-called the coathanger
-opened March 19th 1932 (teapot sold during 1930s yay)
-opening celebrations included parade of floats, marching groups and bands, pageant, gun salute, procession of passenger ships under the bridge, a venetian carnival, fly past, fireworks, sports carnibals and exhibitions
-public walked across the deck and some celebrated by unofficially climbing the arch
