norton and Phill Jupitus.

Play "JUst a minute" with your advanced students! It fosters tons of speaking and great fun.

Precedure:

1 - A student is given a topic and s/he has to speak about it for 60 seconds, without hesitating, deviating or repeating words.

2 - If another student spots any of the above-mentioned cases, s/he "steals " the turn and takes over the topic.

3 - The students who is speaking during the 60th second scores 2 points.

## 4-letter words. Warmer. 5 - 10 minutes. Intermediate to advanced levels.

Procedure:

1 - Write a 4-letter word on the board. E.g "LOVE"

2 - Tell students it's the first word of a list.

3 - Tell them they will think of new 4-letter words to continue the list;

4 - They can only replace 1 letter to form a new word; they can't add or delete any letter.

Example: LOVE - LIVE - DIVE - DICE ...

Students play together as a class. You can establish a minimum number of words for a prize; 15 words for instance, so that it's challenging for them.

It's a great opportunity to test your students' range of words and foster a lot of speaking.

## Taking into the Cl@ssroom: environment issues

Have you had the opportunity to discuss environment issues with your students?

Since the global conference on environment Rio +20 is fast approaching, we have created this activity.

Material needed: Mobile phones

a) Students are going on a walk around the branch and they have to capture still photographic images of behaviors that are not environmentally friendly.

Tell them to have sharp eyes to spot problems. Their images should be focused and reflect behaviors that have a negative impact on the environment. Besides taking photos, students can capture their observations orally or textually on their mobile devices, making use of their mobile audio recorders or note apps.

b) Have students upload their photos onto Linoit (www.linoit.com) - (They can do that at home and teachers continue the activity next time they meet.)

c) Invite students to show their pictures and describe them. In pairs, have them discuss about possible solutions and bits of advice to revert those problems.

For advanced students teachers can take this activity further:

Ask students to write newspaper articles in which they address the importance of having a positive attitude towards the environment. These can be transformed into newspaper-like texts on Fodey (www.fodey.com) you can print them out and have them  posted on your classroom noticeboard.

Loved this idea of environmental issues with technology. I myself have done what my students called "photo safari" which was related to a lesson about happiness. They were to shoot pictures of things that made them happy and posted in a Facebook group. This led to a myriad of comments and students loved it! Next time I'll try this "environment" idea!

Some interesting points and useful tips here for teachers regarding recycling language and revisiting texts. Thornbury makes the observation that often in  texts books each unit covers a different topic which means that new language is being introduced and language from previous units is not being repeated or reviewed. This is where we as teachers can introduce other resouces that help bind all the topics and also use five minute activites to recapitulate on language that has already been introduced in order to revive it.

## Seek advice - Upper Intermediate - Adults - 30 min

This is an activity I really enjoy conducting in class. If foster loads of speaking and it's very engaging.

Language skills: Describing a problem, asking/giving adive, summarising.

Procedure:

1. Arrange your students in two groups. Make sure the groups have at least 6 students. If your class is small, put all learners together in a single group.

2. Each student get a piece of paper and briefly outlines a problem. It may be real or imagined but if it is as concrete as possible it makes the discussion closer to real life, of course. The shouldn't write their names on the slip so as not to cause any type of embarrassment.

Examples:  I really can't get over my ex-girlfriend/ I find it really hard to concentrate at my home office/ I always leave everything ultin the last minute/ I want a divorce but I don't know how to tackle this problem with my husband.

3. Students fold the slips of paper and put them in a box or bag. One student in the group will act as a counsellor, so s/he will get a "problem" in the box or bag and give a piece of advice. Then, the others in the group will react and give some counselling as well. Note: We must tell students everyone should react and give advice , even if one's own problem is picked out. This way we guarantee the anonymity of the activity is assured.

4. If two groups are involved, once the discussion over one problem is over, both counsellors, one from each group , swap places and summarizes the problem in the "new group". Then, follow up bringing both problem in the whole class.

## Warmer/ Lead in. Professions. All levels. 20 min.

If your aim is to revise or introduce "jobs" to your students this activity suits perfectly as a warmer.

Procedure.

1 - Write the word "jobs" on the board and elicit examples from your students.

2 - Give them some feedback and teach other kinds of jobs that will appear on the video. ( you can prepare a matching exercise as a "before watching" activity as well, to pre-teach vocab).

3 - Arrange your class into trios or fours, and ask each group to choose a leader. This boy or girl is going to be the only person who will write during the activity.

4 - Tell your students they will watch the music video and whisper all jobs they see in the leader's ear, so that s/he can jot down the words in a sheet of paper.

5 - The winner group is the one with a longer list of jobs, spelled correctly.

These are the jobs shown in the video: ( in order of apperance)

Painter, firefighter, doctor/obstetrician, chef/cook, Ms. America/Universe, Swimmer/athlete, nurse, cowgirl, waitress/server, police officer, photographer, footballer/ football player, soldier/military, flight attendant, cheerleader, newscaster/journalist, teacher, graduate student, seamstress/stylist, ballerina/dancer, high school/university student, welder, scientist/chemist, politician/president, veterinarian & astronaut.

## Noughts and crosses

Procedures:

1 - Draw on the board a noughts and crosses grid with nine categories.

2 - Divide the class into two equal teams. Team A plays with a "0" and Team B with an X.

3 - Team A chooses a square (e.g. Can...) and makes a sentence using the word, e.g. Can you speak French? If the sentence is correct, rub out Can... and write 0 in that square. If it's wrong, Team B has only one chance to correct it. If this is right, they win the square and you write an X in it. Then it's Team B's turn.

4 - The first team to get a straight line of three Xs or 0s in any direction wins the game.

Suggestions for language practice: Write those points in the squares.

a. Does...? Were...? Are...? Is...? Has...? Was...? Did...? Would...? Could...?

b. Wh-? questions ( how often...? why...? where...? how many...? etc.)

c. past tense of irregular verbs ( students have to change form and make sentences in the past ).
