This is the oldest known self-portrait of a medieval illuminator. It appears on the last page of a hefty manuscript produced at the end of the 11th century (Bodleian Library, MS. Bodl. 717). At the time most manuscripts were made in monasteries and our illuminator was a monk. He portrayed himself dipping his quill into an ink-horn and writing with a brush. The inscription surrounding his head identifies him as ‘Hugh the painter’ (Hugo pictor). Above the drawing, another inscription in red letters reads: ‘The image of the painter and illuminator of this work’ (Imago pictoris et illuminatoris huius operis). By drawing his self-portrait, Hugo wanted to highlight his contribution to the production of this big manuscript, which certainly required weeks and weeks of work.
