The value of the internet now and in the future

The value of the internet now and in the future | Engagement et modèle économique | Scoop.it
This week's Free exchange column discusses attempts to measure the consumer surplus generated by the internet (summary here). We are inviting experts... Hal Varian - Economist, Google " Said another way, we wouldn't bother to even to go to the library unless we were willing to spend at least 22 minutes (on average) to find the answer. Now that it takes us only a few seconds or minutes to get an answer, we ask a lot of frivolous questions (along with the important ones, of course.) Taking this effect into account involves estimating a "demand curve for questions" as a function of the "cost of getting answers". I don't know any serious research on this topic, so I made a rough approximation to that demand curve and came up with the $1.37 a day figure. It could be larger or it could be smaller, but I think that is the right order of magnitude."

Mutations fiscales: la collecte des données numériques doit-elle être taxée? | Engagement et modèle économique | Scoop.it

How YouTube's updated platform has successfully embraced emerging consumer behavior | Lean Back 2.0

How YouTube's updated platform has successfully embraced emerging consumer behavior | Lean Back 2.0 | Engagement et modèle économique | Scoop.it
The evolution of traditional viewing and how we now engage with video content is the clearest indication of why Google radically updated YouTube, changing not just layout and content discovery, but brand hubs and subscriptions.
Josée Plamondon's insight:

"Consumers want the shows they enjoy, but we want them on our terms. This isn’t new, it isn’t niche, it’s just not yet dominant. While Netflix and Hulu have long embraced this behavior, one of its original instigators, YouTube, had until recently risked being left behind."

" with the average US user now spending an astonishing 500 minutes a month on YouTube, brands which fail to embrace and cultivate their YouTube audience are missing out on cultivating a rich and rewarding relationship."

"The key with these models is highly controlled growth. Startups like Lyft and Sidecar are limited by the number of quality drivers they can hire. Exec is only expanding to cities out of SF now that the company feels confident that it can maintain the user experience while scaling the supply-side remotely. These companies grow carefully, city by city and country by country."

"Small businesses know that marketing is important to get the word out, but those efforts dig into an already limited supply of time and money. Small-business owners (SBOs) are a diverse bunch that includes more women, immigrants and young people than one finds atop big corporations. Josée Plamondon's insight:
The boundaries of Boston encompass some 50 square miles which, despite a solid public transit system, can be difficult terrain to traverse for some people. That's why Mayor Thomas Menino told Government Technology that the City Hall To Go project is all about convenience for Boston's citizens: “We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to get personal, timely service from their city, and the truck helps us to do just that for a whole new set of constituents.” Residents can track the truck's whereabouts via Twitter

Three-quarters of respondents did not have enough time to devote to the process, an understandable situation given that more than half of marketers said they were manually hunting for appropriate content on third-party sites. And an almost equal number of respondents, 73%, said their biggest challenge was creating original content to be shared."

Why companies are fueling the rise of green gaming | Engagement et modèle économique | Scoop.it
"The business community has embraced gamification as a way to change the public's attitude and behavior. But whether you’re working out or conserving water, actions become rewarding when they are measurable, engaging and shared. Social comparison — the relative performance compared to peers — is a powerful motivator for achievement. Not only are people driven to gain status and recognition by social sharing, but there is also positive peer pressure to avoid being a laggard.
