Nurses embracing social media to spread best practice

Nurses embracing social media to spread best practice | ENFERMERIA | Scoop.it

Critical care nurses in Kent say they are successfully using social media to share best practice and ideas, including when it comes to raising awareness of potentially deadly sepsis.

The nurse-led critical care outreach team, which works across three hospitals at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, says using social media is a great way to get key messages across.

“We like to think we have embraced technology”

Grace McMahan

The 15-strong team supports nurses and doctors to care for seriously ill patients on standard wards, rather than being admitted to the critical care unit.

“We use Facebook and Twitter, both of which enable us to share ideas and videos and help to us get across best practice in the way that we deliver care to our patients,” said critical care consultant nurse Debbie Higgs.

“A smartphone is all you need and most of us have one of those,” she said. “Social media has taken on in an amazing way with our staff. If we can use it to help care for our patients and support our clinical staff, then that’s got be a good thing.”

The team’s innovative use of social media platforms has included uploading video clips featuring advice from nurses and other clinicians at the trust on various topics and, in particular, sepsis.

As part of the trust’s drive to raise awareness of sepsis, staff are also awarded “sepsis star” certificates when they “go above and beyond” in recognising and treating the condition.

These achievements are celebrated and shared on social media with photos of recipients and their awards.

In addition, the team has used social media to advertise study days for staff and promote other education opportunities as well as share topical news, including articles from Nursing Times.

Senior sister, Grace McMahan, said the team had found social media to be a highly effective way of communicating with staff.

“We like to think we have embraced technology,” she said. “Using social media and video clips can often be more effective than just sending an email to a colleague – it’s far more eye-catching and interesting.”

Digital Opinion Influencers/Leaders: A Disruptive Trend in Physician Marketing?

Digital Opinion Influencers/Leaders: A Disruptive Trend in Physician Marketing? | ENFERMERIA | Scoop.it

Pharma firms have long recognized the power of key opinion leaders (KOLs) in driving influence through traditional channels: journals, speaking events and word of mouth. The problem, however, is that healthcare providers (HCPs) and patients are acquiring information about disease and treatment in the online world – and many KOLs are not “digital opinion influencers,” or DOIs. This creates an opportunity – strategic DOI identification, outreach and management – for brand, communications and medical teams that is often overlooked or poorly addressed.

Digital opinion influencers are influential members of a health community turned to for advice, opinions and information. Their influence flows from reach (followers), their resonance (content sharing) and relevance (topics discussed). Their distinguishing characteristic (versus traditional KOLs) is their use of social media to either create or amplify messages. DOIs are both medical professionals and non-professionals.

Based on our analyses for a range of pharma clients, we have found that DOIs and KOLs often exist in largely different universes, with little overlap. Typically, fewer than 20 percent of KOLs will also have a social media presence and just a handful will rank alongside DOIs in terms of online reach. In the patient world, this is to be expected as many DOIs are individuals as opposed to patient advocacy groups that would already be on a pharmaceutical company’s radar.

The Critical Thinking Skills Cheatsheet [Infographic]

The Critical Thinking Skills Cheatsheet [Infographic] | ENFERMERIA | Scoop.it

"Critical thinking skills truly matter in learning. Why? Because they are life skills we use every day of our lives. Everything from our work to our recreational pursuits, and all that’s in between, employs these unique and valuable abilities. Consciously developing them takes thought-provoking discussion and equally thought-provoking questions to get it going. Begin right here with the Critical Thinking Skills Cheatsheet.

It’s a simple infographic offering questions that work to develop critical thinking on any given topic. Whenever your students discover or talk about new information, encourage them to use these questions for sparking debate and the sharing of opinions and insights among each other. Together they can work at building critical thinking skills in a collaborative and supportive atmosphere."
