What Is the "American Dream"?

What Is the "American Dream"? | English class b3 | Scoop.it

This article talks about the American Dream.  It says, "it essentially is an idea that suggests that anyone in the US can succeed through hard work and has the potential to lead a happy, successful life."  This article also says the American dream goes back to the 1600's when the European immigrants came to America.  This article provides a good explanation of what the American Dream is but to in my opinion the American Dream can be different for everyone, it depends on your views and beliefs and can vary with each individual.  To me the American Dream is getting married and having a family of your own and enjoying your freedom in the U.S.  Other people may have different ideas on what the American Dream is.  Although I believe that everyone’s dream involves the freedom we have in the U.S. I believe the want to fulfill the American Dream has shaped America into the hardworking nation it is now. The article also says that most people view the American Dream as being perfectly average, but I don’t see it this way. I don’t want to be perfectly average and I think the fathers of our nations surely didn’t want to be perfectly average their dream was to be extraordinary.

Response: I agree with Calvin. I also believe that the American Dream started in the 1600s when we first came to America to be free people and escape the rule from the British. The American Dream has changed over the years as time, technology, and culture have all changed as well. But throughout everything, the main gist of the American Dream  is that any individual who is willing to work for a good life, can have anything they desire. My personal American Dream is that I grow up and get a successful career, eventually get married and then have kids. My dream might be different than Calvin's dream, and his might be different than somebody elses dream. But thats the beauty of it being the American Dream. Everybody is going to have different ideas of success, but as long as you're willing to work towards what makes you happy in your life, then you can do what ever you would like. I also feel like that in some peoples eyes, if you have a decent job, and a decently sized house, and a decently sized family, then you are an average person. But if you worked for that house, that job, and that family, then who is to tell you that you aren't the most successful person in the world? Because you earned all of those things and you are leading a great life.

Song to represent a character

I chose the song "Irreplaceable" by Beyonce to represent Daisy from the Great Gatsby. This song is about a woman that wants to leaver her husband or boyfriend because he keeps treating her wrong. She is telling him to leave and that she doesn't need him to lead a happy and successful life. She tells him that she can find another man to replace him but he will never find a woman that is as good to him as she is. I think this relates to Daisy because of how poorly Tom treats her. Towards the end of the story, she finally tells Tom that she loves Gatsby. Daisy also finds out that Tom has had an affair with Myrtle. Now even though Daisy doesn't end up leaving Tom I think this song still strongly relates to her. I believe that if the story would have gone longer without Gatsby dying, then Daisy would have ended up leaving Tom and running off with Gatsby. I also think that towards the end of the book, Daisy starts to realize her self worth and makes sure she is treated better by Tom. At the beginning of this story that was not the case when she said "the best thing my daughter can be is a fool." That showed how Daisy does not expect to be treated well and the best she can do is hope that it doesn't bother her.

Jazz Culture

Jazz Culture | English class b3 | Scoop.it

Jazz culture has always been about freedom and individual expresson. Jazz was unlike any kind of music at that time and was mainly for young people. It was something that would be played at the parties of Gatsby. This all was at the time during economic prosperity and prohibition in America and jazz became the soundtrack to all of the parties and clubs. Jazz has roots in African-American culture which caused it to represent low culture for a while. Racist groups like the Ku Klux Klan tried to stop the spread of jazz and tried to stop its existance. Their efforts were unsuccessful however and the spread of jazz kept on more and more rapidly. Following World War 1, African-American culture started becoming a hot commodity around the United States. Women started ignoring conservative clothing because of jazz music. Jazz first started allowing women to work as performers and other jobs in the music industry. Jazz is still very popular today with artists like Wynton Marsalis and Cassandra Wilson. Some artists from the 1900s are Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Jazz is responsible for influencing artists and innovators for other music genres like rap, r&b, pop, and soul music.

Recent Event about a character

Recent Event about a character | English class b3 | Scoop.it

This article is almost exactly like Tom Buchannon. The story is about a man who is very rich and powerful and it is linked to him cheating on his wife. A man named David Petraeus was the director of the CIA until he resigned because he was caught cheating on his wife. Another situation is like when former Gov. Eliot Spitzer was caught patronizing prostitutes. This was even after he made it his mission to cut down on prostitution. This situation is exactly like the one Tom went through. Tom played football at Yale and was a very successful businessman in the oil business. This success and amount of money is very attractive to women. Tom cheated on Daisy with Myrtle. He did not only do this one time, but because he was so upset with his relationship with Daisy, he would meet Myrtle many times and have many intimate relations with her. I agree with this article that richer and more successful people are more likely to cheat on their spouses. I think this because these people are very ambitious and always want more, which means they want more men/women. That is why I believe that Tom is the same type of person that these successful men are like.

The American Dream

The American Dream | English class b3 | Scoop.it

What is the American Dream? I believe it means that each and every day, we as American citizens can rise each morning and have the same chance at life. When I say a chance, I mean that each and every one of us has freedom to make decisions for ourselves and live out our own dream. My American dream is probably different than my neighbors because we both have aspirations to do different things with our lives. When I think of the American Dream I think of good things such as a feeling of security in my home. I think of a country where race is put behind the quality of the person; a country where problems are solved by our law enforcement officials, a country where everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Another huge part of the American Dream is being able to have a voice in government. That right there is a huge part of what separates us from other countries. in other countries a lot of the time people have no say in government which causes a lot of problems. Over all, the American Dream is one in which everyone is born equal with the same opportunity to succeed in life.

Song that represents American Dream

The song Good Life by Kanye West featuring T-Pain really represents the American Dream. The song starts by saing "I go for mine, I got to shine" which shows that the main character in the song wants to be successful. I think the American Dream is that no matter who you are or where you came from, you can be successful. The song continues to talk about the good times that the main character has while he is with his friends. He says "the best things in life are free" because he grew up with not a lot of money so he realized that he didn't need nice things to enjoy his life. However once he got his nice things and all the money from becoming famous, he learned to enjoy and appreciate them so much more because he knows what its like not to have them. Towards the middle and the end of the song he talks about how having money isn't the most important thing in life even though he always has thought about what it would be like to be rich and fantasized about flashing money around. This song by Kanye West really describes what the American Dream is like in my perspective.
