Genomatica

Genomatica | Engineering | Scoop.it
Genomatica is a leader in sustainable chemicals: ‘greener’ intermediate and basic chemicals made from renewable feedstocks, rather than oil and gas. High-volume core products with better economics and smaller environmental footprint.
Jordan Douglass's insight:

Genomatic uses renewable feedstocks and combines them with Genomatic organisms to turn them into useful chemicals. And with those chemicals they make things we use everyday like shirts, shoes, plastic, cars, paint, and more. This whole scientific process is something that intrests me. Thats where internships come in to see what I really want to and decide to do for the rest of my life, or at least untill I retire.

Internship - Intern Student Engineer jobs in Washington at Boeing

Intern Student Engineer jobs in Everett currently available at Boeing. Additional Everett Internship jobs also available at Boeing.
Jordan Douglass's insight:

I couldn't gt the whole Boeig intership thing out of my head, so what did i do? I did more research and went farther into depth aout what internship i would personally be involved with if i applied for one. I found one called the Intern Student Engineer and couldn't be more happy because i thought it would be perfect for me. Then I read the description on it and was a little dissapointed because I figured out it wasn't so much Chemical Engineering as much as types such as electrical. but none the less i was still estatic and would till be a great oppertunity for me to take after high school.

Chemical Engineering Internships

From EngineerJobs.com, the world's most-visited engineering job site, find every chemical engineering job available anywhere on the web without having to register.
Jordan Douglass's insight:

Everyone has a plan A, but what happens if that fails? I never really thought about that question untill recently and I came p with the idea of an internship and the more i think and talk about the mor i like the idea. Jobs, for the most part, you do untill you retire and i want to be doing a job I like and what better way to test out my potential job than to do an internship so i did research about that and was surprised at all the oppertunities that are actually offered. I found pages and pages of diffeent internship oppertunites and to make it even better i love to travel and a lot of the places offering are out of state and I know i would love the experience as a whole. Now the only really question is to decide if I want an internship being my plan B or make that my first decision to pursue my life long career.

The Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering

The Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering | Engineering | Scoop.it
Jordan Douglass's insight:

Since I did get accepted to WSU i decided to do some research on their Chemical Engineering program and was very impressed from what I saw. Although I didnt get as much information on the Chemical Engineering as I wanted it talked about their engineering in general and what they are doing in a sense and how they ae doing it which only seemed it intrigue me that much more. I saw a lot of information on the teachers who seemed all very good and very professional which i liked because i would love to stay in Washington when i do it and othis way i would still be in a great Chemical Engineerig program.

Jordan Douglass's insight:

First thing was first i just wanted to look at the top schools in the US for CHemical Engineering. There really wasnt anything to surprising or anything whe i wa looking at the list besides that 4 out of the top 10 schools were infact in the same state, and that was California. California also being the closest state to Washington out  of the top 10 had me wondering why their schools were some of the best in the US for Chemical Engineering. But I thought about it for a minute and decided that i really wanted to stay local when I went for my bachelor's in Chemical Engineering.

Civil Engineers

Civil Engineers | Engineering | Scoop.it
Jordan Douglass's insight:

When looking at salary and income for engineering i specifically wanted to look at Civil and Mechanical engineering because those are the two types that i was really drawn to. So i started with Civil Engineering and found a lot of information on it. For one it is a really high paying job in fact. Also this article showed some the places where the mean income was the most or the location qoutient of Civil Engineers according to states where Washington was actually number one followed by Hawaii and Alaska. These numbers and statistics really gave into my decision of persuing a path in Civil Engineering because when that time comes i will have the money to pay for and affort a family and house and all that.

Course Requirements - Chemical and Biological Engineering | Engineering | Scoop.it
Jordan Douglass's insight:

when looking up the classes and different things i had to do to become a chemical engineer i became kind of worried and frustrated because I didnt know what most of the classes were and it got really confusing compared to civil engineering where you could basically tell what you were getting into. Chemical Engineering had classes like thermodynamics, Separations in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Design, Synthesis, and Optimization of Chemical Processes, and many more. On the other hand i really looked forward to enroling in these classes because i saw a lot of biology and chemistry which really entices me.

