You've got to spend money, to make money!

You've got to spend money, to make money! | ENG4C Work Portfolio Ryan | Scoop.it

On Tuesday May 15th, 2012 Heather Siegner and Troy Parkes came in to Satin Benedict’s school to talk about their lives as Financial Advisers. They talked about their journey to becoming financial advisers, wages, and about their jobs.

Heather and Troy both went to Conestoga Collage for Financial Planning. While they were in school, Heather worked for a Financial Planner and Troy worked in a bank. They said these jobs really helped they get them to where they are today because both of those jobs are closely related to financial planning.

If you know what you’re doing, Financial Advisors can make 113,000 a year. Who wouldn’t want to make that?

Troy and Heather are in chargeof people’s investments, retirement plans, etc. They basically manage people’s money.

Johns got the power!

Johns got the power! | ENG4C Work Portfolio Ryan | Scoop.it

On Monday May 14th John Ives from the Power workers Union came into Saint Benedict Secondary School to talk about his role as a Union Representative.

John used to be an electrician at the Bruce Power Plant in Ontario, Canada. After realizing that it was a very dangerous job he decided he needed a change. Now he is a Union Representative and is one of the people that review resumes, and does the interview process.

Most people think that getting into a trade is an easy route to easy money, well you thought wrong. John talked about the immense amount of people who apply for the trades and how important it is to build up your resume as much as possible because “There is always someone else out there that has a better looking resume than you do”.

This was interesting for me because I am interested in getting into the trades and it taught me that I need to start taking courses and getting myself into thing where I can get experience in the trades early if I want a better chance of making it.

The Pursuit of Happiness

The Pursuit of Happiness | ENG4C Work Portfolio Ryan | Scoop.it

The movie “The Pursuit of Happiness” is a movie about a less fortunate man names Chris Gardner trying to provide for his family, by trying to sell bone density scanners. When his business goes downhill his wife leaves him and he is left with his son. Chris decides that he needs to get a better job to support himself and his son. He applies for an internship at a stock brokers building. Part of his internship was to try to land customers for the business. After having no luck selling to the smaller names, he jumps right to the top of the list and goes for the head honcho of some other company trying to get his business. He ends up getting his business and gets the job at the stock brokers.

I really enjoyed this movie because it shows that you can achieve anything, as long as you give it your all.

Even Firefighters still visit the classroom

Even Firefighters still visit the classroom | ENG4C Work Portfolio Ryan | Scoop.it

On Tuesday May 1st, 2012, we had Firefighter guest speakers in our class to talk about their jobs. They talked about the extreme hours they work, the dangers and sacrifices they have to make every day to be a firefighter.

Becoming a firefighter isn’t the easiest job to get, one of the guest speakers that came in took eight years to become a firefighter full time. The intense training and the exhausting work it takes to get hired on full time. There are physical tests, aptitude tests and lots of qualifications that you get the job. They talked about the things that you can do to “beef up” your resume to give you a better shot at the job. One of the speakers got hired on at the age of 22 while the other one was over 30 before he got hired.

These firefighters take huge risks every time they go into work, whether it’s their life or their families. The long hours they work don’t only affect them but it also affects their families at home. They work 10 hour days and 14 hour nights or they could also work 24 hour shifts seven days a month. You may think that it’s easy because they get to sleep while they work but in their words, “We can never get a full rest wile on the job”. The complications with getting a full rest wile on the job can be anything from stress, to having to go out on a call in the middle of the night.

Metalworks Music Production

Metalworks Music Production | ENG4C Work Portfolio Ryan | Scoop.it

On Tuesday May 24th, Alex Andronache from Metalworks Institute came in to Saint Benecict Secondary school to speak to a couple classes about his work. Alex talked about some of the history of Metalworks, some of the schooling they offer there, and how he got into the business.

Alex used to be a tour manager for a rock band back in the 80’s. The band decided that they wanted their own private studio so they opened one, and called it Metalworks. After realizing that they needed to make some money out of it they opened it as a recording studio for bands who needed to record. The studio started to make a name for itself, and was very successful. They later opened it as a place where aspiring producers would go and learn the business, and now it’s a post secondary school where they teach music production, and other courses related to the music industry.

Police Officer

Police Officer | ENG4C Work Portfolio Ryan | Scoop.it

Waterloo Regional Police Officer Braden Hill came into my ENG4C class on Tuesday May, 22nd 2012 and talked about his life as a police officer. He talked about his daily duties while out on patrol and at the police headquarters. He also talked about all the training and pre requisites to becoming a police officer.

The most interesting things he talked about were some of the things he gets to do while on patrol. It turns out that patrol officers aren’t out to get you, there mostly out to keep the roads safe.

“Were not going to pull you over for going 10 over the speed limit, I understand that, but if you do something stupid right in front of me, I will pull you over”

He also talked about some of the training he needed to do before even being able to apply for the position. There is a mandatory course that you need to take before they will even look at your application. You also need to stay fit, because you never know what’s going to happen out there. The most important thing he talked about was getting yourself involved in the community and making yourself look better than the other person applying. If you can get yourself involved in your school or community, it helps you gain people skills and that is something major they look for when hiring new police officers.

I found Braden’s talk very interesting because it really makes you realize how hard it is to become a police officer. It also shows that all his hard work in getting to where he’s at now, was well worth in the end.

Basketball Loving Insurance Agent Speaks to the Class.

Basketball Loving Insurance Agent Speaks to the Class. | ENG4C Work Portfolio Ryan | Scoop.it

On Tuesday May, 7th 2012 a State Farm Insurance agent names Todd O’Donnell came in to my ENG4C class to talk about his job as an insurance agent. I think that being an insurance agent would be a nice job to have because you make good wages, you make your own hours and in some cases you are your own boss.

Todd has his own office that he has people working for him full time and he has a company car for his office. Todd had many smaller jobs before becoming an insurance agent full time. Having small jobs relating to the job you want to obtain full time can be a big advantage to you.

Todd also talked about the process of hiring employees and what he looks for in a resume. “It’s all about making yourself look better than the other guy”. He is saying that the more you can beef up your resume with other jobs or courses that you have completed, the better it makes you look.
