Literature Circles: A Student-Centered Approach to Literacy - ASCD Edge

Literature Circles: A Student-Centered Approach to Literacy - ASCD Edge | Engage Your Audience - Activities | Scoop.it

"When we use literature circles, small groups of student gather for an in-depth discussion of a literary work. To ensure that students have a clear sense of direction and remain focused, each group member is given a specific task. For example, one student may be the designated artist; s/he is responsible for using some form of art to explore a main idea, a theme, or significant scene from the text. Another group member, the wordsmith, might be responsible for documenting important, unusual, or difficult words from the reading. Regardless of each student’s role, each group must collaborate as they read, discuss and critically engage with texts."

Teaching students how to ask good questions is important. Great quotes about questions may help them learn. This page provides quotes about questioning, quotes from a diverse group, including George Carlin, Frank Llyod Wright, Anne Frank, Oprah Winfrey, Albert Einstein and many more.

The images may be saved and you could print them out and use them as small posters in your classroom. Challenge your students to come up with a quote about questioning, curiousity and inquiry and consider making an infographic to share.

Mocomi Offers Hundreds of Short Video Lessons for Kids

Mocomi Offers Hundreds of Short Video Lessons for Kids | Engage Your Audience - Activities | Scoop.it

"Mocomi is a nice website featuring educational and entertaining content for elementary and middle school students."

Via Beth Dichter

Beth Dichter's curator insight, July 5, 2014 11:08 PM

Mocomi is a website geared to elementary and middle school students. Along with videos they have a wide variety of activities in areas including the arts, civics, culture, English, environment, geography, history, science, and math. They also have an online magazine with a specific theme. The current one is called Under Water, and you can access 19 additional magazines online.

This might be a site you use with students, or one that they might explore during free time. Richard Byrne suggests that the videos "are a model of animated informational videos" and students in middle school and high school "could follow the model to create their own short videos to demonstrate their understanding of a topic."