What is a Chemical Engineer

What is a Chemical Engineer | Engineering | Scoop.it
Jordan Douglass's insight:

20 minutes ago if anyone would have asked me how important engineers i would have told you they are important but not life changing. But my whole perspective has changed or researching what civil engineers do but also what chemical engineers do. Chemical engineers are the people who combine chemistry and engineering to help solve problems. WHich i knew and wasnt too crazy too me, but its the problems that they do solve the left me speechless. These people help solve problems like world hunger, polution, creating new materials, and meeting energy demands. If you're like me your first question was how do they solve world hunger. Chemical Engineers are the ones who develope chemicals and other things to make food cheaper to hep world hunger. I was leaning towards civil engineer because they are so life hanging but now im not so sure because chemical engineers make just as much of an imact.

Detailed career information for Chemical Engineers including salary, job outlook, employment opportunities and career training programs.
Jordan Douglass's insight:

Afer high school you obviously want to go to a good college and for I wanna get out of the house as well. I was looking at the top 10 colleges for Engineering Chemistry and was automatically drawn towards it because they are all far away and most of the are on the east coast.  One thing in peticular that draws me to this type of engineering over the other one (civil engineering) is the flexibility with this job. Chemical engineers are USUALLY requried a bachelor's but emloyers are very flexible with it and are known to hire college graduates with a mathmatics degree or nature science degree.

Civil Engineering Careers

Jordan Douglass's insight:

Look outside. Everywhere and anywhere you look you will see work from civil engineers. Space needle, Everett Event Center, Century Link Feild. These were all made by or with the help of civil engineers. Being able to work on those tpes of buildings really pulls me in to becoming a civil engineer. Being a civil ngineer requires a lot of math and science. Math for me is no big deal and something that comes ver easy to me . Now science on the other hand is almost the opposite and comes as a challenge but for some reason I stilll enjoy it very much. Running all sorts of experiments to me is very enjoyable and I think that if i were to become a civil engineer i wouldn't regret it. plus they have different places to specialize in as a civil engineer such as Cotal civil engineer, materials civil engineer, and structural civil engineer. for the reasearch i have done i know i coudn't go wrong with becoming a civil engineer.

Jordan Douglass's insight:

Going back to plan A and B i knew my first plan and my goal was to work for Boeing. But from all the competition there and I didn't get hired what would I do? I needed to know of other places i could work, so i started for the top and just scrathed the surface of places i could look at. California continues to surprise me because most of the places i saw were in California but they were small buinesses. I wasn't too woried because i just want to work for a company and a job the I will enjoy. These different places included companies called Dupont, Wyatt, Genomatica, and Mayo, Clinic . After looking at all of them i liked Genomatica the most because it delt with genetically engineered microorganisms and doing all sorts of things with them.

Looking for Internship jobs? Boeing currently has several Internship openings available today.
Jordan Douglass's insight:

I did a lo of research on Boeing as a whole because i have always known i would like to be in a big organization like that. Having talked to multiple engineers they all say it is pretty hard to get hired there. Conveniently i also just did a bunch a research on internships so I looked up if Boeing is affering any. To say the least i was not disappointed infact I as overwhelmed. There are so many oppertunities  for me for Boeing sites al over the world including China and who wouldn't enjoy going to China to learn about what you're getting into and see other workers perspective on it.

Everyone has different reasons for going to different colleges, some because that's where their parents went and others because thats where their friends are going. Whatever the reason im just like everyone else and have my reasons for wanting to go to different colleges. WSU was a good choice for me because it was close and i heard it had a ood Engineerng program. But when researching the best colleges in the US one college kept popping up where ever i looked and that was the University of California- Berkley. This really enticed me so I looked farther int oit and was very very impressed. This school is on a beautiful campus and in California which is a big plus, not to mention the price is pretty affordable and being so known for their Engineering programs had deffinatly made e look into this college as a definat posibility to attend.

Schools Offering Degree Programs In Chemical Engineering

Jordan Douglass's insight:

I looked and I looked and I just couldn't find  a list of the best schools for Chemical Engineering in Washington state but what I did find was what schools offer degree programs for Chemical Engineering in Washington State. The only two i seemed to find were Washington State University and the University of Washington. This worked out pretty well because I actually applied to WSU and was accepted so I always have the choice of going there and doing that program.

Chemical Engineers

Chemical Engineers | Engineering | Scoop.it
Jordan Douglass's insight:

I was really happy with the information i learned about Civil Engineering but when I looked at all the enformation for Chemical Engineering I was outstounded because not they make a lot more and there if close to the same schooling for both types of engineering. Plus looking at the maps and comparing them i was surprised how few Chemical Engineers there are. vertually none of the map was covered with it would talk about things like salary meaning either they dont have the information for it or that there are so few Chemical Engineers in the area that they couldn't produce acurate statistics. After looking and researching ll this information about the types or engineering, what they do, and income i think that the ones most suited for me and the ones that i would enjoy the most would definatly be the Chemical Engineering.

No matter what anyone really says money is a big part in everyones lives. It pretty uch runs everyones lives so of course when looking for a job you want not only something you will enjoy but something that will pay very well. Engineering was kind of an obvious for me because I love math and science and it is a good paying job.Engineering is on the rise, from 2010-2020 there is an estimated 19% job increase which means that income will also increase, and thats exactly what this article is about. in a 12 thousand peson survey they found a 4% increase in salary in one year and it is expected to go up even more. Being able to do what i'll have fun with for the rest of my life and will pay well is good to know so you dont change can set out a plan to accomplish that goal and that is my next step.

What Training or Education Is Needed to Be a Civil Engineer? | Engineering | Scoop.it
Civil engineers design and supervise construction of buildings and infrastructure ranging from skyscrapers and schools to roads and water mains. A civil engineer needs strong analytical skills, ...
Jordan Douglass's insight:

There is a long process  to go through to bcome a civil engineer because of the responsibility of their hands. They start with a simple bachelor's degree in civil engineering which is easy enough. But over the next couple of years the have to go through multiple tests and it will take them at least four years to able to work as a project manager or supervisor. Some of the classes that are taken in the civil engineering bchelor's include multiple years of calculous, applied engineering analysis,  Engineering  Physics I and Laboratory, and many many more.

What do civil engineers do? - Institution of Civil Engineers

What do civil engineers do? - Institution of Civil Engineers | Engineering | Scoop.it
Jordan Douglass's insight:

I first researched the type of engineering jobs that appealed to me and I was interested and got a gist of those types in a general. Now I wanted to really know what they did instead of knowing that they just built things. Learning about them has really opened my eyes because we wouldnt be far without civil engineers. They in a sense created you schedual. What I mean by that is they made it so you can shower and brush your teeth in the morning, But why do you brush you teeth in the morning? The answer is usually because you wanna look and smell good for work or school. But how are you ganna get there? Roads. You woulsnt make it too far if civil engineers woudnt have created roads in the first place. To me having that impact on the human population and being ale to say "I was a part of that" sounds like a pretty cool thing. These people have a greater impact than they  might know or a greater impact than people give then credit for and I woud love to be a part of that.

Chemical Engineers : Occupational Outlook Handbook : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Chemical Engineers : Occupational Outlook Handbook : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics | Engineering | Scoop.it
Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry, biology, physics, and math to solve problems that involve the production or use of chemicals, fuel, drugs, food, and many other products. They design processes and equipment for large-scale safe and sustainable manufacturing, plan and test methods of manufacturing products and treating byproducts, and supervise production.
Jordan Douglass's insight:

Chemical Engineering also appealed to me because of the science involved. A lot of testing is involved in the job of a chemical engineer such as conducting research to develope new and improved ways to do things, doing tests and monitor performance of processes throughout production, and designing and planning the layout of equipment. The article also talks a lot about how a lot of their work is done in labs which i know i would enjoy because I could be the first one the describe the labs I did last ear in Physics becuase I always  looked forward to lab days. Also being a kid i dont enjoy school like most and for this type of engineering only needs 4 years which is always a bonus.

Use the drop-down filter to view the different types of engineering in each category.
Jordan Douglass's insight:

Everyone thinks they know what they want to do  but in reality have no idea. Such as me knowing i wanted to be an engineer but also no idea what type i wanted to be. So I researched what types would appeal to me and the couple i came up with was one being a civil engineer because they focus a lot  on the building aspect of things such as building bridges buildings, bridges, and hghways.Another ones that interested me was Chemical because i like the idea of doing experiments and implimenting a lot of science into engineering. and the last one that caught my eye was Engineering chemistry, again they impliment a lot of science and also it said they use their knowledge to fix engineering problems.
